      Not really unless people tip good in your market. GrubHub ubereats and doordash are all better in my opinion because this job is really a miles based approach. You should be getting $1.5 a mile minimum for all miles doing gig work. In my market postmates tips are about 50 percent probability without tips expect 6 dollars an hour and a poor dollar to mile ratio

      If you put 100 miles a day on your car driving for postmates, then deduct 20,000 miles at the end of the year from the life of your vehicle, and see if it makes sense then. I used to do doodash full time and averages well over 100 miles a day. Transmission went out in my car and i replaced it $1850, then new transmission went out 7 months later (31,000 miles), and I ended up losing my car - because i sacrificed miles for doordash in my case. If you average less than $25/hour it makes no sense to burn up the life of your car.

    On the money it takes to get back home. You have to learn how to read the map on the accept delivery screen that pops for 10 seconds to accept. It won’t tell you the exact location or miles but I have memorized the map and where the arrows it’s pointing out. Then if I am far away from I can accept an order that takes me closer to where I live and not just driving home wasting gas for nothing.

    1. You got good tips. This is Highly dependent on the area you are serving. You pointed this out, I just wanted to reiterate it for people considering this type of gig. I once did an hour and a half in a wealthier part of town and then an hour and a half in the part of town where a lot of college students live. Naturally I had less downtime in the college area. I did almost exactly twice as many orders (almost no downtime and less driving distance from the fast food places close to the college to the housing also close to the college) and after tips and earnings from both, I made almost Exactly the same amount of money. I was bouncing from place to place doing more deliveries per hour than I ever had before, and I made literally the same as when I was just chill driving around listening to music delivering to the rich folks who tipped me as much as the order earnings sometimes instead of $1 or $2 like most of the college students did. As I mentioned, the base pay was higher on the weather parts of town as well because they don’t have fast food at the end of their street when they live in a sub-division, like the university housing has. If you don’t live somewhere that has a ‘rich side’ this is a Major consideration. I think that was the most stressed hour I’ve worked, and I think I would rather work a minimum wage job or like you said, buy stuff at garage sales and sell it on marketplace or really do anything else if the only option was working in that kind of area for 8 hours straight trying to make a living doing gig work like this. I would argue tips is really the #1 consideration for if this type of work is good in your area. If you have to drive longer for each delivery, that isn’t a problem, because they pay you for that, having to pay for gas / drive home after your shift isn’t really a big deal if you know how to accept jobs that work you back towards your home. Only once have I gotten stuck out somewhere and not gotten paid to drive back and have my last delivery be within 10 minutes of my house. Reading the map in that 10 seconds you have to accept a job and deciding not just if the job is worth it for its own sake ($/mile, being at a fast or slow location where you have to order or wait for food etc.), but if it’s worth taking this job based on where it’s going to leave you when it’s over, and if that place is positioning you for a next quick order or a long drive back to town.
    2. You 100% have to factor in your gas and car Maintainance, which you can just average out to $.50/mi I believe is the current IRS’ ‘value’ for a mile of travel for deduction purposes. You also definitely have to factor in the time you are: waiting for an order, driving back home after you are done, and any other down time involved in ‘the job’
    It just doesn’t work if you don’t. You can say you make ~$20/ hour so it’s ‘more than minimum wage’ but do you end up at the end of the day being able to, for instance, buy more groceries or have more money to put towards rent. If you pan handle, and someone gives you a dollar, that only takes ~30 seconds, but you are Not making $120/hour. You Always have to doctor in downtime when you are going gig type side hustles or your calculations are erroneous.
    For better comparison, say you started working a minimum wage job at 9am and worked until 5pm, how much would you make? Similarly, if you worked from 9-5 doing DoorDash, post mates or similar, how much would you have made at the end of the day. I can tell you right now it’s not $160. It might be higher than the minimum wage job, but it’s not a consistent $20 per hour all day, especially including the tank of gas and estimated car expense based on the miles - although you do get to write that stuff off, so that’s something to consider as well. All in all, it’s more complicated than you presented it to be - although you did do a good job of explaining that you were only talking about the time you spent on a job.

    • @ZainMerchant
      @ZainMerchant  3 роки тому +3

      Thanks for the detailed comment. You’re absolutely right, this is stuff that should be factored in. I am quite new to this and didn’t do a great job of tracking my downtime, but I’ll definitely take this into account when making future calculations and videos. Cheers!

      @@ZainMerchant it’s something I probably go too much into detail in my videos to the point where people don’t like to listen to me yammering on about the same thing for 5 minutes; but if you treat it like a real business and actually want to figure out if it’s worth doing, then that is what you have to do - basically make a business plan, calculate your expenses and expected return, etc. Your video was great. I’ve been doing this for like a year and I still watch it because I was curious what people newer to the scene had to say about it. I think your take would be perfect for someone thinking about it, but not yet seriously wanting to dedicate themselves to it as a true side hustle.

      @@ZainMerchant oh, and almost ironically I have been dashing for 1:16 (downtime included) and made $22 (before gas and miles) so for my area your ~$20/hr is actually spot on before taking off the few bucks for gas, which still leaves us with almost triple minimum wage here, and like you said in the video, you can do it on your own schedule and such. I am working lunch-ish time though, so I probably couldn’t keep this for another 7 hours with no downtime and such.

      @@Cfomodz I’ve been doing it off and on now for about 6 months. I’ve been doing it almost every day for the past few weeks. 20/hr is minimum around the Portland area. I got around 28/hr for 5 hours on a rainy Saturday not too long ago. Used about 12 in gas around 60 miles on the car. Rainy days are a lil more productive. I feel you do better if you work it for 4+ hours at a time. Walmart grocery delivery is almost half of the deliveries on the weekends and they usually tip and pay good. You have no idea how much your pay will be...even base pay. My brother took an order a few weeks ago that ended up being an Asian market order. It ended up going into another state, 24 miles away from the market. It did not appear to be that far of a drive on the map. He was so mad...Luckily, the customer tipped, and he got paid $33.40 for the total order, but he had to drive all the way back to his delivery area which also took like 40 minutes to drive back. The single order put like 53 miles on his car.

    Not everyone is into the religious act of eating at 12pm and only 12pm and 6pm and only 6pm. yes its when the most people eat but people all over the states live different lives and different times

      Of course people eat at different times, but if you want to minimize the time you spend waiting for orders I’ve found just before lunch and dinner seem to be the best times.

      @@ZainMerchant Yeah unless you live in a very popular area. i live 40ish miles east of la. the entire southern california is very populated with people. you can get orders pretty much 24/7 if you locate the right areas
