I'm late to the party but really like this knife. The allure of it's idiosyncrasies makes this blade one of my stand out favorites! The materials and build quality are simply fantastic too. Some distant future day, this knife is destined to be "that neat weird knife that grandpa always carried." The Spydie hole is perfect for a controlled one hand pinch-flip (albeit right handed). In that respect, it is VERY functional. I think you did a great review. Folks tend to be lukewarm to this knife or passionately in love with it (as I am). I may also be the only known person who doesn't find the pocket clip hateful! Thanks!
Funny you mention the Tuff, I was actually playing with mine as I watched the video. The early Tuff's had a lot of problems and many reviewers pointed this out. My Tuff, which I bought about 2 years ago, was made among the last couple batches of production, and it has non of the problems; the lock bar is not too hard to push over, the blade is silky smooth, it is very nice to middle finger flick, and the lock will not slip. It just goes to show how good Spyderco is with their constant quality program.
Great vid's I very much appriciate how you detail why knives have certain design elements and factor in things most others overlook such as grips and realistic uses. Thumbs up.
I love this knife so much, that it's my only non-American made modern folder. I did replace the crappy pocket clip, with a deep carry pocket carry clip. Which wasn't a big deal, since I do that to all of my knives. Ironically, like the Benchmade 940 I hated the design at first. Now their two of my Favorites. For the materials used/fit & finish it's well worth the price compared to other higher end production knives.
TheSummerOfGeorge1 It is not stupid for some one to be a Christian. But to cut down other people on there religion is not a real nice thing. But I will sure pray for you.
HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY HEIDI !!! Very good honest review for a well made knife that is "an oddity to some folks". I can totally relate, but for another knife that so many people love & revere. A knife that will always be a classic, even though it was always a "mid shelf" item. But I could never warm up to it.............and I even bought 2 of them brand new, years apart. I'm speaking of the Buck 110. I know they require sheath carry........but try as I did, it spent more time on the shelf.........I prefer a folding knife I can actually drop in my pocket. The handle of the 110 is just too heavy, bulky & wide for my tastes in a single lockback. I don't like that "blocky feeling" in hand, to be a folder. But much like this knife, it doesn't make it "a bad knife".............just not for ME.
Love the design. There was talk of Spyderco possibly doing a lefty run on the forums. Basically just stated if there's enough demand it's possible, which is probably true to all of there knives, but I'll keep dreaming....would dig the blacked out one I think
I put an after market deep carry clip on my southard, it completely changed the knife for the better. The knife is just quality, but I totally get why a lefty wouldn't like the knife, spyderco could have probably thinned the G10 by about half and been fine. I love mine!
I disagree regarding it being a "one method knife". I have absolutely no problem flicking mine open with my thumb (and I'm a lefty doing it with my right hand). Additionally, I did nothing to the knife after purchase to loosen or "smooth" the pivot point. Factory out of the box and again no problem for me with the thumb flick. All that said, I am looking to get rid of my Southard. I'm not a knife collector (although you never know what the future holds). Being a lefty I would like my one and only "nice knife" to be a completely lefty compatible knife. And I'm not talking about the position of the pocket clip. Do you have any suggestions. My only 2 requirements are that it be a flipper and that it be one of the more exotic blade steels. By the way, I love your videos. Very educational and informative
Surprised that you don't like the Southard. Personally, I love it. Out of curiosity, what are your favorite knives in this price range? A list of 5 would be very interesting. Much respect for you and your videos. Thanks.
It is designed as a flipper, not by using the spyderhole. The pocket clip is a known issue but it does not bother me at all. This knife does not take much of the space in your pocket at all, given the fact that it has 3.5 inch blade. This knife is the best spyderco so far. This saves you money then the custom ones.
Good fair comment Rob. I do like the knife, but for work not as a classic and its a bit heavy in weight and price for what it is for me( at this moment). Now if had a bottomless budget I would have one, just for what it is, it would piss me off though that the spydy holes are, shall we say not very functional. Good interesting review Rob, your the Man for good honest reviews. Happy belated Birthday wishes to your good lady from the crusty old Scot. God bless all.
huh. i wondered about the detent ball. my black on black southard has a weaker detent to where you have to preload it if you want to push-button it. it lightswitches fine and opens with the thumbhole like silk. i figured they were all like that and the weaker detent ball was a happy medium so you could open it using the hole, otherwise i would have sent it in
Rob, I noticed you said you got rid of your Domino. You gave it great reviews, so I was surprised to hear that. Can you tell me why? I just ordered one in red weave before I saw this video, and now I am nervous :-)
I reshaped and heat colored my clip. The knife appeals to me, but in practice I just don't use it. I think it is the overall chunkiness of the design and my changing taste in knives. Should probably pass it on to someone who would enjoy it.
Not a fan of the pocket clip. I am right handed and I have always loved the looks so according to the Apostle P it is a great functioning knife. I finally ordered mine yesterday.
it'a funny cause this is a knife I've wanted ever since I first saw it lol :) But i think I'd buy the domino first lol But this is defiantly some I can see in my collection in the future :)
I could never understand why Spyderco never released this with a carbon-fiber scale? That's what everyone wants! And yeah, that clip looks like sh*t! There are several aftermarket blue anodized clips on ebay that look much better. I love the blade, but since it costs more than the Benchmade 300 Ball flipper, no thanks! The new, smaller Spydie Southard coming out looks promising though, except the Spydie-hole is embarrassingly small.
+agger732 Actually, I forgot all about Nutn's review. For me, this knife is like that girl you knew in high school with a great personality, not ugly, fat or smelly, but that you just never clicked with but wished you did. LOL!
Happy birthday Heidi! May the Lord bless and you and keep you and make His face shine upon you and your family :)

I'm right there with you again on this one. The title sums it up.

Enjoyed brother and a happy birthday to your wife. May the blessings of the Lord be upon you all.

i really love owning this flipper, BUT only after replacing the G-10 scale and pocket-clip,to smooth things out! now it handles like a charm/dream.

I still want one, but I agree with your logic. Good review.

Did anyone else notice he said the handle was about 525 inches think lol
+The Alaskan Knife Guy I have big hands ;)
+The Alaskan Knife Guy LOL 2:38
+jakesterofawesum lol
I have one in all black, did not like the pocket clip so I got a after market one. I like mine a lot.
I reshaped and heat colored my clip. The knife appeals to me, but in practice I just don't use it. I think it is the overall chunkiness of the design and my changing taste in knives. Should probably pass it on to someone who would enjoy it.
No steel interface? How will that work, titanium on titanium?
Question: would you own one if it was offered in a left-hand version?
+rhelinux Probably so... Well... Maybe so.
You have a walk in safe for your knifes ? Where do you live lol ,just asking for a friend ;)
Nice!
Interesting blade.
Sweet blade for sure

ive never held a hinderer design, but that knife's look just has a hinderer vibe to me.
was considering one of these, but asymmetrical is gross
I just don't like that blade shape. The lines don't interest me. I wish there was more of a bump above the hole like a Para 2.

That's a beautiful edge... But boy what an ugly knife... Doesn't appeal to me either... But, thank God for so many different flavors of pocket knives!
Sadly Spyerco has become an overpriced USA knife maker.
Its just to boring for me. I would not enjoy owning this knife.
Rob....be honest. You have a sour taste about this blade because the Nutnfancy review? LOL
+agger732 Actually, I forgot all about Nutn's review. For me, this knife is like that girl you knew in high school with a great personality, not ugly, fat or smelly, but that you just never clicked with but wished you did. LOL!
