    As alien as this seems to us, imagine if someone told a fish that we sleep for 7-8 hours every day. A fish wouldn't understand it as they never close their eyes, or lie down for a nap lol

    • @fraist1
      @fraist1 3 роки тому +56

      Yes, but you can reverse that, and imagine a fish telling you that it sleeps without needing to close its eyes and that it doesn't need to lie down in order to sleep. You would believe that because you have enough brainpower to do so. So, a fish wouldn't understand our nocturnal 8 hours of sleep cycle solely because they don't have enough brainpower to do so, and not because they can't relate.

    • @SK22520
      @SK22520 3 роки тому +49

      @@fraist1 I don’t think that was the point. I think the point was that we think it’s strange that animals can sleep for so long and drop to -2,9 degrees C in body temperature for months. But it’s just what you’re used to. A fish is used to not sleeping, a human is used to sleep everyday. A bear can hibernate for months and give birth at the same time. It sounds weird but it’s just what you’re used to and then you’ll find it the most normal business in the world.

    Good presentation. I thought I might make a comment on one of the stages of activity and hibernation in bears called fall transition. Fall transition is a period after hyperphagia (the period of excessive eating and drinking to prepare for hibernation) when metabolic processes change. Bears voluntarily eat less but continue to drink to purge body wastes. They become increasingly lethargic, resting 22 or more hours per day, often near water. Active heart rates fall from 80-100 beats per minute to 50-60 per minute. Sleeping heart rates fall from 66-80 beats per minute to less than 22 per every 60 second time period.

    Much like everything else we create, we first have to look at the things around us.

    I'm writing a zombie apocalypse story, and one of the traits of the zombies is that if they’re left alone with no prey or stimulus, they slip into a hibernating/torpor state until roused by animals or survivors. I'm trying to figure out how plausible that'd be and how long a zombie could stay in the state before just withering away. (They’re living zombies, a bit like 28 days later, so there's no decaying going on or anything)

    I saw a program once where they took a little blood from a squirrel while it was hibernating and then waited until it came out of hibernation. They put that blood back in and within minutes it went back into hibernation. So if they can perfect this for human space travel I imagine it would work in a similar way. Not only would it make those super long trips more feasible by not having to carry nearly as much food, water and oxygen but it would also make the trip mentally much easier to tolerate since most of the trip would be in a non-waking state. (For safety, obviously not all members of the crew would be hibernating at once).

    The one question the video didn't answer: how much does hibernation increase the lifespan versus not-hibernating? Great video BTW. Just one detail.

      Sleep is when your computer saves your computer's current state (ea opened windows and program and things you typed and all) in memory (short term storage) while it goes into an off like state - drawing minimal amount of energy.
      Hibernation, which was developed for laptops is when your computer saves its current state in the hard disk (long term memory) and actually turns off.

    Interbout arousal most likely occurs so that muscle and brain tissue don't lose the ability to function normally. Also, hibernation will never be feasible for space travel as the human body will still age. Aging would be reduced greatly by the ability to hibernate but by traveling a great enough distance you would die before reaching your destination.

    Bears don’t hibernate since a requirement for hibernation is reducing your body temperature to half. They do, however, go into a state called torpor.
