Terrific discussion. The last 20-30 minutes reached a new level. It began to transcend the immediate. Appreciate Guido's insights into Junger. In response to the discussion about what can we do about our current situation......I think we can do nothing and that is what I believe Junger knew and what is the overall message of his books. Eternal recurrence. The last two sections of Nietzsche's Will to Power. The same old comes back again in new shapes and forms (the worker). I believe this is why Junger ultimately chose to become the Anarch...who lived in "the forest" away from it all.

instead of comparing junger to an american like hemingway, i'd say, compare him with william s burroughs.... both gnostics, aristocratic in bearing, against modernity as control and a war with evil.... both also loved chess...

Rather than the post-modernism of the Right, Jünger is one of the few heirs to the Counter-Enlightenment, which is stylistically and formally composed of archipelagos with subterranean connections. Jünger comments on this much as Hamann did, the "in a nutshell" is foreign to us, it forces one to see the hidden. It should also be remembered that he was opposed to the NS, and distanced himself early on (his brother was influential here, and NS raid on his home solidified this opposition).
In many ways Jünger's ideas are more dangerous than NS, and not because of being extreme or repulsive but simply as foreign in time and language. It is pre-Kantian, and as you suggest close to the mythic.
One may also compare Nietzsche's popularity with Bloy's obscurity. Two approaches towards the absolute.
