This is a great video. Two legends together. Ethel Waters was truly the first black American superstar. In her prime everyone knew her and loved her, blacks and whites, and that was rare achievement. Yes, Florence Mills, Josephine Baker, Adelaide Hall, and Valaida Snow were stars, but they did their best work in Europe. Ethel stayed in America and did her best work here. She truly opened doors for black female performers, and sadly most don't even know her today.

WOW ,,, what a rush of memories. My sister and I were in the audience that night.
I was working at the studio (Metromedia West, channel 11, Hollywood) I never missed a Barbara Mcnair taping. What a great copy of that tape. Shot with our brand new Norelco Plumicon cameras. The cameramen loved them. Smaller, lighter and so much easier to use. You cold start them from cold and get them white balanced and ready for air in only 30 minutes. Wow TV from back when the earth was still cooling. (and I was still young)

One of the most interesting comments I've read on YT. Thanks for sharing this bit of trivia .... lucky you, being in the audience. Barbara McNair was beautiful and so talented. I wasn't "of age" when her show was on, but I have a huge appreciation for her talent & beauty.

Awesome info share! I would love to know more, like how was it seeing her in person and other guests on her show? Boy! I wish I was there! So, this was during 1st Season right? And it was originally taped in Hollywood, Ca, then later by 2nd Season was taped in Canada, is that correct?

How wonderful! I feel that Ethel Waters may have ...just a little bit..held back so as not to overpower the lovely Barabara (spelt a little differently?) Mcnair...What a beautiful duet. Both ladies were superb! I think we got Barabara's tv show in Australia as I have sen that sweet face and kind manner before. What an absolute treasure this film clip is! Thank you, Thejazzsingrs Jazz in Holland for uploading what I believer, is a rare and charming moment of two gracious ladies sweetly harmonising and enjoying their faith. Thank you.

1969, first 1st of what was called The Barbara McNair show. First Season was taped in Los Angeles, CA. with David Winters and Burt Rosen who were biz partners. 2nd Season in Canada with same team but her 2nd or 1st husband Jack Rafferty was associated producer, they were divorcing by that point and right after the show finished they were divorced.

Ethel paid Barbara a great compliment and there was not receptivity, but perhaps embarrassment. The song was nice enough for no black audiences at the time, but very toned down.

Very uplifting.....pardon me for a white person for making this comment, but it is apt, I believe: Black people (younger ones) would say Barbara McNair is trying to be "White," in style, demeanor, etc.....I hear that from time to time, and wonder why if someone uses their God-given talent, and has a certain style, what's wrong with that? I can't figure why many in the "black community" would call her a "sell-out," or why they would say she is "trying to be white." I think she's beautiful, and I agree below with "Boo's" comments below, when her people were classy inside and out---pre-Rap, pre-hip-hop, and the destructive Pop Culture, gangstas, etc. has poisoned the culture and the people who are part of that. This was a time when the video was posted, when there were certain standards, a time when people could express their Christian values and Faith IN HOLLYWOOD--we didn't have as coarse a culture---to me, a MUCH better day. Beautiful post, and Ethel expresses how her people BACK IN THE DAY, were good, Christian-focused people, and since roughly LBJ"s "Great Society" which rewarded single mothers with more money for more kids, and fathers fled the homes----I love this era, and love Ethel Waters and Miss Barbara McNair. Trying to be "White?" Why not judge on someone's CHARACTER, not pigment. Isn't that what MLK preached? Thanks so much for this post.

I know I am a little late but I think your comments are very bigoted. Who says she was trying to be "white"? She publicly carried herself with class and poise as many women did during that time. Secondly, I don't know what you've noticed or where you live or when you've explored the culture of Hip-Hop beyond Fox News ,but Hip Hop culture is known for more than you are aware of due to your thriving ignorance. Finally, as a person who' came of age in the 90's and 00's this generation of young people and young adults find freedom in expression and don't feel the need to impress and comply with the world as those did in the past generations. Now let's just enjoy Miss Barbara McNair as the beautiful talent she is and leave the bigotry and backwards thinking in the past.

Reading quite of bit about Barbara McNair I surmised that she struggled with the issues of race....it was said she had a thing for white men...married 4 times...but I don't think she was trying to be white..she just loved white men and took a lot of flack for it...
She was talented and beautiful...and this video with Ms.Waters was so touching and so sweet.

Aside from her husbands, which I've heard her 1st one was actually Black named Earl White she been with since high school and there were ebay photos and articles on her dating Ike Jones who was Black and she knew since 1960-do you know of any of the possible famous white ones she possible got involved with? I've heard the Rat Pack, but I like to know if you have any knowledge of this?

@@lomac7132 I see where his comment could have been taken as somewhat bigoted but, not being in his head, I really don't think he meant it that way. While I can appreciate what you (Lo Mac) say, if you think any Hip Hop artist of today has the class, dignity, & talent of Barbara McNair, you are sadly mistaken. What's FOX News to do with anything? Did anyone mention it? Your bringing it into the conversation lends a tad of bigotry to the conversation as well. Just food for thought. I don't think Miss McNair necessarily wanted to be white, but it's a fact she dated and married white men.

Barbara McNair is absolutely beautiful - she has European / Caucasian features vs those of typical African-Americans. Not that this makes her any more or less beautiful, just pointing out the obvious.
