Hi, I was a shaftsinker between 1978 to 1991 on the UK Selby coalfield, and I enjoyed the job enormously. As someone said, you learn quickly what work really means. Those were the days
This is a awsome video, I remember doing this in Snow Lake Manitoba, I worked for Aurroe Quarrying, the year was 1980, It was a experience in life, I worked with a lot a great men back then, My Fatehr was a Clam opertater for years, it was fun back then.
well im glad you had a good go at it,at this shaft we took two benches a shift, drill twice blast twice muck out twice and it was a lot better when both clams were runing and a bit more organized....but hey were a haywire bunch us canadians are.
A bit more for all of you, yes I absolutely LOVED the job but a stage 4 blood cancer slowed me down until I beat it 2 years later, if I could I would be back underground tomorrow and loving it, this is one job that keeps you young in mind and fit and by the way we used the Crydamin to move the bucket (kibble) and the pumps around, not a bloke.
lol...we live as long as anyone else, the one clam got slamed against the wall and the nipple got sheared off in the cylinder so "grover" was the only one left and it was allways a bit spooky when he was on the clam....lol we all take a turn on the bottom when we muck out (dodging the buckets, the clam and what ever falls off the wall or down the shaft)
I was at Gulf mine Grants, NM 1979 Harrison Western sinking, then Odessa, NM at the Moly mine, Centennial 1st and H.W. took over. I loved doing this job, mine development ! We used the 631 to load buckets so which is worse ? lol You must trust each other man ! When HW took over (after 2nd fatality) they got Cryderman. Then 1982 Wenatchee, WA Was a hardrock production miner before and after.
The guy waggling the overly long control sticks dosent fill me with any confidence that no one was killed whilst stinking this shaft,, the huge grabbing devices with more fail points than a broken biscuit also don't decree any faith the cables are flapping about ready to decapitate a worker and the telescopic movement screams trouble like a weak fishing rod,,,,, nope wouldn't catch me in that hole
Small excavator and a single muck box are faster. We tried Cryderman muckers like these and they sucked. Slow, dangerous, constantly breaking down and slow to jump (lower after each round).
The muck machine is called a ….clam. The two we used were referred to as a Cryderman Clam…they were invented by a Canadian, his last name was Cryderman.
I bet that man or any man is not allowed down in there nowdays, safety wouldnt allow it too many things going on at once and the chances of being squashed are way too high.Watching the bloke operating one of the clams, the controls on it are as loose as can be and you cant have good control of hydraulics when its like that.Do they still do it like that?I thought alot of it nowdays would be done with a raisebore.
A crew back in 1989, in Kirkland Lake Ontario Canada sank a shaft 1 mile deep in one year. I think it was a record for the time. New system now being adopted in some cases is Vertical Shaft Boring
this is SKID calling came across this while downloading porn lol..hows everybody doing how come im not in any of the videos guess I must have been hungover back at the Bunk House. Good video brought back memories!

I knew a lad who helped sink those shafts - Cliff Elliot.
You are a special and very brave breed. I don't care what they may pay me, I'd NEVER go down there in the mine. God luck and stay safe!
This is, in IMHO the hardest video on you-tube aside from any ones that were shot in the war. This is real mans' work for sure.

Shit looks like a place that nightmares are made out of lol
Was osha' just a dream back then lol
I wouldn't want to be the guy hooking and unhooking the bail!
What was the life expectancy of the guy at the bottom of the shaft?.....I would guess, less than 5 days.
Worked in Leaf Rapids for while back in the early 80s
thanks for sharing.
That's what you call mucking a round . Respec to the geezer in the shaft , that takes nerves of steel
@MACoom thats gr8...wish em all my best, good luck in the mining profession!

Thanks for your interesting video

Hard graft , hard men
Actually when both clams are running it goes really fast.

As dangerous as it gets how much is he paid?
This was 1993 and we were paid $20 an hour wage and $28 an hour bonus

who makes the clam loaders? are they elec/hydraulic? are they fixed to the shafts super structure?
they are pneumatic. cryderman once then OJ industries and Hitachi do them now.
aaron keeth. The clames move up and down on what's called a Galloway hoist it moves independent from the main shaft with its own winch set up.
Unreal. Wow.
how long did it take you guys to complete this shaft and which shaft is it?
