/ cottonandcurls for glimpses of my life.
1.Grab an oversized button up top and cut off the arms, the collar and the yoke in the back to flatten the box pleat, and seam rip the pocket off.
2.Lay a top down the center and cut around one half including the sleeve, folding it over and cutting the other side.
3.Sew the front and back shoulder and the sides together. Serge or zig zag stitch to prevent fraying.
4.Try the top on and make any adjustments, mark and cut where you want the neckline to be.
5.Cut on one sleeve into 2 rectangles at least 5 or more inches wide and 10 to 20 inches long once sewn together into a tube, the longer it is the more gathered and full it will look. Mine were about 15 inches long and 5 inches wide.
7.Sew the rectangles into a tube, then sew a basting stitch along one side.
8.gather the basting stitch to fit the sleeve opening. Repeat with the other sleeve.
9.Turn the shirt right side out and pull the sleeve end into the ruffle opening, pinning right sides together
    10.Sew them together.
11.Hem the bell sleeve with a rolled hem by sewing 1/4” twice
    12. sew the neckline under with the same rolled hem as the sleeve. Try to be careful here to not stretch or pull too much because it can look warped or roll forward.
13.Hem the bottom if you need.

I'm making it and I just love it! can't wait to see my result! However, I'd recommend to whoever is trying to iron the shirt first, it makes it way easier if you are not experienced and even if you are, the cuts are more clean and each side matches way better

I'm really obsessed with shirtdresses and the buttons in the back shirt look. Best design trend in a long time! I used to sew stuff like that from scratch....soooo time consuming! I love these workarounds...no more collars and buttonholes. Yeah!

Everything I watch on UA-cam seems so easy to make. Today I wanted to refashion an old shirt into the one from your video. First, when I turned it onto the right side, the sleeves were puckered (before adding the ruffle endings). Then, I realized I had made the top too small. It's do frustrating :( But, I won't give up and keep watching your videos - they are inspiring :)

Anna Lochman I'm so sorry! I have had years and years of things not working out and getting frustrated (still happens weekly!). I feel ya!! To help with the Puckering always cut the extra seam allowance off by the armpit - also always cut bigger than it seems! Always! It's easier to take something in than taking something out. I still make this mistake often. Don't worry you will get better and better with everything you try. :)

PrettyInBinc oh dang! I took me quite a few attempts at my first shirt refashion years ago- back when I had big boobs! And boxier stuff is trickier for Bigger chests for sure. I usually would make the top more of an a line shape versus a box shape so it hugged my chest and was more flattering. Maybe this is something you could try? Or try a flowy fabric?

Is the shirt you traced oversized as well? Because the sleeves on your finished skirt look longer than the cut ones. You don't need any darts in the front?

    • @cottonandcurls
      @cottonandcurls  7 років тому +3

Yes the shirt on top is a bit on the boxier side. I cut out the sleeves to be a little longer than the tee shirt. I don't need darts because the top is a more boxy than fitted. If I had bigger boobies I probably would have added darts ;)

hahaha that is a good paranoia for sure. Some of the time I do sew the back closed when I am worried about it popping open or whatnot.
