Xander you may be teaching us many things in these videos about survival and hunting.. but the real value in your channel is your personality and your childlike curiosity and ability to give subtle insight into seemingly mundane things. Thanks for being you.
Hunting primitive is super hard man. Gives me a tremendous amount of respect for my ancestors. You did everything right and it still went left. Don’t hang your head
A great hunt Xander. Just getting on the deer and taking a shot at them is progress. Lots of lessens learned and to have a friend and mentor like Clay is worth your weight in gold. Nate
Love seeing this Xander! I am not a hunter but the rifle of choice got my attention. My father was a gunsmith and a black power muzzleloader owner. I learned to shoot using black powder rifles and pistols. His old Club - Lock, Stock and Barrel held summer rendezvous up and down the western US states; I spent my childhood as the daughter of a mountain man. Amazing memories. Thanks for sharing your incredible life. Joie de vivre!
stay the course man. Took me 14 years to kill my first deer still hunting. Stay patient and don’t quit. It’s a lot sweeter when you’re successful doing it the way you set out to initially. Keep at it with the flintlock. nice video

@@gorehouzerlangdon A very Thank you sincerely ♥️ Happy Birthday to you too fam. I truly hope you have a wonderful year ahead of you. Have a fantastic day Gore 🎂🥳
Brother it’s why it’s called hunting not killing! I have hunted for 34 years and have had hunts not workout, it’s the sport luckily you cleaned missed, I have wounded a few and never found them and it’s a heavy burden. As outdoorsman we love the hunt we love the animals however we are human and we make mistakes. You learn from it and you continue to pursue the sport and animal you love. Good stuff brother keep on keep’N on!
Even when you make a good shot it's easy to doubt yourself. The elk I shot this year didn't leave any blood trail, not even any blood where it was laying. Despite me hitting it perfect right behind the front shoulder. On a big animal like that the bullet didn't pass through and all the bleeding was internal. I looked for him for like 30 minutes and then it got dark and I figured I missed him. I went back to camp, hating myself for thinking I blew the opportunity that I worked so hard for. I walked out at first light the next day and saw him laying dead right away. I was able to save about 80 pounds of meat but I did lose some due to bone sour. Part of hunting you have to learn by experience. I know in the future I'm going to be much more deliberate and pick an object to mark where the elk was and an object where I think he went. Because when you get out walking in the thick timber everything looks the same and it's hard to tell which pile of downed timber he is laying in.
Been stressing with school and my future and life and I gotta say Xander is my comfort UA-camr, he's my favourite UA-camr and has helped me through a lot, I'm gonna get more out and about because of him. Much love Xander keep it up ❤
Man this was an epic video. When I start watching your videos I can’t stop until it’s done. I love the adventures. Your bud is also great. You can tell by his knowledge of hunting. Awesome. Looking forward to the next one
Buddy, I felt your emotion with the missfire and then the hangfire. I've been so intrigued by flintlocks for a long time and this was great. Incredible storytelling on this one, that suspense was felt so strong. I went black bear hunting twice this last year in Parry Sound area and both times had eyes on one but didn't have a shot, so I can relate to the anxiety you felt. God bless!
I'm so glad that you're keeping up your connection with Clay. He's an amazing resource and you two share the same kind of drive. Beautiful place, awesome trip!
These elks were lucky, but this means you have some more hunting to do in the future. These type of films make my hearth feel so calm and warm, connecting with nature. Had some luck in the high tatras to venture, next time I'll try to hunt. Looking forward for another 3hour long adventure! Good luck.
Xander, I've been watching your channel since you had less than a 100k subs. I love you, man. However, I wish you would do some of your original content and what made people watch you in the first place. Once a week camping outside with no gear, cooking taco pizzas on open fire. There was something beautiful and profoundly fulfilling in the simplicity of those videos. Now, it takes a month for a new upload from you, and it's always some grand new adventure at the end of the Earth. Don't get me wrong, I still watch those videos and enjoy them. But I really wish you would do some of your original content now and then. Anyway, best of luck from Switzerland!
Been there done that. Xander, Clay, outstanding. Hunting primative weapon can be tough and rewarding. Hunting in the sleet and snow, I love it. Xander, I really enjoy how you are pushing your limits. Great trip...
man id love to see you keep tryinh to harvest game finally. That hunt was something you wont forget! good luck on the next one and love the hunting survival videos when I see them.
Fantastic video. Two great guys. I enjoy both creator's content individually, so I couldn't press "watch" fast enough when I saw a collaboration. Clay mentioned the hat in one of his videos, so it was cool to see it on its new home.
Remember, every hunting trip is a victory kill or no kill. It's a learning experience and valuable practice for the next one. I lean that way to fishing as well. Every skunk day leads to a better day.
Fun video. That first miss: first thing I thought was that delay between trigger pull and ignition caused a flinch. That would be the challenge for me never having hunted with a flintlock. Right call on passing on the second doe next day. Many wouldn't. Proud of you for that. I thought for sure you'd take your first big game this time. Took me 4 years when I started but I have rarely been skunked since. It'll come and I hope you can record it when it does. Thanks for the trip to Idaho - man I'd love that. Stay safe.
Loved this, Xander. Thanks again for a great one. I shot my bow/shotgun/crossbow 6 x before I harvested my first deer. You'll get it. Remember, "Go where the deer are. Step where the sticks aren't." - Clay
I really love how you’re not afraid to show yourself learning and growing. This video was great. Sorry you didn’t get one this time, but you will. Using the flint lock- wow!!
It takes a special person to hunt this type of hunt. As a newcomer your patience and curiosity is out of the norm. Keep getting out there and it’ll happen. Keep yer powder dry!
Xander, I love the video, you're amazing. Remember, a good hunt is one you spend time with friends/family, not necessarily one you get a kill! Keep it up bud
You sounded like a bull moose after that first shot 😂...good hunts Xander. It will happen eventually. Things are much more rewarding when you do it the hard way!
This awesome trip is an example of: “Go afield with a good attitude, with respect for the wildlife you hunt and for the forest and fields in which you walk. Immerse yourself in the outdoor experience. It will cleanse your soul and make you a better person.” -- Fred Bear You have found a worthy mentor. He is passing on golden advice. At 60+ years my biggest whitetail is a 10 point taken with my 50 cal Hawken and a patched round ball. Hunting with primitive weapons is about getting close. Within their highest sensory range, that is the challenge. Misses will happen and are opportunities for learning.
Your videos are always so mischievous and entertaining! Thank you for your sense of humor and your ability to make our days brighter and more fun!♂️🐦🦍
Intense video! I loved it, why ? Because it made me fill like l was looking right through the sights on the flint rifle up until you pulled the trigger! Disappointed we missed!😳
Great looking meals on this adventure! Thanks continuing to sharing your hunters journey. I am also a new hunter and have yet to harvest a deer. But getting that much closer each season. Keep it up. 🔥
I used to hunt deer with my father when I was a kid with a 45 cal. Flint lock Kentucky Long rifle. When you get a deer with a firearm like that. It is etched in your soul forever! I sure miss that old man...
It's tough when you get an opportunity and then it doesn't work out. I missed a deer or two this year and am still kicking myself 😂. But that's hunting! At least you got to see deer!
One thing that makes muzzle loader hunting more difficult is that it tends to be early in the season, pre-rut, so you can't rattle them in and scent lures are not real effective. You have to pattern them around a food source, like fruit trees, but it's hard to get any consistency. Damn those mis fires! Cool vid, X!
Great video. Nothing harder to take game than a flintlock...maybe a rock. Bottom line is is you gave it your best SHOT. Your videos are superb none the less. The backstrap awaits you!
hey Xander, you are my absolute favourite youtuber and have inspired me to get back into the outdoors. Been watching since your first winter camping vid in 2020/2021 (?). I used to subscribe to the Pennsylvania Game News, a small hunting journal put out by the state game assc. that contained hunter stories as well as warden stories, regulations etc. Anyway I remember well one hunter telling about how when he was a young squirrel hunter he was sighted up with a squirrel that was just tucked behind a tree, everytime he thought to shoot the thing moved a bit, he didn't want a shot unless it was clear. End of story, the squirrel finally stood up and walked away. He was aiming at a guys head in a fur hat. Be careful out there! One tip commonly used was a tight fitting orange tape tied off around the tree you werre sitting under. As long as it didn't flap the deer or turkey wouldn't notice.
0:43 We have an expression in Germany : Noise camo. It means that you’re basically avoiding any fabric that’s making any noise when you’re moving towards animals. I wouldn’t wear synthetic clothes for it makes a hissing noise that doesn’t help when I’m stalking about
Fine video again, Xander! I've been enjoying your channel since finding it on Christmas break. I like that you just present stuff as it is, with no pretence or sensationalist nonsense. Looking at that missed shot again in slow-mo, it looks to me like the rifle wasn't firm into your shoulder, as there's a lot of recoil and the gun visibly moves quite a lot into your coat. I figure that movement altered the aim before the bullet left the muzzle. A great video to watch, as it gives a real insight into how hard it would have been for anyone to have caught a break to get good food back in the day.
Xander Budnick and Clay Hayes??? This collab is better than anything on Discovery Channel or NatGeo!
