"Sauna in Finland is like a religious thing" Girl, you have NO idea how right you are. Sauna DOES have deep religious and spiritual ties to Finnish tradition as well as culture. Until relatively recently, most people would have been born in a sauna as well as died in a sauna, which makes sense as it's the cleanest place in any household as well as simplest to wash down. Old Finnish paganism doesn't have any churches, so all the holy sites were natural formations such as large boulders, large trees, or a large body of water. If a Finn doesn't have any such spiritual sites nearby, they could always just retreat to a sauna to have their spiritual moment. In a public sauna, once you enter, you enter naked and leave your previous life behind. In practice, this means that the biggest CEO is equal to the dirtiest coal miner and the most famed general is at the same rank as a day 1 private. The only ones who outrank others in a sauna are those who maintain it, so if you break the peace of sauna, they could throw you out. Sauna is still of course highly social place as well, just not a place to conduct business, politics, or any other such matters in. So yes, to a Finn, a sauna is a perfectly suitable substitute for a church, hospital, pub, or just about anything you need it to be. And yes, saunas are inhabited by spirits and elves for protection and health in the old Finnish beliefs.
Most of the elevators in Finland are just like everywhere in the world. Elevator company "Kone Oyj" is from Finland. It's no. 1 or 2 in the world on their own field of expertise lol.
Great video and all the info was correct. One thing though: sidewalks are being plowed before pebbling them, otherwise no one could walk in the snow. Pebbles just prevent falling on slippery surface. Other than that, incredible Finnish skills in 18 months 👍👌👏
Mahtava video :) Awesome video. I’m Finnish but I have also lived in Texas and now living in Caribbean. I have to tell you have really learned the key points of Finland and Finnish people. Lohikeitto is my girlfriend’s favorite Finnish food too. She’s from Guadeloupe so there’s huge cultural difference. And your Finnish language is awesome for only 1.5 years! Kaikkea hyvää sinulle ja olet aina tervetullut suomeen!
Salmiakki is actually ammonium chloride, and it's actually white. It's often mixed with liquorice and colored black with carbon or something, but the chemical itself is white.
Really fun and upbeat video, made me feel happy! Thank you! The elevators though are like that in the center of Helsinki (or inserter any old city here), because of the old buildings :) We have regular modern elevators too (KONE is a Finnish company), Most of the old elevators are being retrofitted where ever it's possible. :) The thing about the sauna is, it a place to be truthful, because you give up all the titles and undress it all (work or other power over others) you might have. The thing there is; we are all sweating in a box equally, speaking man to man, man to woman, woman to man, or woman to woman. No badges, no pretence and absolutely nothing sexual. Just words. Some try to bring their work shit in to the sauna, but they leave without it. I can't speak for everyone, ofcourse, but I don't care about correct grammar or syntax or what ever, I do understand you. It's not about perfection, it's about communication. We understand it 100%, it's not a big deal when you don't get it 100% right. It's amazing to us that anyone could learn our language. The only other language I know how to speak is english (not at all perfecly, i know that, but I've not met a person who cares about that), that said; you don't want to know how my Mandarin sounds like; spoiler: It's REALLY bad. :D
Enjoyed learning more about Finland. One day I'll get there! You did a great job explaining things, and I appreciated your enthusiasm for the country and the people. Well done! 🙂👍
I've met a lot of exchange students, immigrants and other foreigners in Finland. Yet this is the first time I've heard a foreigner complementing finnish food. Sure, a lot of people like karelian pies (karjalanpiirakka) but actual food, like soups? Most describe them as being "just okay" or "bland".
Hi, I work in the elevator business. Most elevators in Finland are the same as anywhere else in the world, whether it's made by KONE, Schindler or Otis. What you're describing is an old elevator found in older flats for example but modernization is possible to those as well if wanted.
Sauna is tradition... but it's washing, bathing. Showers are a new invention. To properly enjoy sauna, it's better to reserve an hour or two for it - so many people settle for once a week. The rest of the week just taking a shower. Sauna washes you more thproughly, because you sweat the dirt away from deep within your skin. And then you wash it away in a shower or by swimming etc. But there actually are people who take sauna almost every day, 5 days a week maybe. Just I think that would dry the skin for most of us :)
I just loved the US mostly because it's so not like Finland... But then again, it's good to visit other countries and see different people, culture, lifestyles, etc, but when you finally get back home in Finland, you just know deep in your heart and your soul that this is the place where you belong and want to spend all your life.
Where on earth did she live that she managed to find those old-style elevators without inner doors? Just about the only time I've ever seen them was when I took a trip to Helsinki. And I find it extremely difficult even there they don't plow the streets and sidewalks.
You can't understate this! We Finns have a habit of doing that. maybe we are worthy after all. despite all the whipping we serve onto us. obviously some honour to be granted. thank you.
Nicely done, Thumbs up! Thank you for sharing your experience. Wow I am impressed, but it is hard to believe though, speaking finnish well enough after only a short stay. How is it possible?
The gravel/rocks are not used for the same purpose again instead they go to land fills on building sites etc. Or that's how it's supposed to be anyway.
Didn't get the elevator thing at all... I used those vintage "cage"-boxes for 20 years and during all that time "had" to rode with some neighbor maybe 30 times at most.
Actually you can't find blueberries from finnish forests, what we have in here (and plenty on those) are bilberries. Oddly more blue than blueberriers (blue also inside when blueberries are whitish).
you do understand that "Kone" makes elevators around the world... and that is finnish elevator company xD you just went in the old elevator You speak suprisingly good finnish :P
I hope you stayed in touch with the old lady in the train. If she gave you her address, she really wanted to stay in touch with you. Riisipiirakka is actually karjalanpiirakka, or karelian pie. It is from east, area that used to be Finland, and is now Russia after the WW2. People fleeing from the war brought pieces food culture that stuck and spread all over the rest of Finland. Good pronancuation of the letter "R"!
I'm just wondering. Lately when I put "Finland" in youtube it gives me these videos about apparently citizen of USA saying lots of good things about Finland? I dont mind, dont get me wrong, but why now? Dont seem like there would be a need for a political stunt at the moment? Greetings from Finland.
That elevator thing was funny, cos we really don't use them :D elevators are normally for elderly. normaly there aren't many floors anywere. Just walk few stairs. :D, sorry for my bad grammar, and good video.

The scariest thing is a random hug? Sounds Finnish enough :)
Most of the elevators in Finland are just like everywhere in the world. Elevator company "Kone Oyj" is from Finland. It's no. 1 or 2 in the world on their own field of expertise lol.
@Jaski Kiiski miks en oo yllättynyt
Scariest thing to happen in Finland was the time someone tried to hug you because he was drunk. 😂 That pretty much sums it up. 😂
Every-Mans-Rights' is a thing what every country should look into.
Scariest thing about Finland? Drunk man trying to give a friendly hug :D
Great video and all the info was correct. One thing though: sidewalks are being plowed before pebbling them, otherwise no one could walk in the snow. Pebbles just prevent falling on slippery surface. Other than that, incredible Finnish skills in 18 months 👍👌👏

She still speaks Finnish well 😊
When the scariest experience in Finland is a random guy trying to hug you 😂
I think you are the right person to introduce Finland to the whole world. What a sharp lady.
Ok finally somebody pronounces sauna correctly! Good job!
I really enjoyed your video! You described Finland so well and positively, thank you! I grew up in Finland, now live in US, miss Finland so much!
Aaaawww... You're so sweet!
Olipa ihana video! Kiitos! Lovely video! Thank You!
as a Finn it's great to hear a view looking from the outside inwards. never realised .thanks for the input! Appreciate.

1,5 year in Finland and you speak finnish so well!! WOW
Thank you. I am speechless. Giant appreciations from Finland.

So cute❤ Don't worry about making mistakes while speaking Finnish, 99% of the time we can still understand 😊
Amazing finnish after just 1,5 years of learning.
ne opiskelee pitkää kohde maan kieltä enne matkustamista, hyvi puhu silti
Sidewalks are plowed here. Also only some elevators are like that and they are usually older models.
Hi,
I work in the elevator business. Most elevators in Finland are the same as anywhere else in the world, whether it's made by KONE, Schindler or Otis. What you're describing is an old elevator found in older flats for example but modernization is possible to those as well if wanted.
We actually do plow our streets in winter when it snows or else there would be couple meters of snow at the end of the winter.

0:22 Lady:I love how peaceful Finland is
Background: Rock band starts playing heavy metal
She is the only one who described Riisipiirakka correctly :) and yes its awesome :D
In Finland we don't judge. I rather thank you for kind words! So thank You!
that kind of elevators are hard to find in finland
ei vanhoist taloista
Thanks to you for the kind words!
I have never seen that kind of elevayor in Finland and I live in Finland
Whaa? I've never seen any other kind.
Maybe you misunderstood what she was trying to explain.
ne on yleensä vanhoissa taloissa
tapaamaan = to meet and tappamaan = to kill
I just loved the US mostly because it's so not like Finland... Thank you! You make us to think, how it is here.

Hey, im from Finland
Beautiful video, kiitos! ❤️
What an amazing sweet girl! Thank You for Your kind words!
The bad side with the delicious Finnish pulla is that over time you become a pulla yourself if you eat them every day (and we do) 😂
The elevators you mentioned are only in older apartment buildings (100+ years old)
Our building from the 60's has one of those :)
Where on earth did she live that she managed to find those old-style elevators without inner doors? Just about the only time I've ever seen them was when I took a trip to Helsinki. And I find it extremely difficult even there they don't plow the streets and sidewalks.
Good job with the information! For once, it’s very accurate👍.
"Lot of Finns don't like Mämmi" Never heard that before!
Kiitos! 🇫🇮
You took my heart away! Olet niin sydämellinen ja ihana ihminen.
You can't understate this! We Finns have a habit of doing that. maybe we are worthy after all. despite all the whipping we serve onto us. obviously some honour to be granted. thank you.
What she describes is city living in finland.. Its even better when your out in yhe countryside.
Nicely done, Thumbs up! Thank you for sharing your experience. Wow I am impressed, but it is hard to believe though, speaking finnish well enough after only a short stay. How is it possible?
Nice, you mentioned Vaasa (my home town)
Mämmi is better with the cream but without the sugar. Also, there are less sweet variants that quite frankly have a superior taste.
Greetings from Finland :) welcome back summer
You speak so good Finnish , and have learnEd that In so short of time onnittelut😀
welcome back beauty :)
You are very welcome here any day. Despite being irreligious I don't hate you guys and probably you have made many peoples' life better.

The gravel/rocks are not used for the same purpose again instead they go to land fills on building sites etc. Or that's how it's supposed to be anyway.
I can't wait for the U.S. international travel ban to be lifted, I really want to visit Finland. Btw huge Nightwish fan.
Didn't get the elevator thing at all... I used those vintage "cage"-boxes for 20 years and during all that time "had" to rode with some neighbor maybe 30 times at most.
I love Finland.
Actually you can't find blueberries from finnish forests, what we have in here (and plenty on those) are bilberries. Oddly more blue than blueberriers (blue also inside when blueberries are whitish).
Kiitos, ja tervetuloa takaisin!
A girl who likes the simple things in life? I think I'm in love.
We don't celebrate Christmas in Finland, we celebrate Yule which is a non-religious feast.
Not all elevators😁 only older buildings have such small elevators! 😅
You speak good finnish
The roads are plowed as well.
you do understand that "Kone" makes elevators around the world... and that is finnish elevator company xD
