Final day for Texas Rock Fest '98. Extol performing songs from Burial, Undeceived (alternate lyrics), Northern Lights and Vengeance Rising Cover (Warfare).
Would love to see any current metal band play this tight and strong live. Most bands are now lost without any technology. The mix for a flatbed is perfect, the sound tech was a wizard. Extol performed a 5,000-capacity concert for 30 people; they were blessed that day.
I did! I was with them at the same hotel, talking, having breakfast, having fun at the pool, Olé equalized our guitar sound for our show (Tabernáculo) just before their show. An awesome experience.
This video is honestly, absolutely uncanny... It is UNREAL how ahead of their time Extol was... and the fact that they are playing in the middle of a field, in mid-day sunlight to a tiny crowd in Texas boarders on the SURREAL... I can't believe how good the video quality is for 1998. I would give almost anything to have been there.
I agree with you 100%. This is an incredible capture of an absolutely top tier band. Extol is insanely good. I see this video every so often and I'm just so bummed that I'll never have a chance to see them live.
This is amazing!! That performance of Burial is insanely tight...David was absolutely a monster on the kit, even way back then. I can't believe I was only 13 when they were at this level.
Was 12 myself and my cousin had just given me a copy of Burial when I went to visit some family at the time. He probably still doesn't know that he kicked off my lifetime metal obsession
increíble men nunca me canso de verlo, una excelente banda por que lo guardaste tanto tiempo la verdad te envidio de no estar hay, y gracias por compartirlo disfruto mucho viendolo
Awesome! I'm from Holland and was interning at HM at the time and I got to review the festival. Had a great time hanging out with these guys and talking about soccer. I remember some big ass tarantulas falling on stage out of the trees, later at night. Needless to say, I did not spend another night in my tent. I met some awesome people there as well that did catering for this event. In short: great memories!
We, as foreigner bands touring without our own gear (I played with Tabernaculo from Mexico City, right before Extol), used to play with borrowed gear from the band “Wrench” and others. I guess you’re right about the Marshall.
This is so cool; thanks for posting! They sound so good, even in the early days! I'm curious what the story behind this gig is; how does a band from Norway end up at some random show in the middle of Texas? Haha
This is blowing my mind. I had no idea they ever came anywhere in the South. Very surreal to see one of the greatest metal bands to ever exist playing on a flatbed trailer to 15 people. I can't believe how tight they were. It's even crazier to hear Undeceived content 2 years before it was released.
@@djbrotherelectric that is some incredible news! I didn't even know about this until I read your comment. The rest of the lineup is amazing as well! Thanks man!
@Justin Burdette yeah, the revival of Furnace fest has been killing. Glad the promoters took a step back, let it become somewhat of a legendary idea , comeback and make some profits. Sometimes time is the investment
I fucking love Extol and I’m not alone in saying that they shook a lot of shit up for me, music wise. Crazy that they sound so good in 98 on the back of a trailer in Texas. I really wish I wasn’t 1 year old when this happened…
This video is very valuable record ! Time - Song title (Album title, Track Number) 0:34 - Just a part of "Released Upon The Earth", Vengeance Rising cover (Released Upon The Earth, Track 3) 1:04 - Part of Undeceived (Undeceived, Track 2) 1:45 - A structure of souls (Undeceived, Track 7) 4:26 - Burial (Burial, Track 3) 8:59 - Christianity misunderstood (Northern Lights-Norwegian Metal Compilation Split Album, Track 11) 13:21 - Celestial completion (Burial, Track 2) 19:18 - Superior (Burial, Track 5) 24:09- Justified (Burial, Track 7) 28:21 - Embraced (Burial, Track 8) 32:00 - Warfare, Vengeance Rising Cover (Once dead, Track 1)
DUDE IM SO PSYCHED YOU POSTED THIS!! I'm the tall dude with the bandana on my head. Extol stayed in our hotel room the night before cuz they over booked rooms. Wow great memories!
+Scottsterb b I remember you. We were in the same hotel, we were hanging with them at the pool, and having nice talks with Ole at breakfast time. I played with Tabernaculo band that year before the Extol show.
Can we talk about how good of a vocalist Peter is??? So much range On embraced, he sounds SO good when he goes from “SURVIVING….“. Into the “WIIIIIITH..DEEMONS!!!” One of my favorite songs of all time performed to a godly level. On the back of a trailer
I drove down from Oklahoma for this festival. I was sitting with Alan Tregoning of Cross Rhythms Music, because he was gracious enough to let me sit with him under his canopy. It was RIDICULOUSLY hot those three days.
What an awesome impromtu performance. Extol is the best Christian Metal band on planet earth. A shame they don't put out albums more regularly. I swear we seem to only get 1 or 2 a decade
I saw Extol several times live back then in Finland, Sweden and Norway, but one of the coolest gigs was in Finnish club about this era. I remember the amount of badassness when the whole stage was just FULL of hair circling and yet the Death Metal was so astonishingly accurate and well played and tight.
It's not like the modern Djent which I love, but here I sit a 56 yr old man in tears and all emotional because through some hard times in 03 this band got me through it all. The music and vibe speaks to me. I got to see them live, one of the best shows ever, and I've been to a lot of shows trust me. Sad I never found them until the 02 but they are forever in my heart along with the Lord they serve. Thank you uploader!
I've seen them two times. The first time they warmed up for Opeth and the second time they had their last concert (2014). Finally, after about 8 years away from music, Peter Espevoll is back with another project (Hrada) :D Several of the other former Extol bandmates have their own bands now :)
@@joshkuchmy8801 schaliach was a band Ole Børud was in before Extol. He was a huge fan of old Anathema material, so it has some simularities with Anathema and Amorphis :) you can find Schaliach on bandcamp and also some songs here on youtube. Børud has some great solos in that band :D
I believe this was their first show in the US. Very few people knew of them. I saw them a few days later at Cornerstone when Lament gave up half of their set so Extol could play in the HM tent. Life changing experience.

I was at this festival. I'm a Dutchie and was interning at HM at the time. I slept in a tent the first night but soon found out the place was crawling with tarantula's at night so I slept in a minivan the following night. I remember one band playing and during their set a tarantula fell from the trees onto the stage. I recall buying a pair of shorts and a belt from a band with their own clothing line. Anyone remember the name of the brand or the band?
So apparently I have to little going on in my life I felt the need to tell this story twice, 4 years apart. Completely forgot I already found this video before I guess.
Jeez...I know it was '98 and most ppl don't care for our type of music, but the tiny crowd just upsets me. They're better here on the back on a flatbed than most of headlining popular bands I've seen live lol. If I wasn't 12yrs old at the time and could actually travel on my own I would've found a way to get there
Probably because Extol were from Norway and from what I've read in the comments, that this were their first show. Even though Extol split up in 2014/2015, several of the members still play, but in different bands. Azusa, Fleshkiller, Mantric, Lengsel, and soon the vocalist will be releasing a record from his new project, Hrada :)

Undeceived songs being played in 1998?!? Awesome! It was a preview of things to come two years early!
What a small crowd for such an amazing performance :p
This was there first show in the US. I was there. They played Cornerstone next and got signed with Solid State and the rest is history. :)

Who played bass on this show??
Eystein Holm, he was the bass player in Burial album.
Sound is excellent compared to visual. Guessing this was a cheap camcorder. I was at this concert
buddypng31 I improved the sound during the export to digital.
@@apolosleon who filmed this? If it wasnt you it might have been myself, the poor panning, closeups etc was exactly how i filmed back then
