A flying/floating Atlantis
So many bangers in the chrono trigger soundtrack, hope you'll do more!
A song that melds both exoticism, and nostalgia.
And a personal favorite of mine. Thanks for covering it! ^_^
One of the best JRPGs of all time
The soundtrack for Chrono Trigger was (mostly) Yasunori Mitsuda with a few tracks by Nobuo Uematsu.
Pretty easy to tell who did which pieces- Uematsu is all about aggressive bass lines. Mitsuda is all about mellow neoclassical beats.
Damn this song makes me tear up.
It reminds me a lot of Pokemon mystery dungeon music I can’t explain put it into words but they have a similar vibe.
A feature that I like about this song that I rarely hear brought up in analyses and fan remixes:
The Xylophone(?) is in stereo, almost 3D audio. As the background melody repeats, you hear it shift around, hitting a different note on each of the four cardinal directions.
As if a clock hitting 3, 6, 9, and 12.
It's most obvious with headphones on.
The kingdom of magic Zeal, thought itself to be at the apex, but got corrupted by their arrogance. Kicked out the "unworthy" and thought, that since nothing stands above them, they could dabbel with creation itself and got burned badly for it. The average Zeal citizen prefers sleeping above having to do nothing, since the government and magic deals with everything.
What makes the song truly special is the context. It just opens up a new world of possibilities, for the third or four time in the game. You just beat what you think is the main boss; and you are thrown in a world of nothingness. Then you find an altar, and you are suddenly taken to a floating real of advanced magic and technology. And the song starts. This is brilliant.
The pizzicato strings are a great addition. They make it sound adventurous in addition to already being exotic.
Honestly, never played chrono trigger or watched a playthrough, but this is in my top 10 video game tracks for sure. It's just so mystical and mysterious
the main ostinato is played by those gamelian gongs. It is also an oriental instrument

Wow man good memories! I played this game 3 times during the past 10 years. It's a classic! This track is very relaxing as well. Favorite theme is the one from the battle with Magus. Great video!
Yasunori Mitsuda is a legendary composer.
One of the percussion sound was made by "gamelan".

I played this game late as well. Same for most JRPG's because... living in Europe meant you had to miss out on most JRPG's. Hurrah for piracy though, introduced me to a crapload of great games I missed out on from the 4th and 5th generation.
Since you've checked this out, you should definitely check out "Ohmu" from Nausicaa. I have no doubt that it served as the inspiration for this piece, you'll understand right away when you hear it.
