In this episode, my husband Brett and I discuss my new kitchen appliance purchase. We review comments about different podcast titles and I look up our zodiac sign compatibility. We dive into Brett’s “celebrity” bio, and our fitness routines. Then, we switch gears to discuss the current state of nursing and compare the healthcare industry to the airline industry. To close out we read shoutouts submitted through my website nurseblake.com. Each week we will take on a new nursing topic and bring up questions and stories submitted by our listeners.

Nurse Blake, would you please do an interview with a nurse from another country, preferably a country with socialized health care. I am very interested to know if they experience similar systemic inefficiencies within their hospitals. I'd also like to know if they have unique problems in socialized medicine. Thank you, love your show.

Great idea! Its important to remember two things with socialized med. A) all systems have unique struggles and B) not all country run health systems are the same. Good to learn all the different options.

Blake, thank you so much for sharing the story about the NICU nurse floating and feeling unsafe. I'm a maternity nurse, and I've caring for women's and children for 8 years. Recently we also have been required to float and do 1:1's. And even some of the basic cares, we don't do and don't feel comfortable with. I feel many of us have been put into unsafe conditions because we don't have that experience! All of your statements about staffing, patient safety, and staff satisfaction truly hits home! ❤️

I've been a nurse almost 49 years and so much of what you discussed have been a problem for a long time. I have moved from an old hospital into a new build and no nurse was ever consulted in the way the new ER was layed out . You can imagine what we got. Keep up the good work. Hopefully administration understands after the pandemic what nursing means for their hospital. I'm a clinical instructor and I worry for my baby nurses

Holy smokes....you've been a nurse for as long as I've been alive! I hope your students know how lucky they are & take advantage of picking your brain! I've been an LPN for 18 years & will be taking the NCLEX RN when I'm 50 .... given the current state of things, I hope I'm lucky enough to experience clinical with great instructors (and actual patients lol)

One of my frustrations is that in the past year, we don't even have enough staff to float. We either have to work overtime (that we'd rather not do) or work short staffed. It's tough because you want your time off that you're due, but you also don't want to leave your teammates and patients hanging.

I will say that having a nurse on the design team is a life saver. I volunteered at a very small hospital in my area, and they didn’t even have ER or ICU until about 5 years ago. When they decided to build those 2 units on a nurse stepped in and said “If we are going to have an ER and an ICU people are going to die so we need a morgue!” They were like what do you mean and they didn’t have a morgue so the nurses were putting the dead bodies on the loading dock behind the hospital until the funeral home picked them up. I was so shocked and if it hadn’t been for that nurse stepping up they probably still wouldn’t have a morgue. I’m sure the doctors hated her saying something because the morgue took the spot of their physicians lounge.

Brett-THANK YOU for really summing up what it means to be floated! Your perspective on nursing topics is refreshing.
It’s like your comments make it OKAY to feel the way one does when being floated to an unfamiliar area. I teach full-time now (and remember how it feels to float), but I can only imagine what my recent grads have experienced in their transition to practice. Shout out to the new nurses in 2020 and 2021!

I’m feeling this NICU nurse! I am a labor and delivery nurse and for the last year we’re constantly being floated out to the house. It’s upsetting on so many levels! Though I have been a MedSurg nurse in the past and am very capable of taking care of them, there is a reason I left. It gives me such anxiety when I get to work just to be floated. Also, because L&D is so specialized, literally no other nurse from any other unit can float to labor and delivery and help us out when we’re short staffed and crazy busy. We’ve had probably a third of our staff leave over the last year. It’s very sad.

  • @JennyLouRN

I love to float!! I do NICU, newborn nursery, Postpartum, OR, L&D, Tele, Acute Rehab, Surgical, and have worked the Covid unit. I like the surprise when I find out I’m floating to somewhere new, and I enjoy knowing I’m comfortable caring for adults, infants, and the elderly. The only thing I don’t do is Pediatrics, because we don’t have a Peds unit, lol.

Brett hit the nail on the head! A construction crew came through and remodeled our outpatient department. They didn't ask the nurses or MAs for input on the best way to lay out the department! They ended up configuring the area so less check in staff could be utilized (to save money). Then Covid came and we had sick and well patients in the same waiting room!! And yes... we are now required to "help each other out" so the float differential can be saved.
If only there was hope the profession will change.

I Love your stories. I am not the cook in the house but sometimes I get these ideas to just make these elaborate dinners. When I tell my husband I am making something I usually have this receipe I got online. I always start off great but usually call my husband to help me measure something or for help. Before I know it I am sitting on the living room couch and he is in the kitchen cooking the dinner I got a receipe for. After all is said and done I say " wow babe. I did a good job.!" He usually just looks at me and say " yea, you did." I love him. ❤️

The Maytag Man was also the star of Eureka, on the sci fi network. I can see the resemblance. I still remember my 40th birthday, had a great party. Love your new podcast and have always loved your page on Facebook with your hilarious videos! I’m 9 months away from graduating with my BSN. I’m working through school and have been a CNA for 4 years. An issue I have discussed often with my coworkers is the compensation nurses receive in some states, specifically Utah where I currently work, being way lower than it should be. Additionally, I often discuss how hard it is for nursing staff to get breaks. Often times we are working for 8 hrs or more straight before a 30-min break and have to stuff food in our mouths on the go. I feel a 1-hr break should be normalized for 12-hr shifts especially with the physical demands of nursing. Most companies get away with giving two 15-minute breaks and one 30 minute break but staff is always so busy the 15s are never taken. One 30 minute break in a 12 hr shift really is nuts when you consider any other job doing this to their hard working staff. I love you mentioned we have to care for ourselves in order to care for our patients. So true!

Thanks for this topic Blake, it's something that is going on forever at the hospital and in LTC, and it's something that "you're not supposed to talk about," because patients cannot know that you're working on your own in your shift. So suck it up if your patient falls cause nobody's there to watch them while they're having their confusion, if patient yells at you because you're not there on time that they push call light for help, and get yelled at by the MD because you're calling them in the middle of the night to report of your patient falling with injury. And to top it all, your manager calls you the next day because you didn't finish your charting and to investigate about the patient fall. Fun times!

And to not have the patient bathroom door and the patient bed to line up perfectly so that there isn't enough room to walk by the foot of the bed without getting hung on a door handle or SCD machine or wound VAC!!!

Yeah, nursing school during covid is rough. My clinicals this semester extend until after this semester ends and into the summer semester. 😅

The PSP 😂😂😂 I was dead! My first few shifts as a PCT I was always sooo nervous that i had to find my perfect bathroom for a little pre-shift me time 😆 now I’m an RN at the same hospital and I’m like telling all the new people where to go 😂

I have mandatory meetings every Wednesday from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm, after working night shift. Thankfully it is on TEAMS. Ugh! Lol

I’ve considered nursing before but I think I’m too old to go to school for it now. I’m 32, I’ll be 33 in October. How long is schooling??

SUGGESTION for a podcast: Your Orientation to your Hospital How was it? What did you have to do? How much online computer education (regulatory) did you have to do?
What about a Podcast on your Annual Education requirements?
    Equipment updates?
How to use a (Hoyer-type) lift - that would be hysterical if you suddenly found a patient on the floor and no one could find the lift!
BRETT DOES look like the Son of Maytag Man!
