This was a nice work with the theme "don't look for the hidden folk, or they will look for you!" Which can range from inconvenient to deadly. Heck "The White Vault" series is predicated on not looking at the horrors to avoid mind control and violent death. There are multiple human traditions of regular offering to the spirits, and making sure your house/village/field spirits are happy, so they leave you alone. When monotheism comes through, the worship building and religious leader are considered a safe zone and having power over those old spirits, if they get unruly.

In childhood, you understand the awe and wonder of all God's creations. As we grow older, that awe is replaced by repetition. When we go new places and see new things, that awe comes back is short measure.
Children see the world differently because they are literally high. Their nrain chemistry is extremely similar to someone micro dosing mushrooms. They literally see colors nore vividly hear things better ect. As adults we go through neural pruning. Which literally lowers our senses and feelings outside of extreme situations. Kids are high. All the time.
