Purgatorio
From The Divine Comedy
By Robert W. Smith
Item: 00-BD9751
Series: Belwin Classic Band
Level: 4
This appearance of Purgatorio marks the second movement of Robert W. Smith's first symphony for band, The Divine Comedy. Following the hugely successful introduction of the other three movements, Purgatorio leads us through a contemplation of Purgatory. Seldom has the launching of a work for concert band more quickly captured the attention of the band director community. Multiple all-state, honor band, conference and convention performances have already taken place and are firmly scheduled into the future. This is a truly monumental work that lifts the wind band genre to new levels

Rest in peace Robert W. Smith 🙏 Purgatorio was one of my favorite pieces to perform on bass drum!
I still can't believe he passed away. I'm very lucky that I've gotten to learn how to conduct the entirety of this symphony, and I honestly wish he could've seen it. Robert W. Smith was one of the greatest musicians of our time, for sure, and he will be missed by so many that have gotten to know him, his music, and his legacy. Rest easy, Mr. Smith. 😔
I have the pleasure of being the solo flute part in my university’s concert next week and I’m so excited! Rip Robert W. Smith
I honestly would start applauding when the whole band says “Gloria” in unison.
2:55 The epic transition starts
1:20 for aome reason the entire swction gives me the vibes of music in Eldin Volcano from The Legend of Zelda totk
I love the fast tempo 5:23
thanks steven
1:20 this part for me is basically Freedom by Chales Mingus but with a more interesting rhythmic feel
this is like arabesque
... h o w
If anything it’s like Gollum
Not for upper winds lol
@@ajplaysalot7161 arabesque is killer for high WW
This is nowhere near Arabesque. Not going to go into detail about how different they are, but I've played both, and Arabesque is a completely different level
1:02 2:28 6:18
This is just the easy chill version of Africa🥴
my high school band is playing this and by far this is an easy piece of music.
I’m playing this right now too and I agree this piece sounds way better then it is hard but the solos for soprano sax are insanely hard and I have them
@@thintellect6103 yes i fully agree on that part. the soprano saxophonist, max (not his name as I don't wish to disclose his real name) has took the last few weeks mastering it. by now he can get it. our teacher is very proud of our group
@@ruby-iz8cb very hard piece of music and tells a great story though. My band is playing the whole divine comedy and it’s great, you feel really connected to the main character Dante.
@@thintellect6103 yes i feel connected to dante. my band has played the song over and over I know it like the back of my hand. yet in the start I struggled with the tempo changes but soon adapted to them
@@ruby-iz8cb yes tempo was a bit confusing in bits but it’s a great piece and sounds so much better then people think it is complex. What instrument are you playing?
The trumpet part before the end
is it me or towards the beginning does the saxs E not an E but a B
The Soprano Sax is a B-flat instrument
i’m not gonna lie the french horns notes cracked way too many times even in the middle notes, especially in the epic parts. as a french horn player that’s what bothers me about this recording.
I had just noticed that lol
Bad mouthpiece choice probably.
definitely bad mouthpiece choice, you can tell by the tone quality
Nah, good players can make do with poor equipment. They were just not ready for this piece
OK so one of the people in my school band's name is Gloria, so... I bet that would feel pretty awkward for her, even though we aren't playing this song (mainly because its summer but who knows)
Do Mallets use bass clef? If not, then why does it show a base clef?
@@ammoniumlactate5640 I already know that a timpani uses a bass clef. The thing is that I didn't know that Mallets use bass clef, I see them a lot of the time with a treble clef
@@BladeTNT2018 that is because Mallets are usually played by one person or in the higher register instruments like Glockenspiel and Vibraphone. Marimba I'd actually supposed to have been written in grand staff (Piano's Treble and Bass clef).
@@BladeTNT2018 Marimba uses bass clef if the part is low enough
marimba uses bass clef with four mallets or if the part is really low

Why are they moaning 😭
Tf did I just listen to?
called purgatario for a reason i guess 😃
@@justinsilva38 truu
It's based of a book by Dante Alhergi.
First
LC72 perks of being the only hornist atm
Percussion too loud
Its what we do best ;)

No u
@@ashpitti6797 As a percussionist myself, I can confirm that :)
i believe the percussion is meant to be the focus, kind of
