Good for you Mr Bleecker and Mike Rowe is a great teacher an example to follow and I'm certainly glad you did and I know you are. He's having a good life and hopefully you're doing the same brother.
I remember the episode. I live 26 miles north of the bridge. Have walked it 11 times. Driven it over 1000 times easy. Came across one moonless night with all the bridge lights out. Only car on the bridge. That was creepy.
Mike is a rare gem among men. The things he has done, the stories he's told and yet to tell and the wisdom he has shared generously and happily attest to the incredible nature of this man.
I crossed it in heavy winds. Truck in front of me had the tractor portion in one lane and trailer yawed into the other as we headed north. We were the last to cross before they closed it for high winds.
Went across one winter night ( dark ) in a windy snow storm in the early 70s on our way to the Soo 500 snowmobile race with a trailer and sleds. They let us on and closed the bridge behind us. We were the last car across that night. THAT was scary in that wind and dark. I was around 12 I believe. My sister was afraid of bridges. 😂
Mighty Mac, yes sir. I was on the painting crew for 2 years. Ive crawled everywhere under the road deck and been inside the towers. One of the coolest jobs ive had. 😎🤘
The best part was when they were done, Mike made the comment time to go down... Thinking they had to walk back down... NOT, foreman told him that they are going to take the one person at a time elevator down 😅😅😅😅
I gew up near the Macinaw Bridge and have been across it dozens of times, in the 80's a women driving a compact car actually blew off the bridge, and dropped the 150 some feet and died slamming into the water below. My dad used to scare my little sister and I with this story to the point we'd hide under the dash of his truck in the footwells while crossing the bridge in the late 90's.
Those of us who live in Michigan and cross that monster from time to time know how intimidating it is to cross in a car. I can't imagine climbing up on it to change a lightbulb.
I am a native and drove that bridge in my F350 with crew cab and full 8' box on a very windy day and was worried we were going to be blown off. The wind was pushing my truck all over. Several million dollars would not have gotten me to change a light bulb.
Mike Rowe should be the reader of so many things like James Earl Jones used to do as they have that perfect voice thats so easily understood and a certain delivery that works no matter what the subject is...
As someone who worked as a tower technician and, among other things, changed light bulbs in such structures I'm not surprised they would welcome a free job. I spent a week up there snowed in.
I grew up in Michigan. have been across that bridge many times! It is a scary distance from the deck to the water. I can’t imagine being any higher than the pavement!
The Mackinac Bridge is amazing and built in a beautiful and dangerous location. I grew up in Michigan and made many trips to and across the bridge. Lots of people are afraid to drive across. My first time driving across was also my first time driving a motor home when i was 18 with my future father in law hanging over my shoulder the whole time. It was his motor home.
We Michiganders are from tough stock & them Yoopers are a different breed! (I'm a Troll because I live below the Bridge). I saw that bridge episode. That was awesome!

The first time I crossed the Mac, my sphincter slammed shut too. I’m not typically afraid of heights, nor bridges. But the Mac will remind you what the fear of God should be in our heart.
❤️💯just like in Marines! They took my hillbilly ass on a shooting mission cause they knew I good with the helicopter and the the machine guns and they used me a gunner on the helicopter
I live in Michigan, my late husband had a boss he worked for that had worked on the bridge.he was there when he seen one of the workers on the bridge fall into the water,he quit right then.
