Just for my first bass after half a lifetime of wanting one, thank you for such great info! It came tuned to drop d and I'm not totally sure if I should keep learning in drop d or switch it to standard as I'm such a noob :)
With regular pentatonic scales, it´s not a big deal...but try (in standart tuning absolut simple) figures like the line of Bryan Ferry´s "Lets stick together"...in a 1-4-5 form. You will have to do immense "runs" on the fretboard...Or the figure of Little Richards " Lucille"... The same. If you have to play stuff like that in the low D register, its better to use the D tuning ..or a five string.
Whoa.............that's different. Not judging, but that's different. Ab???? Now I do think that's a crazy but genius idea. I can see it having some benefits if I were to give it an honest shot. Since drop D puts your fifth fret at a G on the E string, setting your A string to Ab gives you some continuity without you having to reach for it. So I'm not knocking your method. It's just......I don't know if I can (or should) rewire my brain that hard. I already need to rewire it for drop D alone. 😅
That is a great question, I don't personally because the vast majority of people can't hear a difference. Ideally you would have 2 or more basses set up specifically for all the tunings you want to use.
I'm a guitarist by habit/practice; therefore I do not consider myself a bassist. *Do any bassists ever like playing in a drop-tuning?* I personally don't like playing bass in that tuning (something about scale length and left hand technique limitations, I guess). But I understand why one would have to in a band situation.
Thinking about theory in Drop D is a headache. This was helpful. Thanks!
at 2:40 i was praying for him to hit the opening notes to TOOL -Opiate
Thanks Jeff, good lesson!
Ah, I needed this! Thanks Jeff!

Love watching you play.....come back to Angola Indiana
Thank you, Jeff
Thank you! This is the explanation I was looking for.
We need more !
How about some videos with pentatonic scales or whatever in drop d?

Thanks a lot!
1:43 2:12super 🎉
Thank you
On top of lowering my bottom string to D I also lower the 2nd string from A to Ab. I dunno why I do it, it just works for me

👍👍👍
is it necessary to change the string or to do any adjustments on the thrust rod in order to adapt the bass for this tuning? thanks
