- Here it is...the video I have been dreaming to make. This is my review and vinyl shoot out of the Van Halen self titled Mobile Fidelity One Step remastered by Krieg Wunderlich. I have many different versions of this album and in this video, I share the results of a blind shoot out my husband and I conducted with a very worthy opponent. How does the Mobile Fidelity One Step compare with the rest? Stay tuned to find out.

i really don´t understand MOFI ,they had a lot of work and they released a entire new turntable when hearing it for the first time i don´t even consider it as being good but aceptable for today´s standarts, i´m not saying i have the best turntable ,but still recording Demos for new bands in my city with great quality ,also the other day i thought that i´m still in contact with new generations and notice how kids are diferent from when i grew up ,but i acept they´re speach if it is not hatefull, that i think it made me live always with youth and with older friends since i was 4 years old(that i remenber) and still today we talk a lot but in other way i also knew all generations after mine even kids i knew when i was in my late 20´s today are old and the ones that didn´t die are still my friends, that´s the funny thing with life throwing at us ,the death of most of our friends, that´s why some older people don´t want to live but they are almost 110 years old and they look and talk like it is a punishment being alive, i hope i don´t arrive to that place in time ,i was a heavy user of all drugs known to men and a heavy smoker but when i make tests ,medics say you have healthy lungs ,i fell the will to laugh, i heard smoking is bad for your health i was a heavy consumer of all but yet to feel bad, i´m in my 80 year on this life i´ve experimented life as good as i could and still do, i´m not going to sleep thinking that it might be the last time i´m waken but some of my friends do, sorry for this not about the matter in discuss speach but something lead me to it,maybe remenber listening in my recent bought home this album with some of my friends that most of them are still alive but always missing someone that didn´t arrive to the 50´s,men or women
Krieg is quickly becoming my favorite mastering engineer.
So, you have to play the one step at 45rpm setting on your turntable?
I'm probably most excited for Fair Warning but still really looking forward to this on both vinyl and SACD. I've loved Van Halen since I could first afford to buy cassette tapes with my allowance back in the mid 80's. Thank you for taking the time to make this thoughtful review. I'm really glad to see that Mofi respects the ladies in this hobby.

Happy you were able to get the Mofi and that you love it so much! VH is an extremely important band to me too. I was in 7th grade when the debut came it and I was an instant fan. Totally flabbergasted. I totally agree that the DLR years were the magic years. I like the Sammy era too but it just wasn’t quite the same. I love videos like this where someone is bringing up memories associated with the music and singing parts of songs. It just shows your passion for the band. I’m so glad you did this one. I’m a fan of Phillip, but I love Atomic Punk and every song on VH debut lol. Oh and I also loved your story about the waitress. Melinda, these videos make me smile 😊

The album came out when I was in high school, our minds got blown! The guitar sound, the drums, Dave’s voice with Micheal backing him up. It was like nothing we heard before! I’ve seen VH at Lakeland civic center 8 times, front row every time, bending that plywood! lol I’ll never forget the first time, Edward noodling before the curtain opened, playing the theme to the Munsters, then pow! Dave jumping doing splits, the band jamming to I’m the One, chills!over the years, I got several picks, Alex’s burnt drum heads and Dave’s autograph and talked to him for a bit, hilarious! Even saw VHagar couple times, it was ok, lol

My One-Step Finally arrived yesterday! Only waited for 3 years LOL. MoFi did do a very good job, better than I expected. I did do an A/B with the One-Step against my 1978 Test pressing "LW1 F.E. / LW1" in the deadwax and my full 1978 LP Promo with "LW1 F.E. / LW2" in the deadwax. These two have beat out 80+ variants that I own of this LP. The One-Step did have the low end, mid and the clarity of my Test pressing & Promo, but the highs on the One-Step are very bright (not very natural sounding). It really stands out when the volume is cranked up. MoFi is very good but not great, a bit bright on my system. If it's bright on my system which is an all-tube system, it might be very bright on a solid state system. That's my take.
SYSTEM: McIntosh MC2102 tube amp. McIntosh C2300 tube pre-amp, McIntosh MT5 turntable, Clearaudio Concerto V2 MC cart, Sonos Faber Amati G5 speakers.
I appreciate that you shared your honest opinion. This version is a little bright. I personally think it sounds great but if Dave had a high range on his vocals the brightness might have been a problem for me too. I agree that MoFi did a very good job. This is a tough record to take on. It's one of the best records of all time. ♥️ Thank you and take care.

What I like about VH is that they shared writing credit. Great to hear you are happy with the new release. Got to be a lot of happy Van Halen fans. Standing on chairs. My daughter and I were at an Aerosmith concert at the Tacoma Dome off on the left side of the stage back a way. It was sparse. Skid Row opened. Then when Aerosmith began, it got packed. People were standing on our chairs. I thought, hey, no problem, we aren't going to sit. Wonderful experience. Thanks.

Great video Melinda! Such a classic album that I listen to all the time. I will never forget when my cousin first played this for me. She said " Wait till you hear this!" I will never forget that opening bass riff of Running With The Devil, and of course the great Eruption. I was just blown away. Awesome video. Great album, it was the first Van Halen record I ever bought - as a 17 year old in 1987 - I still have the LP, "Atomic Punk" was my absolute favourite on this.

I got so excited when I saw the thumbnail to this vid lol. I immediately went over to music direct and ordered it, and of course came back to watch the entire vid. I love hearing you talk about Van Halen! My favorite is when you imitate parts of the songs lol, rather it be the instruments or vocal parts. This album is an all time fave, and a perfect album. The guitar tone Eddie had on this was so unique and distinct, and still is to this day. And like you said, everyone in the band each brings something special. I can talk about Van Halen all day lol. Oh, and On Fire being a complete mess might be your husband’s hottest take yet lol

Fantastic Review Melinda!!! I am going to pick this up for sure!! Loving my MoFi Studiodeck!! This will sound Amazing for sure! I have there 1978 Winchester 1st pressing. Sounds fantastic but Can't beat a MoFi one step! Atomic Punk and Little Dreamer are my favorites on that album. Little Dreamer bring back sentimental memories for me.

Not overall the biggest Van Halen fan myself, but what an incredible album! Just hearing it mentally and emotionally jolts me right back to the better aspects of my being in my mid-late teenage years in the early 80s when I first heard this album and bought it. I was blown away when I got the Bellman cut, so I'm really considering plunking down the cash for this release on vinyl (also comes in SACD, which I'll definitely get, regardless). This one is rough for me. Pretty jaded with MOFI, but at the end of the day I love great music and want the best sounding version of any great album. As much as I don’t want to support them, they might get my money again for this one.
I was thinking back to all of your many videos I've seen while watching this video. You have never been more excited about a vinyl record than this one; it really made me smile. 😊 This One Step is a 45 rpm release, and a lot of the records you compared are 33 1/3 rpm. It's a bit unfair to compare a 45 rpm record to a 33 1/3 rpm. When the 50th Anniversary of the release of this album comes around, I hope somebody like Chad presses it 100% analogue and maybe even in a UHQR. Now that would be the cat's meow. 😻 Regardless of my personal tastes, I'm very happy to hear that this new release is what you hoped it would be, a kind of early Christmas celebration. 🎄 That's always a very sweet moment to find a vinyl record that knocks your socks off. 👏 By the way, if someone doesn't want the One Step or can't afford it, which of the other versions would you recommend as a great second choice? 🤔

This was the first hardrock album i ever bought and i was 12 years old. It changed my life and musical taste forever, and i'm into rock and metal ever since that day this was 40 years ago.
Van Halen had that impact on me as well. For me, it was the song Pretty Woman. The way Eddie played changed everything for me. Thank you for sharing that as I completely understand. ♥️ Thank you and take care.

A lot of the rock in the 80s tried to emulate what Eddie was doing. He had that same impact that Jimi Hendrix had in the 60s. Very enjoyable video. You have great taste in music and a great ear for quality sound. I thought I had the best vinyl version of Van Halen I and II from 2009 but after watching this video, I went out and bought the 2015 versions, and I must say they sound much better, they Rock so dynamically rich and clean sounding. Thanks for the recommendation, now I can enjoy these two favorites of mine on a higher level 👍.

I may have to break down and pick up a new copy of VH :-) First time I heard this album was in 78 riding in a friend of a friends car, and after the first few notes it was "What the hell is this, and can you drive me to the record store please" Sadly it was in the evening and no record store in Cold Lake AB Canada :-) But I got it the next day. Also If I may, thanks for all your video's, I have been a subscriber for a while now, and you, along with the others have lead me to giving this You Tube thing (for lack of the proper term) a shot for myself, not a lot of content yet, but I am trying! I’ve often said that the first 6 VH records are actually part of my DNA by now as Ive played them so many times. Really looking forward to hearing it Saturday. Hoping we won’t be waiting for the rest of them to be unleashed.

Hi Melinda, I just recived my copy of Van Halen from Mobile Fidelity (1 Step) and I agree with your assessment 100%!. I played all my copies back to back, and track to track.I agree about the Hoffman Grey, and Bellman cuts being that the Bellman is a close second. I also have a random original pressing which is noisy but wonderful. The 1 Step beats them all especially the Hoffman Grey. The original was a close second but it is too noisy so the 1 Step is the winner buy a landslide because of the vinyl it is pressed on and because of the separation. This is one of the most important issues to ever be released because iof how it changed the world and the hearts and minds of people like me. To hear it so perfect is a (for me) a spiritual experience. The bass and Alex's drums have a place of prominence in this edition that exists no where else. I never heard Dave say "Eddie One More Time" before this issue. I hope the rest follow suit and for now until (hopefully) the distant future In Krieg I trust. Great video! I was 20 when the album was released and went to Discount Records to shop for new albums, the manager grabbed me by the arm and with a huge smile, he told me you are going to pick your jaw off the floor when you hear this album, because it is like nothing you have heard before. He was right! Great to hear that MoFi did a great job with the mastering. I don't have the disposable income that I had before I retired, but I do buy some of the lower cost reissues from time to time. I am going to splurge and and buy the MoFi release as a Christmas gift to myself!

I like Van Halen, but my love for a band like you have for Van Halen would be… Tom Petty. That being said, I will concede, the most fun I ever had at a concert was the Van Halen concerts in the mid 80s. Hands-down, the most fun ever. The girls were just crazy at those shows. Thanks Dave! The best show was one time on Alex‘s birthday. It’s just indescribable the fun they had. They called Alex to the front of the stage and I know he had no idea, they had a big cake and just splattered him with it. They killed it.

I'm not the Van Halen fan that you are, but I will purchase THIS Van Halen One Step. I still remember hearing album cuts when it was released....this was a different sound. Eddie introduced his very different guitar technique and tone to the masses, and I was blown away. Glad to hear MoFi did a good job with this one. After Digital-Gate, I'm seeing some One Steps being discounted because theyre not selling. I dont expect that to be an issue with this one. Thanks for your review.

I have pre ordered it here in the UK, so hopefully get it soon. I remember hearing Eruption for the first time and a friend’s brother said he would give me a tape of the album and when I got it from him me and my friend fast forwarded the tape to listen to Eruption but couldn’t find it. We then realised he had taped Women and Children First, which to this day is probably my favourite album along with their first. I received Van Halen first album for my Christmas 1980. Both sides had side 1 label on it so phoned my friend to get side 2 songs which I wrote on the inner sleeve. Brilliant memories 😊 P.S I never liked Sammy Hagar in Van Halen so stooped buying their albums after 1984.

Thanks for the review, just ordered one! 😀..btw, my first concert was Van Halen in February 1984 with DLR at the Charlotte Coliseum..I was 14 and it completely blew my mind..I've been to countless shows since then, but that one stands on its own..the coliseum was sold out (2 nights in a row!), and Dave had the whole crowd in his hands..those were the days..

Well, I turned 15 a few months later, born in '69, so maybe I'm a little bit older, but anyway, also wanted to say you have an impressive collection of different pressings of this album..the only other version I have is the Chris Bellman remaster, which sounds great, so I can't wait to hear the MoFi, super excited ! ❤️😊

I've got quite a few pressings but for me the 2009 is my favourite, so solid and 70s sounding, i do really live the Bellman cut but for me a little too bright compared to other cuts, might have to pick this up quite expensive where i live.

When I was 13, I was home alone and my 17-year-old brother burst into the house and said, "you gotta hear this"! It was of course, VH 1. It was a pivotal moment in my continuing love of music. Tbh, I don't care for the rest of their catalog, but this will always be my second favorite record of all time.

Killer review, Melinda 👌emotional & accurate! So finally it will come out after 2,5 years time waiting. My order is combined with another One Step (Miles Davis - Sketches of Spain), so I still need have to wait even a bit more longer😮. As a german dude, I need to combine the orders to save shipping costs. Eddie was also a very innovative & creative rhythm guitar player. But anyway what a band ! Every hard rock record after 1977 was influenced by this iconic debut.

Great video Melinda, too late to have my coffee with it but… 😂 I’m very interested to hear the sound of these VH one steps. Particularly 1984. I have a limited edition Quiex II press and the 2010 Chris Bellman cut and have also owned an OG and ALL of them have pretty extreme sibilance on the cymbals. I wanna see if the Mofi fixes that. As for VH 1, I’ll keep my Bellman cut. It sounds Amazing enough for me. And I wish Mofi would provide release dates for these VH one steps already! They’ve made us wait Long Enough! I was lucky to see Van Halen open for Ronnie Montrose (on his "Open Fire" tour March 1978) in New York City at The Palladium on 14th Street and I swear Eddie Van Halen's amplifier blew up during the finale "I'm On Fire" I never heard about Van Halen this was my intro and of course I went to the store after the show and bought the LP and it brings back those great memories! I always thought the original Warner Bros/George Marino/Sterling Sound pressing to be outstanding soundwise (it only runs 36 minutes) fat grooves on both sides but I have the MoFi on order so thanks for a superb emotional review!❤See you next week!
