I saw that unit on trade me. Thought about making a bid but forgot about it and went out for dinner. When I checked the price later, I was a bit horrified. Now I can watch you fix it! Good luck cheers Doug.
Counterfeit filter hood? It makes me cringe to see someone reach underneath a power supply PCB like that while removing it, knowing that you can get a very nasty shock from it if the capacitors haven't bled off.
OK I know this is a longshot but I’ll give it a try usually people don’t respond I’m trying to find out on the power supply what is Q7 I repaired the entire supply it works perfectly but I have no idea what Q7 is it looks like a small transistor but I have a feeling it might be something else it’s the only one on the board that is right next to The big caps
I'm only 13 minutes in but was this piece of kit right at the point where HP started using 3rd party power supplies and thus stopped giving out schematics?
tgsoapbox - yes that's right, it's a computer products brand... so no info at all! "Spoiler alert" I got another piece of gear recently (video awaiting upload) which was working and blew up on camera too ! Guess what, another computer products branded unit!
Just in case it helps someone, I did a repair of the PSU of an HP 8904A a while ago. My failure was in the vertical daughter board for which I made partial drawn up of the schematic whatever.sdfa3.org/hp8904a-multifunction-synthetizer-restoration.html

Doug V B - yeah I had a fight on my hands trying to get it !

Well funny! Gave me a sore belly laughing! Even showed the Mrs and she was chuckling too!
Thanks for sharing! :)
I know it's been 6 years, but I have the same unit, same problem. It's those RIFA Y capacitors (there are 3 of them)
For those searching the moment when the smoke was released, it's here 14:12 :-)
VoltLog thank you!
That cap blowed up really good.

Sorry, I don't have the unit anymore, and there are no circuit diagrams for the power supply either.

At 13:00 your multimeter are reading 5.8 volts weiiiiird
I love this smokey seconds, and yes this stinks allot ;-)
:))) funny as hell, for those silly squeeze pins in a tight spot a piece of brass tubing works nice, vs. pliers
+throttle bottle - nice tip, thanks for that.

David Douard - thanks, I actually found your repair info when I was researching the repair of this unit, it was helpful so thanks for sharing it.
