Ich just finished my first Screenplay. First Draft. You´re right with the mental breakdowns. Have the same. Now i finished it, and i want to began a new summary for a new idea, while will write on the secdond draft. Keep going, bro
I'm a pretty young kid, one who doesn't even know the first step of screenwriting. And I'm trying to write my first ever script for my film "Destiny" (sorry for the self promo) and every time I get a bit unmotivated, I rewatch this video and a few of your others. Your videos have really helped me understand how to build a story and characters. Ive just finished my first draft in just under 2 weeks. Thank you for making these videos and inspiring me and a whole lot of other young aspiring filmmakers. Edit (August 25, 2022): I wrote this comment two years ago and guess what... I'm still doing the same thing. This video is awesome.
That’s great! Also a beginner in screenwriting and I’ve been struggling to get first drafts done as well. Mostly because I get drained of any motivation or energy after three days.
Hello, I’d recommend the Screenwriter’s Bible, writing your character, premise (goal), conflict (problem) and resolution. Then finding a beat structure that works for you, and writing out one line scene descriptions within your beat structure outline. That final outline makes it easier to write for me. Good luck 👍🏾
I recommend reading Save the Cat and continuing to watch other creators. Story breakdowns of movies and shows are ridiculously helpful in creating your story and characters.
@@gorkemgulan Yeah but we all work different, some people get inspired by different things :) if you have the idea already it's great you can expand on it. If your mind's drawing a blank though. Well, let's just say "here's johnny".
It's always interesting to me how different writers can have such different processes. I spent so much of this video wondering why you'd skipped developing characters, then realized that you were just making an outline first. I've always done the outline after the characters, letting them dictate where it leads and hoping for some happy surprises along the way, but this also sometimes leads to overdeveloping someone who winds up being unimportant or underdeveloping someone I later realize needs more focus, so there's definitely arguments for both methods.
Yeah it’s interesting cause sometimes I plan my character’s arcs beforehand and sometimes I’m not sure and let the characters do their thing in the story I’ve planned. And sometimes they do their own thing and sometimes they go with it but generally in the end they’ll grow in a way that’s organic to the story I want to tell, and then I can go back and tighten it up in the further drafts. It’s the same with themes, I don’t always explicitly know 100% of what the story’s really about under the surface until it’s done, and then I can focus on that in my second and third drafts.
I would say though, that walking, in the fresh air, could be seen as the most productive form of procrastinating, since exercise and daylight can brighten up our mood, and invigorate us. I often go for a walk when I'm feeling stuck, or my back is aching. This video follows the sentiment of "Turning Pro" by Pressfield; an amateur waits for inspiration and the fear to subside, trapped in procrastination, while the "pro" mindset knows the fear won't subside and simply does it anyway, knowing the inspiration, or "flow state" comes after the artist has started working.
"If you hear a voice within that says you cannot paint, then by all means paint and that voice will be silenced." - Vincent VanGogh Same goes for writing.
I love how your video about writing a screenplay has a dark night of the soul about 3/4 of the way through, after which you remember your purpose and recommit to your story goal.
That moment.. THAT moment when you had it finished. When you just.. stopped, and could finally say that you have all of that behind you, that you made it. It brought me to tears, I felt it, I absolutely felt it, because I am a starting screenwriter who has a huge problem with always starting up a screenplay and then has a huge mind block mid way through.. I had many, MANY screenplays ending up like that. I had barely a few I really finished. And even tho I cannot say I am that great at it, I dare to say that ALL of them had potential. Some of them are already lost in time and data, some of them "put under desk", and now I am trying to revisit one of my older ones just to see if I can finish it. And with this vid it could be more possible than before. Wish me luck. And thank you greatly, you've won my sub.

Needed to watch this! Thank you! My favorite quote from one of my writing teachers, "You don't have to like your first draft, you just need to write it."
2 years ago, I once wrote a script in about a week. That was the first script I've ever finished. I never re-read it because it's SO bad and embarrassing...
TheADHX u should reread it, maybe u can improve it? I don’t know, but that’s really cool. I never seem to finish anything I always get new ideas and it’s so frustrating lol🙈
Thanks to this video I just completed my first draft EVER after a solid month of work. At times it was frustrating, but I'm really happy with the result. Thank you Tyler for helping me!
Dude, this is my 3rd time watching this video, I just read ur script! It's a awesome script! You've inspired me that I can do anything if I put my mind to it, well cuz when I'm older I really wanna be a movie writer
I just wanna say that this video has really inspired me. I like to write screenplays, but I take a long time. This has given me more confidence, and also has taught me not to worry about my first draft.
Me: I want to write something simple, contained, that doesn't require research. Also me: I'll write a sci-fi thriller set on a moonbase that involve scientific research and a military conflict between nations.
So the lesson to me is: No matter how long it takes to write your script, you will go through all of these steps. (1) Confidence in your idea, you map it all out (2) You fall in love with your idea through development (3) At some point while you are writing, you will begin to hate it. Overthink it. (4) This step is either where you decide this isn’t the story for you, give up or keep writing. Great video man!
Tyler! I usually don’t write comments online but I recently discovered your UA-cam channel, I have seen almost all of your videos. They have been very helpful and given me much knowledge of the craft, as you call it very “practical” guidance into screenwriting . In the past i have attended several different schools and well known courses, your videos have been very hands on. Thanks a bunch and keep up the good work!
Gaining that focus is something you really need in order to get sucked into writing. I’ve managed to get full episodes done for my series I’ve been writing.
I love that a a writer, he made a full story out of him writing a story. The video had a setup, a conflict, a climax(im not a writer so just think of more story terms haha) but it was a great video and I am now here to stay :)
This video helped me when I had to submit a draft for registration and I had less than 50 hrs..and I used studiobinder's story circle even on my earlier script and it helped me to diagnoise the problems in script...and my draft also helped me realise I know more about my characters and story than I actually thought...thank you brother for making this video😊
Tyler you're a genius! That's impressive. I wrote a war script based on a battle and real characters...oh my God! The research alone took me 6 months. I didn't know what I was jumping into. The character biographies alone was about 50 pages! Yikes. You've inspired me! I'm writing a thriller next! My goal? To write it in 48 hours, like you!
This must be fate, I have two days off with no plans. Dude I admire you so much, I don’t know how you do all this. Making videos isn’t easy, plus editing it all together. Then doing this challenge on top of it. I’m curious about your life man, are you a working writer? I feel like you should be with this much focus and drive. Oh and not to mention this entire online course you created! It’s inhuman!! I’d love to just pick your brain man - because I’m on the complete opposite end of the spectrum. Can’t focus, bad time management, tons of distractions (reddit) and all the while kicking myself as each month passes faster than the previous one. Anyways another great video as always brother. Take care!
I am not a working writer. I am writing and hoping to get something sold currently. Focus is more about removing distractions rather than it is having internal superhuman focus. Remove distractions from your writing space and be intentional about writing daily. That’s how you finish!
I recently started to script and narrate my videos more consciously (inspired by a lot of your videos actually), can't even imagine how much time "usually" would go into a full screenplay
John Hughes did that most weekends... Home Alone was like 1 of 2 screenplays he wrote over a weekend. Many screenwriters do just start from the first 5 pages till it's a movie, then keep writing the movie. Screenplays are at their core, 1 idea. Just need 1 idea worth writing a feature film about. Something to try also; John Hughes is not talked about enough though, it's insane he's dead.
This was so inspiring even as a designer. It's so easy to want to make the first go perfect, but it's so much better to actually have something done. Thanks, I learned something awesome here and I'm inspired by your mindset.
you've got me motivated. my semester's coming to a close soon, and i'm gonna get the first draft of my own screenplay done before classes start in mid-january
I just finished reading your script and I could vividly imagine it play out like a movie in my head. You are so talented! If this is your first draft, I'd love to see how much better a second or third draft could go omg
this came onto my recommended section and i honestly felt like crying, i needed this so so badly lmao there’s a half-baked story in my head and i have to get it out
I felt so called out when you started talking about continuously editing the first Act and I realized I had the same problem as you. This helped me calm my anxiety and panic attacks about not finishing my script and I'm actually making progress. thank you so much.
YES! I needed this, am 40 pages into my first draft of a script and thought it was stupid to think I could get it done by the end of the week. But now I know I can.
"I need to write something that requires no research - I know! How about a _multi-cultural _*_science fiction_* story!"... - Come on, you know it's funny. Honestly, given the limitations this guy put on himself, I'm surprised he didn't just accidentally rewrite the first "SAW" movie.
Okay, well. Its a right time to say this brother, this video pushed my self esteem on the chair and as I was never done it before, I took a half hour shortfilm to write in 24hrs challenge, i took it very seriously, that I didnt even get off chair for lunch and breakfast. My flatmate bff helped me to arrange it at the place. On the earlier day, I shook my bff's self esteem and challenged him to finish a 700 pages book along me in 24hrs. On first morning I started it at 10.30am and left the table at 1am. Not because I was feeling asleep but I finished the screenplay in first 14.5hrs. I was productive for whole 13hrs and used 1.5hrs for dinner and walk. Had a big smile. It felt great. Woke up at 7am on the next morning and sat on the chair at 9am. And repaired some scene for an hour. That was the end 24hrs, I bff finished the book at 11am. We had favorite food and celebrated the small victory. I found my mind is willing to take ghe major challenge. On the same day I sat on the table and started to work on a fresh feature film screenplay. I had this Idea previously on my mind but it was very weak. As I was very Confident at that time I decided to convert it into a strong one. Startes to take some points. Then I realised that wasnt enough so I tried to write 3acts in 1a, 1b with help of your another videos, even that wasnt enough so I wrote 60 one liners for each scene. It took me two days. I was productive for 9hrs on the first day, than 4 hrs, then 4, and 3. I was losing. So tried to repeat the challenge by challenging my another friend and it worked for me I was writing for 10hrs that day. Its a 15th day. I have with me, my first shortfilm (above 10 minutes) screenplay including 26 scenes on 24 pages, ready. Along with my first ever feature film first draft with 110 scenes on 96 pages ready. Its a long journey for me to turn it into the business but the experience I had was must for me and boosted me with a great confidence. Thank You Man Tyler. Pardon my grammar. It did the magic you may have imagined, while making this video. Have shared this video to others. And now, I am just thinking, "which idea should put my finger on and start off my next marathon ;-)"
This video is a gem! Mostly, we read about story theory and how to fight creative block, but following along someone as knowlegeable as you struggling and commenting on your struggle and thoughts opens up a new perspective. Writing is diffuclt for everyone and understanding how to deal with it on a personal and emotional level is paramount! Thanks for this video!
Interesting. This past week I jumped back into screenwriting. One thing I never realized before is how important it is to LOVE what you write. I technically wrote 3 shorts this week, but only loved 2 of them. It's good to finish what you start, but it's hard for me to commit to a project if i'm no longer in love with the story or characters. I don't want to completely give up on that other story. But i'm not sure how to proceed. Since i'm only writing short
You have not idea how much I enjoyed watch your video. I saw my self and some screenwriter fellows and the struggle that we had being through, sat on our desks during hours, days, months even years, but the feeling is priceless when you have a first draft to show of. I totally recommend as you just did, work on the idea, the structure of the acts, the characters, personalities, conflict, plots, twist, purpose, genre, etc, all this before wasting our time siting in front of our computers, ignorant and naiv about what we want to share with the audience.
It's the way he was so excited and enthusiastic on the 2nd day, but then the cursor just doesn't move. Literally so relatable that it's hilarious. And the voice over just sounds so stressed i had to laugh.
We all think this is like a cool UA-cam challenge when John Hughes would literally write a full script in one weekend. Some scripts include the breakfast club and home alone
Seeing your process and hearing the rationale behind them was illuminating and encouraging, especially the importance of not allowing yourself to be distracted or overwhelmed or so discouraged with the quality/perfection instead of just getting to work. Appreciate seeing the way you overcame some of the typical challenges and to see how you produced
Every time I feel stuck in my writing, I come back to this video to remind myself it’s possible to get a first draft completed in a short amount of time
Omg you're my spirit animal, thank you so much for this video! And just a penny for my thoughts, but you're a gifted writer, will I see your name on the silver screen one day? If that's one of your goals, then I'll be here supporting you! Thank you again for this video 😊
Great video! I love seeing how other writers tap into their mood, I'm mostly an "improviser" -- like Tarantino or King, I don't like to plan too far ahead as you need to bond and connect with the characters, which might change how thought it may have ended. But I understand that you're under a severe time constraint!
I cannot thank you enough for this. When you said about the walk, I felt that. This little piece of a video is a great example, that every artist strugles and it is not unique experience. It's not to me, it's not to other writers. It is an universal thing, we all need to overcome and not get swallowed.
Kevin Williamson wrote the original Scream, on top of two five-page treatments for Scream 2 and 3, over the course of three days. And that's basically the script that was shot (except an added murder). So it's absolutely possible. Great video. I've decided to give this challenge a shot next weekend.
Even though you said it had flaws, I read the entire thing and its awesome 🖤. Its a movie I would definitely watch if it were made into one. Great job! This inspired me to finish writing my book

Story breakdowns of movies and shows are ridiculously helpful in creating your story and characters.

as someone struggling to finish a script and starting to hate and question all of it, I REALLY needed this video.
Glad to hear it!
Yea there are definitely worse ways to procrastinate
If I went for a walk while procrastinating, my script would never get done...because I would freeze to death.

Man really just speedran writing a screenplay's first draft, frickin impressive.
This came out at the perfect time I’m embarking on a new script now!

enough of this hands down thing....
Me: I want to write something simple, contained, that doesn't require research.
Also me: I'll write a sci-fi thriller set on a moonbase that involve scientific research and a military conflict between nations.
Hahaha. Oops
This is such a good way to knock out a first draft. I just finished 90 pages in 48 hours. I’ll definitely be doing this again.

People still talk about _The Breakfast Club_ and _Ferris Bueller's Day Off_, so he had to have done something right.
....and Home Alone 2 was Just Him cutting and pasting The Original Film's Final Draft and making Edits here and There.
Home Alone 3 was probably done in 10 minutes then
I wonder if you or anyone else realized that you could make a story circle with this process LOLOL You are a story teller down to your being!

Whats your story about?
Tyler I’m so proud of you! I think I will write my feature draft in two days next week!!
The key to all scripts is a solid outline. Vomit draft comes afterward, then polish, polish, polish.

But I understand that you're under a severe time constraint!
Yea my process is definitely different when I have more time!
I cannot thank you enough for this. When you said about the walk, I felt that. This little piece of a video is a great example, that every artist strugles and it is not unique experience. It's not to me, it's not to other writers. It is an universal thing, we all need to overcome and not get swallowed.
