I REALLY hope they don’t move to live service. I know the argument is that it could be “purely cosmetic” but I feel like the cosmetics are so integral to splatoon as a series, and paywalling the best ones would kind of kill the series for me.

Imo cosmetics used to be integral part of every videogame, but game publishers got so greedy that they turned every multiplayer game into f2p model with barely any content.

If we were to get a live service Splatoon, I don’t want it to be Splatoon 4. We should at least have an option between the two.
Except that would probably be hell upon development having to make 2 separate versions of the same game solely to justify separate monetization.

Please for the love of cod I do NOT want any monetisation outside of single player DLC. I don’t want a shop to buy even skins in. Just let me pay the 60€ upfront and don’t charge me for shit after. I quite enjoy the idea of paying for a full game that gets updated over skins that I have to pay or gamble for. One thing about the stage builder that wasn’t mentioned: player-made stages could really breathe some life into the single-player experience. Most of the time, single player content doesn’t really stay in the limelight outside the month or so after release. But giving players the Mario Maker package and the ability to make speedrunning and platforming challenges would be a huge draw for those not super interested in the PvP aspect of the game.

Saying splatoon would be better as a live service game is probably the worst take I've heard about splatoon, and that's saying a *LOT*. It's emblematic of the notion that games need to keep having 'more' and 'new' and be these infinite content machines. Let games be done, it's not a 'content drought', it's called a game being finished. Suggesting microtransactions for a game that already costs full AAA price only serves to entice addiction and generate FOMO to keep people hooked, and that's not hyperbole, that's factual, there have been dozens of studies dedicated to it, heck, watch and James Stephanie Sterling video on the games industry, they've been saying the same thing since *BEFORE* the 'live service' model became the cash cow to beat money out of. It's fun to theory craft, but some ideas are just straight up harmful.

If the s4 maps have good flanks, I'd love to see a capture the flag type gamemode that's like the reverse of rainmaker, you're trying to get into the enemy base and then take something to mid. Probably not just one 'flag' though, somewhere between clams and rain, maybe you pick up one of four sprinklers of doom so you have some passive paint around you but you have rainmaker speed and are easily visible, but you still have your main and sub weapon.
I also think it could give an interesting dynamic where if you die with it or it stays on the ground for like 5 seconds it resets, but you can throw it to teammates so there's a sorta soccer-like 'passing' system. There could even be a penalty for attempting to get a flag to mid without succeeding, like you get a 5 point handicap every time and then you score 10 points each time you get one to mid or something

    • @frozenflame1723

I like the idea of more game modes that allow multiple teams to score points/contribute to the objective simultaneously. (Especially if there were more than 2 teams)! I had a similar idea of reworking rainmaker where each team gets their own version of the rainmaker in spawn that only they can pick up. The goal is still to carry it to the enemy base, (though probably not as far in to compensate for extra distance).
Like usual, these rainmakers regenerate with a shield if the holder is defeated. Anyone can go for the pop, but only players of the team that previously possessed it can actually re-grab it. That means camping the rainmaker no longer ruins the game, since it'll just reset back on the attacker's side after some time. I think this would play like the opposite of your idea, which sounds cool from a gameplay standpoint!

For me the main argument against going the live service route is that it's actually a much more risky strategy than most people seem to be assuming, especially now since the market is so saturated. There have been *a lot* of live service games that have failed or are in the process of failing. Anthem, Suicide Squad, Marvel's Avengers, Foanstars, Babylon's Fall, Exoprimal and dozens of other ones most of us have never even heard of. Live service is basically a gamble that if a developer creates a large enough library of content (which is all a fixed cost to them) then they can attract enough of an audience (and specifically enough players willing to pay for stuff) that it at least covers their costs. And a lot of the time it doesn't. I mean even Destiny, which was really successful for a long time, has had multiple large rounds of layoffs recently.
Which leads to another thing. There have been a ton of layoffs in the games industry in the past two years or so. While Nintendo hasn't had been completely immune (they did lay off a number of games testers earlier this year), they haven't had anything like the blood bath we've seen from other studios and publishers. I kind of think that this is at least partially due to the fact that instead of making big bets with the hope of getting as large an audience as possible, they mostly have focused on making really good games and selling them the traditional way. And it's worth noting that this model is probably healthier for the devs themselves. I know it sucks for Splatoon and Animal Crossing fans but the people working on these games are almost certainly better off being able to switch between a different series in a completely separate genre every few years (also real talk, if Nintendo was going to pursue live service then Animal Crossing would be a much better candidate than Splatoon).

Imo, TableTurf needs the biggest amount of new content.
I’d like a catalog-like thing for TableTurf. It doesn’t change per season, but it’s always the same.
After you reach a certain level in TableTurf, it takes an insane amount of XP to level up. So, add a separate meter that always costs the same amount of points, let’s say 500. You get rewards for this to help you level up with the 'standard' levels.
The rewards you get from this are things like cards you’re missing, those card bits that’s low you to shoes which card you get, and other stuff like cash.

If they do make a stage builder they should make a toggle on whether the map is symmetrical or not. That way we can have traditional and old-style maps that are easier to balance and make since you only have one side to design while the level design pros can be more experimental. We can also have an option for horizontal symmetry but how the game can handle stitching stages together with the inevitability limited processing power is going to be a unique scenario.

I think the problems with maps and specials could easily be solved without it by including less/better designed defensive specials and making maps more like Splatoon 1. As a hardcore Masters Overwatch player I know how incredibly brutal and divisive format shifts can be on a community and how many things they require changing. It basically makes the game play like a whole different subgenre that feels very different. I have loved how Splatoon has felt/played since the first testfire in Splatoon 1 and I don't want to lose that

One thing I really want them to include, and even implement in prior games is an offline player vs CPU version, where players can choose the mode, map, and difficulty of the CPU characters.
There's some maps from 2 I sorely miss, and since no one really plays 2 anymore, those days of playing on the reef for example aren't coming back. Then sometimes when I come back from work and have a little bit of time to myself it's really frustrating when the current maps on rotation in 3 are ones I'm not keen on and I have to either play on it and not having the best of time or just pray the next time I have a bit of spare time it's maps I enjoy.
If it had offline play I could return to the maps of 2 I miss, and if 3's current rotation were ones I weren't keen on I can just select whichever map I'd prefer.

It also lifts alot of pressure off the devs for designing every map themselves! Mabye each update could be 1-2 maps made by devs and a third that was made in stage builder but obviously the devs sould review it and make slight changes where needed as long as they're not to drastic.

Since others are talking about the problems with live service (even 'done well', it's still targeting vulnerable people in pretty exploitative ways would be my brief addition to that), I'm going to instead talk about the Stage builder idea - It's a cool idea but would require the pool system to be better integrated to really work and has a danger of driving people away from the matchmaking system. Stage builders in shooters used to be a thing (Though typically not fully integrated into the game, more 'the devs would give you a map editor tool external to the game'), but I don't think have been one more recently (I think the shift was when matchmaking became the standard rather than "Here's a list of rooms would you like to join one or create one" being how people found casual matches), in more recent years it's games with heavy emphasis on local multiplayer and single player that have typically gone the stage builder route. And I'm pretty neutral on the rest.

I have to give a hard disagree to the microtransactions. As someone who came from Fortnite, I tried to get into other shooters when I was done with it. I just got sick of microtransactions and the community they seem to build with them. Splatoon 3 felt way less toxic of a community, and I think part of that is that there's no microtransactions. Just a $60 game + $25 DLC + $19.99 online service for each of the two years. That's way less than I spent during 6 months of playing Fortnite. Also, when Splatoon 5 inevitably rolls around, are we supposed to say goodbye to all our paid content? A new game, let's it be a soft overhaul of the previous game. New weapon classes, new idols, new main weapons, new story modes, and new specials. I'd rather just have my favorite parts exist in a previous game than just get taken out or vaulted.

To be fair it would be the first big Nintendo's official 3D editor and that's a big ask. Will it be too limited? As they are Nintendo they would have to make it relatively easy to use, which is tough for a 3D editor. These “rounds” would likely be a minute long, with time-outs going to the team with the most Kills.

    1. Male Idols(Inklings or Octolings) I had thought of a 4 character boy idol team, this could also make some interesting splatfests too, some ideas could be
Splatfest 1: Four Seasons(Summer, Winter, Spring, Fall)
Splatfest 2: Card symbols(Diamond, Spade, Heart, Clover)
Splatfest 3: Elements(Earth, Fire, Wind, Water)

Splatfest 5: Sports(Soccer, Baseball, Basketball, Football)
Splatfest 6: Colors(Red, Blue, Yellow, Green)
Splatfest 7: Emotions(Happy, Sad, Anger, Fear)
I know some of these aren't perfect but it's ideas
    2. Crossover gear, imagine having marios cap as an equip able hat, or using bowser Jr's ink brush as it's own weapon, or Links tunic as a "shirt" and uh...Yoshi's equip able shoes?
    3. Following up #2 I think bowser Jr's inkbrush would be an interesting weapon, I figured it's "special" ability could be "sabotage" where you use the brush to cover the enemy opponents screen partially in your ink color to hinder their vision to a degree for a few seconds, could be used to gain an advantage and it doesn't feel too overwhelmingly broken(that I think) with the sub weapon being able to make weak polluted piranhas that spray ink of your color to nearby enemies when they get close, it's relatively weak and can die pretty easily but it's like a little turret
    4. New stats for gear
    1. Jump Height(Allows player to jump higher, naturally...applies to kid form and squid form, may help jumping over a few obstacles, or whatnot...not the most useful I'll admit)
    2. Second Wind(Exclusive to the shirt gear, allows the player a one time use per match ability to respawn in the same location as where they were previously splatted, it's only one time use per GAME so use it only when you believe it would benefit the team and don't waste it)
    3. Sneaky Special(Exclusive to the hat, hides whenever an enemy uses a special attack, so it doesn't reveal to the enemy that you're using it)
    4. Saving grace(Exclusive to the shoes, when inkling has taken 50% of their health in damage, increases swim speed, increases defense up, increases run speed, hopefully so they can make a quick getaway to avoid being splatted)
