    How in the hell Connors wrestled back control of this match, down 4-5 and at a set point for Lendl is incredible. The guy is in physical pain (foot) and is sick (stomach) and just hangs in and guts those games out , hitting some amazing winners right in the corners with all that pressure. As Tony Trabert commented, "That game has a lot of heart".

      It can't be forgotten that Lendl was famously the biggest choker in tennis at the time. He lost all his early big matches, often blowing leads in key matches too, sometimes even losing to people he was really supposed to beat like Noah at the French, baby Wilander at the French, or Wilander on grass at the Australian, etc.. He was basically the male Jana Novotna until 84 or 85 anyway. So that plays a huge role too, but it still was an incredible effort by Connors.

      Lendl was a little bit of a choke early in his career, and... Connors was always a dick.

    Connors is surely among the Top Ten "All-Time New York" pro athletes. The older he got, especially, the more he worked the NY crowd to his advantage. (Which is OK, it's gamesmanship.) A lesser player would've just gone easily into the night vs. Krickstein in 1991. If it were measurable, Connors "wore the U.S. colors" far better against the European titans such as Borg and Lendl than did, say, McEnroe. Junior, IMO, rarely if ever gave a rip about having the crowd on his side. About the only time I remember McEnroe really feeding off the crowd was the 1982 Davis Cup match against Wilander in St. Louis.

    Of all the big points, and chokes from Lendl, that happened prior to 38:45....this was the deciding point in the match. In my opinion.

      @MUFC Who gives a shit?
      Soccer is an ugly sport compared to tennis; soccer fans are uncivilized violent drunken assholes and soccer is boring as hell to watch for any longer than 2 minutes. Enjoy your soccer with the rest of the slovenly deadbeats of the world. I'll be long dead by 2100 A.D. so I guess I'll never know if what you say is true.

    Lendl connaît une grande défaillance physique sur la fin du 3 iem set ,il semble alors très amaigri, avoir perdu plusieurs kilos par rapport au début du match ...cela se produira aussi dans sa finale perdu contre Wilander à Roland Garros 85 ...

    Lendl a clairement peur de gagner sur la balle de 2 sets à 1 en sa faveur. Il est remarquable de voir comment Connors, toujours prêt à boxer la balle, en profite pour faire basculer le match. Le tchèque finit le match avec une attitude statique et attentiste, fréquente chez lui au début des 80' lorsqu'il ne maîtrisait plus la situation. L'autre exemple célèbre reste sa défaite face à Chang à Roland-Garros en 89'.

      He wouldn't get passed everytime, he hit the ball so flat, it came in very low and fast, the perfect ball to charge in. He was past his tennis prime here but was still incredible. 109 singles title wins. Connors is no. 1 , Federer is no. 2 with 103 . If connors could have found a larger size racket much sooner, he definitely could have won more in his tennis twilight.

    Connors won the match in that 3d set - that was such a mentally difficult set with so much pressure. Lendl is up 5-3 serving and had a set point which Connors saves, then breaks his serve and reels off 4 straight games to win the set. Lendl knew at that point that he was just not good enough, mentally, to beat Jimmy Connors. And this is a good 5 years past the end of Connors' prime and Lendl is 23 years old. Amazing. The 4th set was an embarrassment - Lendl simply gave up. The lack of effort threw Connors off a few times, but he played through it and wiped the court with fuckhead to win his 5th Open. What did Lendl say for himself after this match ?

    • @aaronclareyloveshr6918
      @aaronclareyloveshr6918 4 роки тому +2

      @tennsmoothie.... ''Lendl is up 5-3 serving and had a set point which Connors saves''
      ... It wasn't 5-3 that Lendl served for the 3rd set... It was 5-4.That error was also made by Tony Trabert @42:46 as well... and Connors didn't 'save it'.It was a pitiful double fault from Lendl into the net that blew his chances.For Lendl to
      lose the next 10 games was absolutely disgraceful against a limping Connors who also had diarrhea was nothing short of pathetic.He simply gave up in the 4th set.

    At least from my point of view, there were so many fixed-calls favored to Connors contained in the match including the Connors' last forehand return at the match point. Still, fixed-calls were fewer than the previous year (in 1982) though. The U.S Tennis Association knows how to organize/create/manipulate the American Tennis Champion.
