Roger was poised to be one of the greatest bassists in all metal...who’s to say he wasn’t already. What a great player. His influence is incalculable....
I’ve loved Atheist for 30 years. Unquestionable Presence is an amazing album. As sad as I may feel watching Roger play, his ability doesn’t half make me laugh. Unreal. What a supremely talented guy.
Wrap your mind around this, Roger Patterson wrote all this stuff BEFORE HE DIED at age 22. I've read that some lines had to ommitted or replaced by Tony because he couldn't play them. The GREATEST to ever do it and THE GREATEST rhythm section ever in death metal head, shoulders, legs and a fuxking mountain above everyone else. Music is subjective, but this is a fact. Steve Flynn and Roger Patterson gave us one of the pinnacles of death metal. Seriously a whole album written around the rhythm section without any gimmicks and everyone absolutely skilled at their instrument.
Might not exactly have been because Tony couldn't play them... even back then Tony seemed to be a total monster on bass... but... the fact that usually in a band a bassist takes care of the basslines... and if he suddenly dies , what are the chances Roger would have left behind notes/tabs or anything? he obviously just knew 'em all by heart... I don't think they extensively demo'd U.P. and of course they wouldn't have had any of THESE youtube videos we are watching for Tony to have studied back in the day, so, makes you wonder... how DID they manage to have Tony play atleast 80% of what Roger played which as it is contained all kinds of fills at distinct stops of songs not just underneath riffs... perhaps Kelly and the others in the band were able to have grasped what Roger played having rehearsed so many times? Unless Roger left cassette tape type recordings of his basslines for study/studio/etc
Yeah I think Rand's playing style (low strings on the bottom) further enhanced their creativity. I knew these guys in Sarasota, also went to Jr high school (remember those?) just blocks from where this show was performed
my opinion, other than the superb playing most bands back then didn't mess with gear that kills the sound. today's gear is s**t, lacks harmonics and many musical elements. Back then the analog stuff allowed them to play clear even in 300 bpm tempos. This is common in all Sadus, Morbid Angel, Death etc early lives.
This sounds futuristic even by today's standards. Also, I keep forgetting Kelly also plays guitar. Since the reformation in 06ish, he's been just the vocalist. Crazy talented dude. Played amazing when I saw them in Berkeley end of 19. Last show I saw before the pandemic.
Alexander Patterson You're uncle was a natural born musician. He was on par with Cliff Burton (Metallica) in my opinion. They both honed skill in their instruments. RIP
Roger Patterson was the sickest bassist of all time PERIOD.
Roger was poised to be one of the greatest bassists in all metal...who’s to say he wasn’t already. What a great player. His influence is incalculable....
he IS one of the greatest bassists in metal! and I think any great metal bassist alive today would agree.
Dude one album like this at age 22. He is one of the greatest and without a doubt the best bassist ever in death metal.
its a fucking nazi

Music isn't subjective, musical taste/preference is :p ..Roger remains one of the greatest musicians ever whether widely acknowledged or not! 💗

My God look at Rogers fingers. Fucking incredible… Why isn’t that guy regularly mentioned as one of the best bass players of all time
Cause he died so young. I mean others did too but he only had the one album
Because atheist was so obscure at the time, people just didn't get it and they didn't get the recognition they deserved, especially Roger.
What a bass tour de force! Patterson was one of the great talents, so fucking sad he died so early. Amazing performance, unbelievable blast.
Patterson,. so talented guy RIP...
Damn. What a Gem if a video. Cool to see Roger playing the stuff off Unquestionable
Bloody amazing!!! Still benchmark material after all these years!
i was at this show i was tripping on Roger Patterson when they were playing it looked like he had an ibanez sr800 shit he was bad ass!
Can't believe that Roger would be dead 3 days after this show. Such an absolute shame as the metal world had a legend stolen.
This is some amazing footage with Roger
That's my uncle
@@alexanderpatterson1538 He is a legend in the metal world, in case you didn't know.
...you know when you have 2 left handed guitarists you are beyond amazing....all hail Paterson!!!!! Bring back Rand!!!!!!
One of which plays upside down strings (Rand Burkey).
Yeah I think Rand's playing style (low strings on the bottom) further enhanced their creativity. I knew these guys in Sarasota, also went to Jr high school (remember those?) just blocks from where this show was performed
Roger. No more words to add.
I am amazed at the sound quality, also the performence quality-- almost the same as their album!

Legends! What a stellar performance!
My uncle was the base player

This is awesome, thank you very much for sharing! My favourite song of yours. It's cool that you decided to include this in your reissues.
Roger was the Shit period! Talking to him was like being at the Foot of the Master!!
If you thumb down ATHEIST. You have intercourse with chickens. It's just that simple. Stupidity and depravity are no excuse for bad taste. ⛧🤘
KILLER!!!
Fuck san pedro had bad ass shows back in the days!
Love it, thank you guys for sharing !!
About time for a new Atheist album Kelly! Pull the guys together and do it at Mana, man. I beg you.
