- Andre De La Varre is the ‘Screen Traveler’ (:08) and this film will take viewers on tour through Cebu. This is the oldest island in the Philippines (:21). In 1519, the great explorer Magellan had sailed from Spain in an attempt to make it around the world (:51). In March of 1521 he fell upon the 7,000 islands that make up the Philippines (1:08). While he was killed at the neighboring island of Mactan, his crew completed the trip (1:41) and later Miguel Lopez de Legazpi (1:56) used Magellan’s previously travelled lines and established Spanish rule (1:56). This rule extended until after the Spanish American war. On the docks of Cebu which had already been an important trade center, ships are loaded with sacks of copra (2:40). Large rolled heaps of manila hemp can be seen as they are another major export (3:25). A picturesque shot of the city built on the shore is shown (3:55). The church of St. Augustine is one of the many historic churches located on the island (6:21). The effect of Spanish rule can be visualized in the Cathedral (6:34). The street previously known as the parish street (many families here had at least one son in the priesthood) is depicted (6:53). Following is the Fort San Pedro founded by the Gaspee in 1565 and is on site of the first settlement (7:29). The short film draws to a close with the American flag flying over the Philippine (8:01) and this has been a Screen Traveler Picture (8:30).

I'd love to be able to time travel (with current US $) and see the Phillipines as they were before WWII. I understand that old Manila was beautiful.
you are absolutely correct....Manila was once a progressive and beautiful country but because of the crazy WW II invented by Americans and Japanese, all the beautiful things, all around the Philippines were nothing but shambles!

The frame of the "Hotel" shown from about 3:06 - 3:16 is still there, though of course it is no longer a hotel. The Magellan's Cross building looks almost exactly the same as it does now.
The building is currently abandoned prior to 2022
Was it this building by the SRP?

PARIAN street or PRIEST street, sure ni?
PARIAN in spanish is like MARKETPLACE.... the Parian is where business-people live or the Filipino-Chinese or the Mestizos. In the today's PARIAN, you can still some of the ancestral houses of the rich....
Literally, a pari is Cebuano/Bisaya for Priest hence the name Parian. This was the time of American occupation, so their reference is not Spanish.
Abaca like banana tree
Nganong way " L " ang p'ung nga cebuano ? ... lahi sa uban nga binisaya .

When all you think about is weed. Your mind flies.
It’s Abaca
Manila hemp is another name for Abaca.
@@TSBye-qo1vc it is really called ABACA. There's no such word as manila hemp. They only invented it.
