I think the punishment for desertion is keel hauling. Got lots of words, something tells me you've said them all by now. Your attitude is good, keep going! Thanks for taking me along! Fair winds....

Just a guess on my part but I think that there are different expectations for crew for different types of trips. This was the first passage for you on your yacht and with that comes an additional set of issues; both the crew and you two might not have know what this entailed. Additionally, have you had a lot of prior experience being a captain with crew and the ins and outs of delegating etc.? Lastly, It’s difficult enough to spend 3 days with close friends in a confined space let alone people that are not.

Thank you. We were all drinking from a firehose, especially us as it's our (new) home. I think you make a good point about crew expectations vs friends, which can be a unique set of challenges. In hindsight, crew with more (passage) experience would have been better.

I have to ask. Why did your crew leave the ship? Why did they say they left the ship? Did Balance have a hand over process when you picked the boat up? Were you happy with it despite the issues you didn't find until the crossing?

No clue why our crew left other than, “This isn’t what we expected.”
There is a handover process, but we feel it was rushed because of the pending Christmas/ New Year holiday closures. We’re still happy with the boat, but feel the handover process could have been better.
We did a few shakeout sails before we left, but expected to have other issues surface.

@@GTFOplan Thanks for the videos. Compared to other models, there aren't that many Balance Catamarans out there and it helps a lot to see them in the wild.

Perhaps your attitude towards the portrayal of your crew in this video gives a hint at why they left. There's clearly more to that story that you're not telling. It can't be the case that you "have no clue" why they left. If it wasn't what they expected, what did they expect? Was it a question of feeling the boat was unsafe because it wasn't properly checked and trialled before the passage, or was it to do with how they were treated and/or clashing personalities? This video feels unfair to me: an abuse of the power that comes with having a (albeit small) platform. Calling people shitty without a right of reply isn't cool. And neither is letting a boat go to sea without locking nuts on the steering shaft.

We had done several shakeouts ahead of time, but there's always something that pops us. You kick yourself for not checking things (i.e. - locking nuts), but it's always that one thing you didn't check that causes the issue.
From the time we anchored and they said they were done, they were off the boat and on their own within the hour. No other conversations since then (just over two months ago) and no clue what their expectations were.
But thank you for your observations, Always good to look at things from a different perspective.

Well, to be clear, I think the steering shaft is really Balance's responsibility (unless there's more missing information). That's a QA shocker redolent of the British car industry in the 1970s!
On the other hand, if the crew left within the hour and you genuinely don't know why, I'd suggest that's a whole other leadership / self-awareness issue.
Not that there's any reason why my views should carry any weight, but I commented because I'd potentially like to keep watching and this episode really didn't sit right.

Thank you again for your comments. We’d love for you to keep watching! I think our expectations of the crew were clear before departure (and during the passage). Leadership/ self awareness, maybe, but without feedback from them (whom we’ve know for years), it’s hard to say. We would have welcomed the opportunity for honest feedback from our crew but they weren’t willing to share. Anyway, we’ve moved on, learned some lessons, and hopefully they have as well.
But yeah, totally a Balance issue for fixing the steering assembly, which, they’ve fixed since we left on our passage!

Some people just can’t handle it. The ocean is a scary place.
