I was on my motorcycle the first time I went over this span. Being so free, open and so close to the water was surreal.

@lexx41 That's right. This was part of the much larger Long Island Park System that was drawn up by RM at the same time as the NYC highway and parkway network. It's amazing to consider the huge scale of these plans collectively and the impact that they have had in the years since they were built...

Last time I visited I was a toddler back in the early 80's, watching this is surreal.

I grew up on Long Island and as a kid in the 1970’s and 80’s Jones Beach and Point Lookout were the beaches my family went to. Then in the 1990’s I discovered Robert Moses. It had a very cool nude beach ( I think it’s closed now) which was connected to Fire Island. I used to drive from Nassau County to Robert Moses field 5 or 6 and went over this Bridge many times. It is a beautiful bridge. Brought me back to memories of going to Robert Moses beach in the 1990’s. Thanks for posting.

Long Island is a place I yearn for as I moved to the Carolina’s over 13 years ago as have many LI many transplants. I miss it dearly but when I spect some time there for a few months a few years back I got sick of it and wanted to get out. You miss Long Island when you move away but want to escape it when living there.

@John Duffy III. When I was much younger Captree was one of my Dad's favorite fishing spots. My Grandmother lived in Lindenhurst. You probably remember when the Moses Causeway had a toll booth just before the water, the guardrails were wooden and the road signs were in black as opposed to green. It was the same way on most of the LI parkways. I miss those days.

I remember that too Frank. My aunt, uncle and cousins lived in West Islip, and the signposts to Captree and Robert Moses had the black and wood signposts. Southern State Parkway too, and toll booths in the sixties.

@lexx41 That's an interesting and great point that I never though about myself; I spend a lot of time in the Buffalo area so I'm very familiar with the Grand Island Bridges...

I haven't ridden on that bridge since 1969, when my aunt and uncle lived in Farmingdale.

I drove on that road more times than I can remember. I had to 4x4 on the beach to make repairs at various pump houses. No fun over there whan you have to work year round in all kinds of weather.

I did 112 MPH on Ocean Pkwy in my rusty green 1972 Nova in 12th grade 1990. The speedometer went to 140 but the car wouldn't.

So, did you go to the beach, lol? My parents watched the Fire Island Inlet Bridge being built back in the 60's, and they remembered when there was just the older, two lane bridge across Great South Bay. Nice to watch on a January day while I'm longing for summer.
