Oh, I know, Jodorowsky certainly isn't for everyone! :) He can be very annoying xD I like Camelia Elias's approach a lot! I also have the Untold Tarot, but haven't finished it.
Thanks for this video! I've always loved the way Jodorowsky thinks - he has an incredible ability to step outside of any given system and view it as a whole. I've read many of his books but have only recently gotten around to reading The Way of Tarot. His journey through the the Tarot de Marseille continues to blow my mind, and this video was very helpful with deciding what to read next :-)
I have several of these books, and I really appreciate you putting them in a reading order!!! I have put off learning TdM because of learning pips with no additional artwork to help me remember/latch on to... but I look forward to driving into that. I also have s few historic decks with pips so I know this will be part of my journey, and I look forward to using playing cards as pips to read as well. You’re engaging and your clarity of thought is easy to follow. Thank you also for the channel recommendations! Best wishes.
I received a TdM deck from my Oma that was published in 1983, I treasure it. I've been wanting resources that are more specific to that deck, it's confusing and awkward trying to transfer ideas from RWS based decks into TdM haha. Thank you!
This is really helpful, I came to tarot via the Ancient Italian Tarot, and couldn't get on with RWS, then the lovely Kelly at Truth in Story spoke on reading Marseille and it clicked, this was what I wanted from Tarot, so I went right back to the beginning and have just purchased these books, Im now working through your videos, I hope there is a lot more on Marseille as it is for me the beginning of Tarot before everyone put their spin on it. thanks again Gx

Curious what you think about "Untold Tarot: The Lost Art of Reading Ancient Tarot" by Caitlín Matthews if you've seen it? Thanks for your videos, very helpful.
This book wasn't yet out when I was making this video, but I own it now and I think it's beautiful and well researched. However, to be honest, I've never finished reading it 😅 There's something about Caitlín Matthews's books that just prevents me from finishing them! But that's an individual thing, many people enjoy this book, I think it's worth recommending ❤️
@@wolfofcoins Thank you for your reply and opinion. That's pretty much what I've heard from most of the other Tarot UA-camrs - that she is very opinionated and that can be off-putting. I think I'll skip on it for now and get some your other recommendations. Thanks again!
Personally, I love Untold Tarot-it has lots of examples and is more practical and down to earth than many of the big text-heavy tomes that get more into the esoteric weeds. Both approaches are valid-it really depends on your personal preference. Her writing style is literary and very British, which may be why some people find her difficult to read, but if you can get past that, what she teaches is actually very simple and useful and she goes into depth on how to approach the pips.

I'd like to get it in print, because the kindle is black & white - LOL. I'm pleased that they will be reprinting Yoav Ben Dov's deck again and hope they do a good job. I found it funny that you kind of mixed Jodorowsky and Crowley in your brain because I've seen some of Jodorowsky's movies and they are certainly "way way way out there" - tho not like Crowley. Watching people older than me, with much experience is always wonderful, it makes me feel like a student. Thank you for your work in previewing these guides. I'm still on my way reading my second book on tarot (plus much more things) by Robert M. Place, just finished the fourth chapter and my head gained a lot of weight. Would you suggest good books for Raider-Waite Smith for a beginner who's reading through Place's guide on Waite and is kind of familiar a little bit with it's symbloism? Side note: Alchemy symbolism led me to Tarot, hence why I got interest in the Alchemical Tarot by Mr. Place.
Hi! Actually I haven't read Robert Place's books, so I cannot tell. The advice I would give myself from 12 years ago would be: don't worry too much about the symbolism and arcane knowledge, tarot can actually be very pragmatic and down to earth :) There is of course a lot of fascinating symbolism in the tarot, but sometimes what we need is a straightforward approach which will help us make changes in our everyday lives. But that's only my point of view :) I know I sometimes got overwhelmed by the multifasceted symbolism, Kabbalah, astrology and many other things attatched by some writers to tarot. For me this is too much and actually prevents us from going deeper into tarot itself. If you are a beginner and would like to learn how to read RWS, I think that books by Joan Bunning or Barbara Moore will be easy to follow. If you want to learn about the symbolism, I guess Arthur Waite's book will be the best.
@@wolfofcoins Thank you for giving a full answer, I literally have no more questions, what I had already been answered in your reply. I'll look at Joan Bunning and Moore then, your approach is kind of new to me, due to Place being the first teacher I read about regarding Tarot.
I'd suggest you to look into Place's Book titled: The Tarot, Magic, Alchemy, Hermeticism, & Neoplatonism. over 600 pages, was extremely readable for someone who's basic in English and always suffer reading in English written books. Like the book title says, he'll go through tarot and the mentioned topics history, starting with the pre-historic shamanism, to ancient egypt; Osiris, Serapis, Toth, Mesopotimia, the Semitic invasion, Abraham the prophet of the three faiths to Solomon and his story with Ashmedai the demon who tricked the wise king, Christianity, Islam. As of now (in chapter 5) as a beginner the book is very digestible, to a knowledgeable people such as you it'll be much easier. :D
@@perfectheretic Thank you! There was a time when I was very interested in Place's work, but back then his books were not available where I lived, so I never got to getting them. Hello, I have been watching your videos a lot and I’m really trying to study the tarot de Marseille. I got a RWS deck many years ago, was never able to really get a feel for it, but I am drawn to the TdM as it gives the reader more room for their own interpretation. After watching this I’m goi g to purchase the Marseille tart revealed by Ben Dov. I’ve found another one by Marsucci and Aloi called Reading and Understanding the Marseille Tarot. Would you recommend?
Hi, Adam! I do not own the 'Reading and Understanding the Marseille Tarot'. I didn't hear much praise of this book, so it's probably not ground breaking. I hope you will enjoy reading Dr Ben-Dov's book!
I am a beginner in tarot learning with the rider waite deck. Can these book on marseille cards help me learn using rider waite deck or i need to buy marseille deck separately?
Hi! These books focus specifically on reading with Tarot de Marseille, so if it something that calls to you, you need a Tarot de Marseille deck. I also have a video on TdM decks for beginners on my "Tarot de Marseille" playlist, you might want to check it out :)
That's an exellent question! :) I think they can be helpful for any classical TdM, especially because they have images of the cards. Jodorowsky-Camoin deck has some minor add-ons that he mentions in the book (like the egg on the Papesse card or a door on Le Maison Dieu), but even if you don't have his deck, you can work with the book. J.M. David focuses specifically on Jean Noblet deck, but again - he provides the images of the cards and so does Camelia Elias with the Zoya deck. So to sum up: if you're starting with Yoav Ben-Dov and Jodorowsky&Costa, it would be most convenient to have a TdM of type II, like Conver on which both restorations are based, or Pierre Madenie, Chosson etc. Most popular restorations are done from type II TdM, for example Pablo Robledo tarot or Wilfried Houdouin tarot. From those easily available and affordable: Claude Burdel www.amazon.com/Tarot-Marseille-Claude-Burdel/dp/8883955943/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1508760099&sr=1-2 Hope it helps!
Yes, that helps, thanks. I just fell in love and obtained ($$$) a mint TdeM Rigel Press. It's a 1975 first edition. The images have some minor detail additions, but the big difference are the pips which show the four suits in symbols, very simple, like the Lombardy Tarot (which I love, love). The wands are little wands and the swords are little swords, not the straight and curved wands and swords in the traditional TdeM. THat's what I love about it. I also have the Madenie, and Grimaud, and Flournoy decks, but this Rigel will be such fun to work with when it arrives. I'm tempted to get the Millennium Tarot for those expanded borders. Love your relaxed, yet informative videos. Anne
