  • In our media saturated world & in light of the #metoo and #timesup movements, the question of what to with great art made by bad people, feels more relevant than ever. It’s a question each and everyone of us has had to grapple with at some stage. And in this video I will look at points for and against this conundrum.
So what exactly should we do with the work of immoral artists and is it really okay to enjoy it? Or should just we cancel all their work in its entirety? Can you ever truly separate the art from the artist? Should genius get special allowance? And can art transcend the artist & their transgressions? This mini documentary explores these questions and more.

With R Kelly for me it’s impossible to overlook his crimes. He is in jail now. Him and his music is now considered immorally offensive and should remain. It’s disgusting how he got away with his behavior and even worse culturally we on a societal level let it slide for so long.
Mj on another hand is a bit more complicated. He technically faced the justice system and they considered him innocent. It’s still awkward and we will never know the full truth with the first allegation and so it’s more up to each individual to decide whether the judges let a predatory go free or believe that he was innocent.
These things are complicated and we societally have to judge case by case whether what a celebrity is accused of is true for starters and than decide if what they’ve done is something forgivable.

Feel like this suggestion read my mind!
I work as a DJ in a gay bar in Ireland, and i was just thinking about why i can look past Azealia Banks but hesitate with artists like Chris Brown when i'm at work.
Also, sincerely appreciate your channel for deep dives into a lot of icons in pop who queer people gravitate to. It really has helped with work to develop a deeper understanding of why people love these artists. Cheers!

It’s definitely tricky, separating the artist from their art. Like R Kelly for example, “I Believe I Can Fly” is still an amazing uplifting song that can move you to tears, however songs like “Your Body’s Callin’”are cause for concern given his proclivities.
So it’s like what do you do when such perverse actions have made for good art?
For this very reason is why I do my best to not know anything about a celebrities personal life. I don’t want the art to be tainted.

One minute into your vid...I absolutely can and do separate the art from the artist. Always have. If I couldn't then I wouldn't have any music, books, performances, movies, art to enjoy. And just because I just learned this artist or that actor did something reprehensible doesn't suddenly invalidate their art or more specifically the way their art made me feel when I experienced it.

I'm of the same mindset that it really comes down to personal preference whether or not we consume media or art by these people. When we make that decision it's based on our experiences and those differ between every single one of us. It can feel like a cheap, cop-out answer to say, "well it depends" but that's kind of the reality of the situation. A lot of factors are simply out of our control.
This was a good video! It seems like quite a few people have thought about this to some extent and it's nice to get at least one perspective laid out. I guess it's hard not to think about when so much of it is in our face on social media ad nauseum 😅

I think perhaps, it depends on the severity? The different gradations of abuse merit different approaches?

I think it really depends on the art itself. Like with R Kelly “I Believe I Can Fly” I will always associate with 1997, Bugs Bunny and the movie Space Jam. It’s an iconic song of the 90s. But on the other hand songs like “Bump N’ Grind” / Ignition are a bit too close to what he did.
MJ is complex too. We will never know what really happened as accounts vary between the witnesses. He still has a loyal following and is dead a long time so what does a boycott achieve?
    It’s definitely complex

Well, IMO, art and music should be listened or watched if you like it or not, not because someone tells you to like it or not. We are so focus on the validation that we forget we are not perfect either. A lot of them are paying their debt to society with jail, a lot of them would never be captured and you still probably listen to their music. At the end, people should have their own criteria and love art as it is.

  • @hasanka.designer

Adopting a nuanced perspective appears most effective, proposing that the decision to separate the art from the artist be approached on a case-by-case basis. Various factors, including the gravity of the artist's actions, the impact on the art itself, and an individual's personal values, all contribute to this complex decision-making process.
In certain instances, I find myself adopting this approach. When faced with an artist exhibiting problematic behavior, I might resort to consuming their art through unauthorized means. This enables me to derive enjoyment from their work without financially supporting actions that I find morally objectionable. However, I am acutely aware that resorting to illegal means is ethically questionable, creating a moral dilemma. Recognizing that two wrongs do not make a right, it becomes a double-edged sword, highlighting the complexities inherent in navigating the ethical landscape of separating art from the artist.

I definitely separate art from the artist from both music and movies. Take director Woody Allen for example, I know he's considered as "Canceled" here in the states, but I still watch and love his movies. Roseanne Barr, I watch reruns of her show 'Roseanne.' It's one of my all time favorite shows.
    R. Kelly, what he's done is disgusting, but I thought he has or had one of the best male singing voice of his generation.
If we had to can problematic people in the entertainment industry, then 95% of the entertainers would be gone.
So, yeah. I separate art from the artist and no one can tell me what I can and can not do.
