And tried to make everyone accept her (Who's now a widow and with the bad reputation) as his future wife. And after he was sure that they would never be able to end up together, he let Hua Rongzhou live with her (Also after he made sure that Hua Rongzhou would be able to protect female lead from now on). On the contrary, although Hua Qian seemed to love Zhong Xiwu too, she hardly do anything for him, and always misunderstood him (I truly sympathised the male lead rather than the female lead in this drama).

Totally agree with you. I’ve just finished watching it. And although the ending is good, but the happy scene is too short. Almost none. All I can remember is how they were separated in Qian’s dream. I can’t get the image of them being happy together in the real life episode. 😢

I looked this one up before I started watching, and I'm glad I did. I'm at this point in my life when I say, "OK, that's it. I'm never investing my time in Chinese dramas unless I watch the ending first. I'm tired of bitter-sweet endings and the whole philosophy of "you never get what you really want in life". Life teaches me that already. I want my fiction to be full of HEA, thank you very much. Thanks to all the commenters.
Honestly, I wouldn't say its a completely sad ending. It's more of acceptance of one's mistakes and closure. It’s also full of promise/hope for a new start and a peaceful future. You can take it as a HE.
Athough many ppl did not like ending but it was a good direction from story telling point of view...coz qian gets a new start with xiwu. In reality, xiwu and qian had no interaction, xiwu loved her from distance... Also, finally in reality now she has someone (xiwu) who truly loves her despite everything (her exile, her tarnished reputation) which is what she wanted ..a peeson who truly loved her..as she said in the end of her dream. So although they have not shown their happy life. But in reality xiwu can actually be with qian despite her reputation. But in dream it was impossible for them. So it's a new start for qian and xiwu'a story!
The female lead acting was incredible.. i enjoy the shows.. maybe some don't like it.. but i think the plot was nice and the flow of the shows neat.. we need different view of drama.. maybe it ended not to your liking.. but i feel it well ended... there are lesson to... everything we did well come back to us as a karma whether is good or not. Anyway just enjoy the show no hate❤

Spoilers ahead: Qian didn't know he likes her in reality. But to have a detailed image about him in the dream must be because he constantly talk to her in her dream of what he have done for her like take care of her, and moved her to country side so that he can be with her. She is aware about his love in her dream subconsciously. However, she doesn't dare to assume that they can be together because of his status as the Lord. She repeatedly said this in her dream. She almost grab his hand when he confessed. "Can I really hold this hand?" m(II_II)m sobs..That is why she clings to her guard image, she didn't love him but feels safe and assure because she knows that he loves her wholeheartedly and free of responsibility. Well, that is a dream in everyone lives i guess. I am glad that she realised it afterwards. The dream is real because that is her true emotion, doubt, and her loves for him. She is afraid to have Xiwu in her dream, that is why she choose to leave him. But in reality, Zhong Xiwu really go against his mother and bring her away. He has proved to his mother that he can be both, serve as the Lord while keeping his love near him. Although the dream is not real, but it helps Qian and Xiwu relationship to a deeper stage. Loved this drama because I think, people who have faced harsh reality, guilt, and despair can have a second chance and needs help especially in terms of their psychological state changes. Many people don't understand this POV. The physical wound can be treated, but the pain in the heart will never really go away. It is up to yourself to cure this pain. Xiwu's herbs and incense helps her a lot to reach stability in her emotion. I am thankful to Xiwu for staying with her and love her unconditionally. Well done to all the actors and actress. It is definitely a HE.
So, just want to confirm because I've seen stern comments on the ending. Does she end up with Xiwu? I'm conflicted because the guard is a sweetheart too, but ML has lived her for so long....

i liked Xiwu/lord in original life than in her dream. In her dream i first shipped the lord with Hua Qian ,but later he just turned so obssessive and toxic so i had to change my mind to Rong zhou. so its like in dream i love Hua qian and Rong zhou .i wish he was real.
I thought that too, however than I understood in dreams we process our fears and insecurities. They effects the dream reality, so him turning toxic was her mind rejecting him because she was afraid of not being able to be together due to her prior marriage and that being together would mean waking up and facing reality. (In a way unconsiously she knew this was not real) Hua Rong zhou on the other hand was always good too her and felt safe because he was actually herself. That is why he/she was also able to smell thw scent and reassured her instead of questioning it. She wanted to protect and nurture herself that's why she also chose to go back at first. Only when she was truly ready to face reality did she chose to wake up. The story was masterful. It is a shame we did not get to see her and qiwu together in the real world.
I don't think the Lord is that obsessive. But he truly, persistently and deeply loves Hua Qian for several years. Since he lost her before, and now he had the second chance, he didn't want to lose her again. But after he was certain that they could never end up together, he let she live freely with her guard (After he made sure that Hua Rongzhou would be able to protect her from now on). The Lord sacrificed himself a lot for Hua Qian both in the dream and in reality. But she always looked over and misunderstood him... I actually think the Lord deserved someone better than her.

After watching the drama I started loving the main lead ..he was so loyal to his lady love till the end.. I have just one disappointment.. there was no intimate scene between them til the end. the female lead didn't confess for once that she also liked him.. she created an imaginative character in her dream because she thought nobody liked her what she failed to see that there was someone behind her who was always protecting her and so dedicated to her..😢 anyway the drama is definitely a Masterpiece and highly recommended..❤❤
I finished watching the drama and reading the novel and I would perfectly say that I love the drama more. I truly love the drama ending but they should've not been stingy on giving as a glimpse of post-dream/reality of these two. Xi Wu deserved to be loved why can't they give us an extra episode for us to see Xi Wu getting all the love from FL after all the tears he cried for her lol Xing Yue's acting is so excellent!!! He makes me cry over and over again in this drama which I rarely do. How can his eyes do all the talking while his expressions do the explications. Xi Wu breaks my heart to the point I can't move on like how can he love her unconditionally despite all the things she has done.The HRZ she portrayed in her dreams as someone who will protect and love her unconditionally despite everything is actually ZXW in reality, who she never noticed because of her obsession with ZYL. Real ZXW is much better and blindly in love with FL lol. Imagine, he saw all her wickedness and obsessions but still chose to fought for her and made his mother yield and support him even though she's unlikable, had bad reputations and her family being convicted.

I guess I'm one of those who like the ending, its not your typical happy ending just like in fairy tales, I like the twist in the end even if its kinda sad cause it teaches us to face our own reality even if its cruel or not what you dream of and not be contented in a fantasy or dream that you want to happen. It shows that in reality its not always happy and not always go to the flow that we expect or want to be. We have no choice but to move forward and face our own problems. I just a little sad cause all of the bond that they make in the series are not true it just a dream of her and her parents and maid are still dead. but overall I rate it 9/10

I just a little sad cause all of the bond that they make in the series are not true it just a dream of her and her parents and maid are still dead. but overall I rate it 9/10

Comecei assistir os primeiros episódios até o amanhecer do dia, parei no episódio 20, fui assistir o episódio final foi decepção total, a série não teve cenas de beijos, a concubina não combinou com o jovem mestre e casou com ele, não mostrou eles indo pra lua de mel o mestre combinou mais com a primeira esposa, poderiam se perdoar e ter final feliz, uma série tão boa terminou muito ruim 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
