    I'd just like to add to this by saying getting some things secondhand is perfectly ok and also to keep and reuse things if you plan on having more kids. Not everything has to be brand new such as a stroller/ travel system or even a crib or baby swing as long as they are good condition of course.

      Agreed! Most of the stuff we used the second time around was the stuff we already had.

      though it is not recommended to buy a car seat second-hand! as you do not know the history of the seat. everything else though is fine second hand :)

    This has been 9-years ago, but with our first grandchild we Googled reviews on all the car seats & strollers. Purchased the Chico brand of carrier & car seat. Daughter loved the idea of not waking the baby transferring him from the car to the stroller. It also transitioned well when he was old enough to sit up. It was easy to open & close, but it took both hands to put in the car and was a bit heavy. The one item I purchased for our home was the Chico high chair. It’s all a venal type of material and cleans easily. Has adjustable heights in the legs, feet and can lounge if they were too young to eat with us, but we still wanted him at the table beside us. It has a high back with adjustable locking straps. Four grand children later, it has held up extremely well. The locking wheels make it easy to move around and the removable plastic cover on the tray makes for easy cleanup. My husband thought it was expensive, but I think for the $145 we paid for it has been well worth it.

    Currently 6mo pregnant with my first child and trying to go for a "must have" setup because we want to start on her education fund right away so every cent saved is important. A few years ago we moved many states away from our family, so most of the things we have to get ourselves since we won't have a baby shower. So far we have:
    - Convertible car seat (all the way to booster seat). No mirror because based on our lifestyle (one WFH mom, one stay-at-home dad) there shouldn't be a reason to drive often and when it happens we should be able to have one parent in the back.
    - Used crib & leak proof mattress. Crib has multiple heights so there is a bassinet setting. A few crib covers.
    - A noise machine that is also a dim nightlight (so we can have a bit of light during nighttime feedings)
    - An alphabet crawling foam mat. Can be used as a secondary sleeping surface when baby doesn't know how to crawl yet, and planning on using it for some tummy time activities. Can put baby fence around it later to convert into a playpen area, and will be great as a room "rug" for when she's a toddler learning her abc's.
    - Adjustable cloth diapers (mama koala) and 2 wet bags.
    - Soft microfiber washcloths bulk packs (for burping, bathing, etc... )
    - A bulk box of baby wipes. To be used while we get used to the amount of laundry for the diapers and washcloths.
    - A cheap bulk set of multiple small plastic bins. To be filled with a few clean diapers/cloths/wipe packs and we can place each bin in multiple rooms.
    - "Travel" changing mat, to use on top of our bed, sofa, or crawl mat because no changing table. Packs into a bag so can easily take from one room to another.
    - Clothes and bath towels from thrift shops so a mix of things. Most clothes/towel items are only $1 to $3.50 !! I might buy a few of the zipper onesies new just because so far I haven't been lucky enough to find those at the thrift store.
    - Foam bath mat.
    - A kit with thermometer, clippers, etc...
    - Baby wash
    - A few bottles and pacifiers. No point in buying too many until she gets to try the few we have so we can see which ones she likes.
    - A few toys that weren't expensive ( under 10 bucks)
    - Planning to breastfeed/pump but one box of formula just in case we have issues at first with either production or latching.
    - Breast pump system prescribed by obgyn, so it can be covered by insurance.
    We've spent around $700 so far and I think I've covered all the newborn necessities.
    Not bought yet, but will:
    - Stroller. Planning to wait until she's at least 3 months so I can buy one at a thrift store and not worry if the model can do newborn or not.
    Under consideration:
    - a babycot to be used as a bassinet/lounger. Not to be used without supervision. Alternatively, a bouncer/rocker.
    - a nested bean swaddle. Since we saved so much, might splurge on these, but waiting to see how fussy of a sleeper she ends up being first.

    I love my baby wrap!!! I used my wrap with my toddler well into her first year. I stopped using it when I got pregnant closer to her 2 year mark but walks were spectacular. She would nap in it. I was able to wash dishes and eat, etc and still have her close to me. The baby wrap went from front carrying to back carrying so from newborn well into toddlerhood. I love it. I have a KeaBabies baby wrap

    Best stroller ever in my experience is a BOB. It's light for a jogger, compared to others. They're super easy to push. It will work on any terrain.
    A carrier is a life saver. While you're out or in the house and need to do anything around the house. If you want a wrap check out k'tan. Don't have a bunch of wrapping to do. First time using a wrap or carrier feed and change baby first then put in the carrier or wrap. Don't waste your money on a B'jorn. They don't have babies hips in the right place as they get bigger.

      @@ellieortmann7180 I've tried a few different ones and it's by far my favorite. When I had my second I sold my single jogger then got the double. Still light compared to others. My kids are 6&3. My 6 year to ld doesn't need it too often but my 3 year old still will and we have a baby due in July so it will get used for several more years.

    • @samanthasprague3296
      @samanthasprague3296 3 роки тому

      @Emma Hawke If you run a lot it's worth the investment. I know they can be slightly expensive but they don't compare to any other jogger. I've ran with a few different joggers and most were difficult to run with. The Bob out preformed all others. I recommend saving up or seeing if you can get a used one off Market place.

    I like this updated take on the basics. I didn't have a stroller with my first baby. I took daily walks and often spent half the day out (on foot) wearing him in a carrier. Once we had a second baby we got a stroller wagon that works for both kids. Looking forward to using a ring sling with my third baby. ☀️ Heidi

      I've discovered Susan through her baby videos when I had a baby. Gosh, I wish I'd known about doona from birth!! I only discovered and started using it with my boy when he was 6mo, but still SUCH an amazing item, and although expensive - totally worth the money!
      One most important point to take away tho (which she mentioned in all her videos) is that every baby is different, and what worked for her may not work for u at all. So buy some basics and "go with the flow" for the rest

    I 100% agree with the sound machine.
    I bought the nest and the baby shusher and I use both everyday. My baby likes being shushed to sleep so I use it to put him to sleep and the nest sound machine is to drown out the noise when I put him down so that I can wash dishes, cook, clean, etc. and not worry about waking him up due to the noise.

      Hello, this is Dr. James, analyzing the ingredients used for babies.
      99% water baby wipes contain hidden chemical preservatives, not suitable for newborns. So, what's the solution? You should use baby wipes made with 100% water. It's essential to use water-only wipes like Blissmile baby wipes.

  • @tilaw6397
    @tilaw6397 3 роки тому +2

    Great video as always!
    My opinion:
    1) Carefully chosen high chair is very important bc like u said, babies get fussy sitting & want head & foot rests to be comfortable. People who recommend the ikea one are moreso talking about ease of cleaning & affordability. There are better choices with comfy padded seating that are wipeable.
    2) i think snap onesies are best to start with. Zip onesies have the problem that if the size doesn't fit baby perfectly (which it often won't with the way baby sizing jumps in age intervals), the extra zip gathers at the crutch & is a nusance for baby & even looks ugly in pics. Zips can also be more restricting for babies leg movements. Yes u save 20 seconds with a zip over snaps but babies comfort & growth is worth the compromise imo
    3) don't even bother with buying gender neutral clothes as a goal to reuse in case u have the opposite gender for ur 2nd baby. The clothes get trashed from wash, wear, food stains. Unless ur doing it tough, u'll want to buy new nice things for baby 2.

    • @dvo1060
      @dvo1060 3 роки тому +2

      Ikea sells wipeable padding that can go in the ikea high chair. It’s like $10.
      Lots of shops on Etsy sell footrests for the ikea high chair for $20.
      So after buying all these additions the chair will come out to be around $50 which is still cheaper than any other chair out there, with all the problems that you mentioned fixed.
      But I completely agree with the other 2 points that you made about clothes!!!

    Sleep machines are great for traveling, we use alexa ambient sounds as an alternative when we’re home. However, I wouldn’t say that it something you need to have , it is convenient to have but some babies can sleep just fine without it

  • @bansheeveil
    @bansheeveil 3 роки тому

    Great advice except for the donna stroller and that "all car seats should be fine". The main thing you should look for is the independent safety tests done on each 0+ car seat. Plus after that one you just need to buy a rear facing car seat that will last you till 4-6 years old.

  • @christinamapleback7308
    @christinamapleback7308 3 роки тому +2

    Your body is not quite, your baby is used to hearing noise. It is 100% not recommended to have your baby sleep in a silent environment because it is simply not what they are used to. Another thing to keep in mind with a high chair is to make sure is has a foot rest they can reach. It helps with eating

  • @michellezevenaar

    These are excellent tips! But I disagree with some of your advice. Yes, it’s nice for car seats to be light, but I actually prefer our Graco 4ever convertible car seat and love that it’s super heavy. I feel my children are safer in them. Also, I wish I didn’t buy a stroller system because I transitioned to a lightweight stroller by the time my first child was 7 months old. I barely used the toddler portion of my big stroller. It was so heavy to handle on my own and was only useful for local walks in the winter when I used it with bunting. I love your examples here and I think you’re very right in saying that everyone has their own preference. My advice to new moms is to buy less at first and then buy extra gear as you go along and test out what you need.

    • @ellenjonasson94
      @ellenjonasson94 3 роки тому +2

      I was going to do this with my first, but then I read a lot of comments that people like the infant carrier to put them down when getting ready to leave or arriving somewhere. Not the case? I'd love to just do the convertible car seat and wear baby when I get places. But that might be idealistic.?

      @@ellenjonasson94 It's personal preference. It's not safe to leave babies, especially newborns, sleeping in a car seat unsupervised. I had an infant car seat with my first and she absolutely hated it! She would SCREAM the whole car ride. I switched her to a convertible car seat at 3 months and she did much better. With my second I had bought the Doona which I absolutely LOVED. So convenient with have a two year old at the time. She stayed in that until she was too heavy to take out the car (was about 9 months). We don't have the budget this time to buy another Doona. With having two kids I think it will just be easier to put baby in my carrier when we're out since I have to juggle a 6 & 3 year old also, so it will be easier and more cost effective for us to just get a good convertible car seat that will last them forever. We plan on buying another Britax. Absolutely love the brand.

    Yeah, because after having a newborn baby, babies do get cranky and fussy. Too, I've learned that by coming a Newborn my baby girl is 6 months old. She just turned 6 months on the 12th of December.

    Please moms read up on sound machines. Not all types of noise are good and as it turns out, most brands play the sound at a way too high volume. Some researchers say that unpatterned sound such as white noise leads to some cognitive issues. As a first time mom-to-be, I will be using a recording of heartbeat at under 50 Db of volume (which I think is the maximum recommended by experts)

    Sometimes you spend on items and your baby ends up hating them. I got the pack and play. I loved it but only used it for 2 months. The play part was never used when she was older. She would cry wanting out of it. My stroller was a cheap one. The wheels would squeak and get stuck. I tried to save money but now on my second baby we are trying to get something a little nicer. We were gifted a nice swing, my baby did not like staying in it. Maybe my second baby will like it cuz it’s still almost new.

    as a NICU nurse, your points are 100% accurate! in the NICU if you can’t afford a crib or bassinet and pack n play is recommended since it does it all and it is safe. i love how you hit the main basics you need to keep your baby safe. great video!!!

    Almost didn't get any breast pump, but last minute got the silicone one, and it was a highly used item just to save leaking milk during feedings. I could get a whole feedings worth of milk just because it was leaking. Never knew that could have even happened! Oh totally agree about sound machine, saved us for the period of time our baby was using it. He doesn't need it anymore, but it helped so much.
