Classic song and storytelling from one of the greatest. Chapin was also a humanitarian activist who dedicated himself to world hunger, even testifying before Congress. He died in a horrific car accident in 1981 at I believe 42. A shining light that went out too early but we'll always have his exceptional stories and music.

i don't think she became an actress. she married well but is in an unhappy marraige (and here, she's acting happy) and he never became a pilot, but kind of stayed true to himself.

In the end where he says they both got what they'd asked for, he goes on to say that "...and here, she's acting happy, inside her handsome home..." She didn't really become an actress, she got married to a rich guy and now she's just "acting" happy. So, neither of them followed their dream, but they both reached ironic versions of their goals, she's acting happy, he's getting high in his taxi.

Beautiful true story. The voice singing the part of Sue is "Big John" Wallace singing falsetto. Check out the live version on Greatest Stories Live. Next reaction, try "WOLD", "The Cat's in the Cradle" or the hilarious "30,000 Pounds of Bananas". A master storyteller gone far too soon.

I was stunned by "Big John's" voice when I saw Harry perform a free concert in Brooklyn's Prospect park one afternoon . He had this super deep voice perfect bottom end for harmonies in the songs that were played & then he sang the falsetto part of "Taxi" . Mind Blown !!

It seems logical that your next reaction should be the sequel to this song. However, at some point you MUST react to "Cats In The Cradle". It's probably his biggest hit; although, Taxi was a huge hit, too. Thanks for another great reaction, JM! ✌💙✌

This is the thing, tho. She didn't become an actress. She's pretending to be happy in her big house and wealth.
She's lying to herself just as much as he is.
Neither of them real really got what they wanted.

My brother, sister and I saw him one weekend and a couple of days later, while driving home from work, I hear on the radio a caller asking if they'd play "Taxi" in MEMORY of Harry Chapin - he had been killed in a car accident on the LIE earlier that day. I was stunned - what a loss for all of us. He was a beautiful soul.

She was "acting" happy in her handsome home-- that was her career, he was "flying" a taxi and getting "high". In essence, the universe delivered them their aims, but oh man, be careful what you ask for because the packaging is often very unexpected. Wisdom.

This song is one of those, that you look back on, when you you were a kid, but really didn't get the full impact of the story, because you were just a teenager. Now I'm 68, and we older folks have some life experience that we didn't have as an adolescent, and we get it now. Such a wonderful story.

I remember where and when I first heard this song. The Chapin Brothers were and remain so important to me. The Chapin Brothers played at our High School in the late 60s. My daughter Sara’s Godfather sang a part on his Mr Tanner at his concert in Savannah GA just before he was killed. Harry and the Chapins were philanthropists before it was popular. His death was an u believable loss. My daughter’s favorite song in his Dance Band on the titanic. Obviously he provided all her lullibies.

Harry's story telling is what he did. A Better Place to Be, and Mr. Tanner. She didn't become an actress anymore than Harry became a pilot. The line "and if she's acting happy inside her handsome home". She had done ok for herself, but the only acting she's doing is acting happy, just like the only flying Harry is doing is getting stoned driving taxi. His last name is pronounced Chay-pin

I truly miss the Era of thevsi ger writer that had such intense storytelling. You still have great writers today, but it's few and far in between. In this Era, you had Chapin, King, Lightfoot, Denver, Diamond, Simon, Simon, and Garfunkle, and so many great story tellers per their lyrics. I think Mick Jagger had a point several years
years ago when he said music used to mean something, but now it's more about a beat

Back in 1979 I was dating a Hollywood Starlet-TV/Movies who turned heads everywhere we went Her producer friend offered me the part of Tarzan in his movie. (with Bo Derek as Jane), I was told I could be the next Tom Selleck (his picture on the Nat Inquirer Mag). I turned it down saying... There is a huge difference between Fame & Fortune. With fortune I can live a better life helping family and friends, I never want anyone other than my family and friends to know who I am, you can keep the fame, and the magazine covers, I don't want it. I can earn my own fortune, but once that fame hits you it never leaves you alone. I was only 25 years old and still very happy i made that fateful decision.
