Does Clip Safe RAISE the gain after the signal returns below clipping, or just drop the gain as needed and leave it at the new gain setting? The 2nd is definitely preferable from an engineering perspective. I mean, is it really a brick-wall limiter or a smart gain reduction?

No, Clip Safe won't increase the gain level again. When you enable Clip Safe, it will continuously monitor your input signals, up to 96,000 times a second, and through a combination of analogue preamp adjustment and DSP, Clip Safe significantly reduces the risk of clipping by automatically adjusting the preamp gain if you're at risk of clipping.

Unlike the larger models in the range, Scarlett Solo 4th Gen doesn't feature Auto Gain and Clip Safe.
