Thank you Eric!
I've had two of these. Noisy little things, but the compression can be quite pleasantly punchy on the right source! If you are looking to buy a DBX 117/118/119 you should know that they were primarily made to be used with hi-fi systems so they only have RCA I/O. Mine were already modded with 1/4" I/O when I bought them though.
that’s pretty cool. i do like flaming lips gritty compressed drums sound. kinda similar maybe.
Nice run through 👍
Did you use the expansion mode with the mix on 100% wet? It didn't sound (to me at least) that it was the case.
The compression was pretty cool though. Exactly what I'd expect from a dbx - I have the 160A and the original 166.
Keep up... cheers from Brazil.
Yep 100 percent wet for the expansion example. At 4:45 the mix knob is clearly at 100% wet. Just checked to make sure. Great compression sounds.
what does expansion do exactly ?
Expansion increases dynamic range. Loud gets even louder, quiet even quieter.
Kinda bummed they don't have an M/S version, but I suppose I can workaround that limitation.
on an aux bus w this plug-in, high pass an eq first plus have a drum bus for everything that’s sides / not to be mid / lower frequencies?
@@chinmeyswayjust use a m/s matrix
you could do a M/S matrix ITB... basically: summing left and right would give you the mid signal, whereas summing left and a polarity-reversed right channel would give you the side. To convert it from MS to LR you would have
L= mid + side
R= mid + (-side)
and pan accordingly.
on reaper you have a center cancelling plugin, as well as M/S encode/decoders. you can work around with mixing the polarity-reversed, center-cancelled signal added to the original to then isolate the mid signal...
that's how I pretty much turned 3 tracks from a stereo buss when recording 2-track, live sessions, and so on🤓
it is NOT free its a trial
