"Silence of the Yams". I love my Silent Yamaha Nylon, so sensual and inviting to play without disturbing people. Have the wireless THR 30 II amp also. The only issue I have, is my strap keeps coming off. Strap locks won't fit the body fasteners. If you have a connection to Yamaha Canada, please get them to design new strap pegs. Thank you.

Yamaha is pretty much everyone’s first acoustic or electric guitar. After that, people are quick to ‘graduate’ to much more expensive instruments, to distance themselves from being seen as a novice. I came full circle ten years ago. I have 3 Silent guitars (1 x 110s and 2 x 200’s, S+N) Many acoustics/trans acoustic. Their live equipment is amazing. Mixers sound great and their PA’s are fantastic since they bought out NEXO. They also own Line 6, so all that tech is finding its way into their new products. Not to mention their piano’s and wind instruments etc. They usually have a big music showroom in major cities around the world, so if you travel, its a no brainier. You can visit any store world wide, and get warranty work carried out too, if needed. Just a great company, and always high quality and full of innovation. Also, did I mention value for money? Once you drop the ego and look beyond the label, you will find the other manufacturers are building inferior products, for a higher price! Life’s a LOT easier if you just accept that as a novice, you were right, first time!😂

So ironic. Everyone in my family including myself, started out with a Yamaha and eventually moved on to Martins and Taylor’s. Now here I sit at 54 actually considering purchasing the FG5. I finally got to try one on Friday and now can’t get it out of my head despite owning a beautiful little 400 series Taylor 25th anniversary edition. I think I might be calling them first thing next week to actually secure the guitar. They said they would hold the guitar for a week for me to take some time to think about buying it which I thought was very kind of them. Lol

Pretty cool they finally put a line out on the Yamaha amp. I had the previous generation on display when I worked at Sam Ash and my one request would have been a line out to a PA to use the amp live. I’d actually like to just have the preamp and effects unit as a floorboard unit I could plug into my PA.

4:15 I'm sorry. No. There is no microphone in the Silent guitar, it is a modeled high-end Yamaha guitar that can be blended in with the under-saddle pickup.
From Yamaha's website: SRT Powered is a new system designed to recreate the body resonance of an acoustic guitar in a bodiless guitar. Yamaha developed SRT Powered, collaborating with recording artists to create a system tailored to the unique properties of the new SLG body and modeled after the tones of a high-end Yamaha acoustic guitar captured using a carefully selected microphone in a professional recording studio environment. By actually reproducing the sound of an acoustic guitar-right down to its natural sustain and decay-Yamaha lets guitarists experience the genuine body resonance, body tone and ambiance of an acoustic guitar.
SRT Powered sound can even be mixed with the sound from the instrument's piezo pickups, allowing guitarists to be even more flexible in their creative endeavors.
Because the SLG can virtually reproduce the sound of a guitar recorded with a microphone, players are free from complicated procedures involved in mic-ing up a guitar when recording at home or in other settings.

I’m guessing the guitar effects should be off and the tone and base in center. Because the amp is designed for acoustic, the pickup/mic should be all mic? Thanks for your input.

Not sure why tonewoods are necessary in this application. An acoustic guitar is a “sound pump” by definition and tonewoods make a difference in the sound. The silent guitar employs a pickup solely to make sound, so the use of tonewoods doesn’t make sense. I would absolutely own one (I have owned several Yamaha acoustics), but I would prefer a graphite model for the durability factor.

Great review and superb guitars. It's a shame that it's mainlly promoted as a silent or practice guitar (i.e. not one that you would use on a gig)... all WRONG. They're naturally loud and resonant and the neck, pickup and tuners are superb. I've had mine for two months and it's now my natural go-to guitar. I also have an older THR amp than yours but the combination works really well. I use my SLG through a clean amp/channel on my Axe-FX3 and I'd use it over any other acoustic for recording.

Hey John, I like your style and taste in gear so I thought I'd ask your opinion. I purely play to amuse myself and play acoustic guitars, but I'd like a little amp to tweak the sound and add effects just to keep myself interested.
I was close to buying one of these Yamaha thr30-IIA but upon hearing good things about the Fishman loudbox series I thought again. ( in my case I'd be looking at either the "mini"or "artist" version.) I will also be using either amp as my home stereo via Bluetooth/aux to play MP3s.
Considering I just want the best sound and the most stimulating features to add enjoyment to my acoustic playing and I will never be gigging or filling a large area with sound, which would you recommend? Or any other suggestions? Anyone please feel free to give me your 5 cents. Cheers from Australia and love your work John if you read this.

Yeah, this is way to far out there for my liking. I’m sure it works and performs amazing if it’s made by Yamaha (considering they’re amazing reputation❤) but I would never be able to get used to even holding something like that. Plus I’m a bit of a traditionalist when it comes to music by most standards.
