stayed to the end ! Great videos. I've just inherited a really nice Freelander Station wagon, last one before they ended the freelander,,,and I'm studying (via a great essex ham course) for my foundation. Love your 'getaways' and can see me doing them. How do you square your nights awa playing radio with your partner? Would love some tips !!!!
Keep up the great videos,,, I'm learning loads ! Cheers now.

Cheers Tim, good luck with the foundation, 10m and 11m can be a fun area to operate radio esp during the early summer. My girls are in their teens so I can now get a night away 2 or 3 times a month occasionally more. I've got locations I can get to quickly, I tend to go late in the day and then leave at dawn both through summer and winter. I run my own business so I can be flexible with doing the normal things in life and getting away for a night.

Submarines and 3 digit spy stations. Lots of static. Some teletype. Some slow cw beacons. During the winter of 96 I "pinched" the use of about 1/2mile of electric fense wire. One night I heard a low whine that sent chills up me spine. As my rig dosen't have a local oscillator. It was a MISTERY that haunts me to day. Ps the rig is a 1921 homemade loose coupler rig gifted to me 30 years ago with a Sylvania diode or a set up for Galina whisker diode. I added a guitar amp. I surmise that the whine was solar or geo magnetic. Thanks again for good show de kv4li.

I did this when I was 14 (in 1966), using a barbed wire fence that went all the way round a massive field. Boy oh boy, it worked, how it worked!

How many meters long was it?

    • @NigelDixon1952
      @NigelDixon1952 2 роки тому

@@RC-Heli835 A good question! If I remember well enough, the field was about 500m long by 400m wide. No antenna tuning, it was such a low power TX nothing could be damaged. I connected the antenna to the top wire, which literally went all the way round the field. For the ground I just knocked a long metal tent peg into the soil. I couldn't believe how well it worked! The TX output was only about 1 watt, but the signal was loud and clear for miles, just as was the case with Ray's friend. I bet an electric fence would have done even better than the barbed wire, owing to the wire being insulated at every post it was attached to. Of course, this could only work on medium or long wave, but if the same thing was done using a good antenna tuner and more power, I bet that signal would go for miles and miles and miles!

My primary HF antenna is a 160M full wave loop. I've occasionally been able to hear the 60khz timing signal (the one that all the "atomic" clocks use to update) broadcast by WWV on my Kenwood TS2000, whose receiver's low end is 30khz.

Interesting video and thanks for posting it up. I’m a SWL and have tried ground loops, ground spike dipoles etc and some work great. Especially good for LW DX since ferrite antennas get plagued by QRM these days. I’ve used steel wire fences in the countryside than run for miles as well 👍🏼

Magnetic loops IMO are the way forward. If you are in an area where there isn't a lot of QRM, then fine, but for where I am I get good results on LF/MF from a Wellbrook. I also have an MLA30+ that I really need to try out. I have so many sources of noise! My favorite band is 60m for inter GB NVIS comms but during the weekend when my neighbour is home the noise goes to about S5 and that coupled with the various PSU's on my laptop (a real issue on 60m) and just general noise from xDSL etc. it's a losing battle. I've deliberately avoided LED lights to replace the GU10 50W halogens in the kitchen / dining area for this specific reason but given the price hikes in energy costs I've decided to put the things in but gone for a known brand and may take steps if they don't conform to EN55022 or whatever European Norm they claim to conform to. I was very active in trying to get PLT banned.
    It's just so f**king sad.

I use a kelly kettle set up for brewing up and cooking on which is fun, and have a ssb/multimode crt9900 running off a separate car battery linked to a small solar panel to keep it topped up,,coupled up to a Sirio ML145 antenna.
So looking forward to passing the exam and using 10 metres on my radio,,,,and am looking at maybe a dedicated HF mobile rig. Whats your opinion on the little G90 radios??

The coil makes a difference for worse. I think that goes for almost any coil in a antenna system placed at the end indoors. The antenna itself was on the ground which is also not preferable but still a interesting experiment to do!! You could probably repeat it one day and take the loop a meter of the ground and get rid of the coil indoor.

I know that I massively late to the party, I can't see what that cable reel is made from, if it is non conductive you could have lot of inductance. If you had a few spare metres of wire you could have wrapped a few turns on top and shorted them out. Well done for going out in those conditions..

Hey Carl, I have a few friends that are using loop on the ground and they are really happy with them. I'm going to try one out too because they seem to be able to hear stations that I'm unable to hear. As for the wire try to see if you can get some surplus military communications combat field wire. That way you won't need to borrow. BTW one of the lads I talk to on 40&80 meters uses inexpensive picture frame wire. I want to thank you for this experiment especially with the weather.

  • @JxH

If the Velocity Factor of a very long (multiple wavelengths) antenna wire is any different than the Velocity Factor (~1) of the passing radio signal in air, then at some point the passing RF and the induced current in the wire will start to go in and out of phase due to the different velocities. Thus, after a certain length, any further increase in antenna wire length will start to be counterproductive. I've not seen anyone mention this factor before, but it can't really be news to the experts. I wonder if this is related to the recommended max length of a Beverage antenna at ~1.75 wavelengths ? Anyone know ?

As a receive antenna a loop on the ground may help to improve the signal versus noise ratio, it’s lowers the reception in general but the theory is that the noise is less so that the signal can be picked out of the noise. I’m not 100% convinced
