optifine is an fps enhancer mod and that is why the torch does that, called dynamic torches.

This actually happened to me and my friends on a call and on a minecraft server. Apparently one of my friends (Spidermemo_03) knew about this and kept freaking out and telling us to leave the game before *it* happened. We didn't listen cuz we just thought he was overreacting and ofc we made a fatal mistake. Met up at school the next day and said that it was probs a glitch.....only one of us of the 5 wasn't there.
