    A far cry from Dad's old John Deere 40 with a single row corn planter that took all day to attach and set up.

      The one thing about those early planters is they were built to last for ever.

    I remember my grandfather planting with his JD model A tractor and 2 row planter was considered state of the art in the forties and fifties. He would be in shock for what they use now to plant corn

    Incredible to think about the fact there’s $970,000 wrapped up just in the tractor and the planter...😮

      Actually it's more than that. The number's he quoted are for the base model. No real bells and whistles like auto steering and what not. I bet the tractor alone is pushing 640k and the planter is probably pushing 500k. I'm looking at the John Deere's site right now and one of the planters options adds an extra 94k. That is the most expensive option but there are several which add 10-30k as well. Maxed out the planter runs just a shade under 629k. No wonder the little Mom and Pop farms went under.

      Keith Martin ....I’m sure that your rig works just as well! If one doesn’t have tens of thousands of acres-mostly in large open tracts-to get planted there’s really no need for something that huge and expensive.

      @gregbaldwin5144 5 років тому +1

      I'll give you my answer...consider if GPS goes out or has problems, which it does. Planting beans you can get away with eyeballing or wayward planting but if something happens planting corn you can quickly have a mess come harvest. Having that guide line from the markers is reassuring and almost necessary

    I guess that's really tuff to do the planting on the headlands, or the planter/tractor have some auto-guidance help to do this job?

    • @bigtractorpower
      @bigtractorpower  5 років тому +1

      There are headland auto guidance packages. Most farm’s I film at here in WKY still like to use the marker arm on the first boundary pass to have a line of sight for the second bass as normally there are curves and obstacles to go around.

  • @johnwoods7577
    @johnwoods7577 5 років тому +1

    Why do they plant (we say drill in the UK) the headlands first? You might think they plant the field then work up (cultivate) the headland and plant that last

    • @bigtractorpower
      @bigtractorpower  5 років тому

      Most farm’s here do the boundaries first but not all. With GPS some farm’s I film at plant the headlands last. Especially ones using two track tractors because they berm the soil. Planting a head land goes way back so you could see where to end your pass evenly and turn around. Today with row shut off it can all be done automatically.

      Troy Julius I didn’t know that. You don’t see much tobacco in my part of Kentucky anymore. I’m not a fan of smoking or chewing but it sure is refreshing to see a tobacco patch here and there.

      And we could probably tell exactly when you turned it off. I was a high school kid dishing with an Allis WD in same field with a old farmer with a Farmall M. He stopped me in mid field & put me in my place. "Ed can't drive that tractor straight, & neither can you!" Looking back, my track resembled a snake.

      I farmed long before gps was in service. We only had a handful of drivers that could start out and maintain straight planter rows. It was considered an art form and became very competitive. Had a couple of newbies fill in when we got behind. One sighted in on a distant landmark which turned out being an ocean freighter sailing up the Deep Water Channel to the Port of Sacramento and another just made a rectangular field look like an Olympic slalom course. The only comment by the owner was "oh well, you can plant more seed in a curvy row".

      Stirv the newer 24 rows fold 4 across the back now. For John Deere they are the 1770NT and currently the 1775 NT.

    • @stirv6462
      @stirv6462 5 років тому

      Yes I’m aware of that, they also don’t have 15 per side on a 24. I was simply describing the manner in which they fold and then gave him the row layout.

    • @bigtractorpower
      @bigtractorpower  5 років тому +2

      Yes. This 36 row still uses the marker arm on the first perimeter pass around field. You can see the marker out on the very last 30 seconds of this video.

    • @that1guydoesthings
      @that1guydoesthings 5 років тому +1

      I work for a custom planter manufacturer and I would say the marker option goes on less than 5% of the planters we produce.

      When we order them in my area in Canada, none come with markers. When farmers bring them up from the States, nearly all of them come with markers. The customers who have them don't use them here, but they do add ballast to the wings in tougher field conditions

    What are the seed rates because we can plant 600 to 700 acres with a 24 row 30

    • @bigtractorpower
      @bigtractorpower  5 років тому

      You can plant 600 acres in a day? The 400-500 acres is what the DB90 seeds in a work day. It will cover around 250-300 acres between refills. I think they do a population around 30,000.

    • @jayhuff4674
      @jayhuff4674 5 років тому

      Yes we can do up to 700 8n a day. But we ate planting cotton the population is lower and the seed sizr is smaller

      Camel Tanker well say if they have planted 8000 acres of corn and say that average yield for them is 200 so go 200 x 8000 would be like 1.6million bushels of corn then sell it for 3.50 average that’s like 5 or 6 million before you even start harvesting beans

    • @farmermatt629
      @farmermatt629 5 років тому

      Nick Allan I guess if you don’t account for land cost or rent that’s a pretty good deal 8000x13,000 per acre FYI in my area that’s a conservative number 104,000,000$ plus 40$ per acre for taxes 320,000$ .... 3.50$ corn won’t sustain farms in my area

    • @PaulsonFarms
      @PaulsonFarms 5 років тому

      Equipment is averaged out over its life time, and there is also residual value when you're done with it. Usually notes on equipment are around 5 years, so you're not necessarily paying the whole amount at one time. The price is then divided up on the amount of acres, so it might look like quite a bit but in the end it might only cost you $5 an acre. On top of all of that it can also be written off using the sec 199 tax form.

    • @davidsonlankford1168
