    How do you get them to look like the picture on the box? I want to know for my little siblings

    • @Dansplains
      @Dansplains  6 років тому +15

      Basically to make the crystals look like the ones in the box: use 1/4 cup hot water, mix in the whole pack of crystal mix, but it in a fluted plastic bottle, like a water bottle or an orange juice bottle. The idea is a sheltered growth area prevents the liquid from evaporating, which gives the crystals more time to grow. If you use the little plastic dish, all the liquid will evaporate and leave behind undeveloped crystals. You could even try putting the crystals in a sealed bottle, Idk what will happen. It took about a month for me to grow the crystals like the box.

      So did you place the rocks in the plastic bottle? I'm a little unclear about what you used to place the rocks in? I very well could be reading it wrong

      Tips: Distilled water, plastic or glass covered container, no disturbances of container, no splash residue on side walls (look up sugar making technique for no false seeds), use a coffee filter to strain the mix, protect from dust. Step 1: Grow some seed crystals, step 2, use these seeds with the goal of them being "the only place that crystals are deposited". Watch closely as you will sometimes have a nice single seed growing, then false seeds will start and begin to compete and often encrust the nice one... Use it repeatedly until you get it right... Instead of using evaporation to control the super saturation, you are using temperature to control it. This also means getting the initial solution concentration as close to correct as possible. Either by weight, or by specific gravity... So this can be done by dissolving as much crystal as it will take over heat. Another trick is to attach a seed crystal to a hair by evaporating solution on it until it is captured, then hang it in the solution. Keep repeating over and over until you get some keepers... The solution will never go bad, and since you filter it each time and use distilled water, it stays clean...

    Picked one of these kits up at the $1 store for my 6 year old girl (pictured left) and before I could unpack the rest of my dollar store haul, she had already opened the package and lost the instructions. Hence I went to UA-cam in hopes I could find some thinking there was no way someone would put in the effort to do a video on it. To my surprise, I came across yours! Thank you, and I love your summary at the end.

    We had these and they came out disappointing. Later my mom put the whole thing in a bowl and poured a lot of hot water over it, without my knowledge or consent hehe. It completely dissolved destroying what little crystal growth there was. I was like "You ruined it, it's all dissolved!" and she said "No, there's still 2 big ones." They were the granite base rocks lol. I forgot about it for a couple of months as it sat on a shelf. When I rediscovered it, the water had completely evaporated, the inside of the bowl was covered in a thin layer of crystal but there were also a few good sized rectangle/stunted pyramid shaped chunks of crystals!

    I want to be a geological engineer so that I can grow a mountain in my back yard in only a year or two It could probably change the world and the most effective and positive advanced natural modification in probably the earth im only 18 not in college yet but I guarantee that once I accomplish that I will grow my own planet imagine the free oil I could make oil reproduce and the atmosphere richer the globe would be naturally modified to be bigger than it is now moisture from the home grown mountains would have so much moisture to have 100 times more than the earth has now .

    this is the wrong way to grow nice large clear crystals. the tin foil is reacting with the chemicals in the solution causing those cottony growths. to get nice large clear crystals you need to grow then from a single crystal seed that is then suspended into a super saturated solution of chemical in distilled water. Buffalo university has an amazingly accurate and in depth 2 part series on youtube that shows you how to do it the right way with Alum. those kits from the dollar store have the right chemical but you need about 10-20 packages to make enough solution to finally get large clear crystals. and DO NOT mix colors! they use different chemicals to get different colors and shaped crystals and by mixing them you wont be able to get a large clear crystal because crystals are pretty much pure whatever chemical. mixing chemicals won't allow for pure crystals to form.
