My favorite version of “This Boy” will always be the live version from their second Ed Sullivan appearance. The build to the middle section ALWAYS got to me for several reasons. The little riff that guides George to use a D9 chord instead of his usual D7 chord with Ringo accenting it with his bass drum that builds the tension up to him using a E9 as opposed to his usual E7, makes his “Cry, cry cry-yie-yie-e” positively SELLS the return to the 3rd verse. Sorry, Morcambe and Wise, but their energy levels now in the states had them build their dramatic talents up!!
"Yes It Is" was another Lennon song like "This Boy"that used 3 part harmony, they were experimenting with unusual harmoines, and pulled it off well. I thought that one was really cool, and with Harrison's Volume Pedal used on the guitar parts [Volume Pedal was a brand new thing in late 1964, early 65] . He used it on "I Need You" as well.
I totally teared up when watching them do this song on Beatles 64. The harmonies blew me away & they were all on 1 microphone. Thanks for the excellent breakdown! 😊
I don't understand why some UA-cam channels can play entire Beatles' songs and get away with it while others can't. I guess it's always a matter of time. I got a video taken down years ago because I played a few seconds of "Hey Bulldog" to show how my dog reacted to it (she would bark back at the boys, it was so cute). Anyway, hope you're feeling better.
Yeah I get some shit comments like “well xyz plays 45 seconds!” And I’m like good for them I guess. I’ve never been able to play more than 8 seconds straight. I’ve gotten 18 seconds for Lost but it’s edited together/pauses cut out.
It's the "Morecombe and wise show". And were a British comady instatution I believe in 1960's through 1980's. Though they still show reruns especially at Christmas. Their Christmas shows were the big thing back in the day.... apparently.
@larsland I never ment it as a criticism. As your not British there really is no way for you to know. I only ment to inform that's all. Lighten up By the way the scetch that everyone "cites" from this duo is the "all the wrong notes" scetch. It's worth a look. ....If you're intreasted
On the subject of Yoko, the Beatles, et al., everyone really needs to keep in mind that they are all just _people_ . They are *human beings* who make mistakes, mistreat each other, change their minds, and regret their actions later. A complete picture of the situation, as Lars says, will ensure that no one looks good. If such things upset you, you need to leave your hero worship and irrational hate at the door and grow up a little, maybe a lot.
Yes, they are "just people", but also they are autonomous people with free will and accountability, and I'm not going to automatically forgive someone who doesn't deserve it. I don't expect perfection, just the bare minimum of empathy and common sense.
@@DC_Prox I’m not sure we’re the ones wronged and therefore not the ones to dole out forgiveness. All I do is find information and relay it. Much of it isn’t pretty. It is what it is.
Lars, great job again. One of my all time faves (got to hear it live at the John Lennon Tribute); yes I still find it jarring...John was peerless. My favorite Beatles' song, if you're curious, is " If I Fell". Like "This Boy", those majestic vocals of John's are right up front. Speaking of good vibes...If I Fell...just for you from my Echo. Feel better. Can't wait for the next one. Lastly, as The Beatles would say, "Happy Kringle!"😊
Doing an “if I fell” breakdown on Patreon this weekend (with I’ll Be Back and Baby It’s You)! I love that damn song so much. And thanks for the good vibes, Happy Kringle!
So now I have "This Boy" playing in MY head for the rest of that day... (Over here in the UK, "Morecambe and Wise" were to British comedy what the Beatles were to pop music. I'm old enough to have seen them live in the theatre in the early 70s.)
Those in the cheap seats clap your hands...the rest of you "Ruttle" your jewelery lol. The best comedians have ADHD, go for it Lars!! Smokey and the Robinsons LMAO too! As an 8 year old in 1964, This Boy where John sings the "Cry-hi-hi" I knew that was a magical muscial moment even then...perfectly shows why the Beatles were more than just another band...it was the vocals were superior along with the writing. And Motown knew they were a big threat, and both ended up co-existing to dominate the charts. The Beatles became friends with many of them and they covered many Beatles songs as well. Deacdes later, McCartney fully paid for the restoration of the original Motown grand piano used at Hitsville Motown studio in Detroit for the museum. And Smoky Miracle, uh, Robinson, was forever grateful to him, they were buddies anyway. I just reported that so I could say"Smoky Miracle" lol. I am a retired school music teacher...
@larsland great editing. thanks for letting us in on the process for the white album project Lars and thanks for just letting us in. you always give us the truth.
@@larsland Ah of course , Iiiiiiiiiiiiii should've known better with a girl like you 😆 A true fan! ( Just making fun of those older folks here. That wish to have Ringo's drum stick stuck up their asses spreading misery on the internet. ) Hope you feel better soon lovely. Peace and love ✌
Its a great song.. I learnd the chords on the guitar.. i can sing most of it but part of the vocals just get to high for me to sing anymore .. maybe when i was like 17 still. Haha
I did see Backbeat in the movie theater.. I remember it being an enjoyable watch.. the backstory of the early days.. obiously the actors just kinda resemble the lads but the acting was good and the energy was there.. i was only 21 mins you
This video is so unhinged, I love it.
Thank you lmao best compliment

Thanks! I love this song so much 😊
Smokey and the Robinsons, on Lost in Space. Robot sings the bass part. 😂

No matter how disappointing it is

how weird for a guy (Ian McDonald) to write a book when it's clear he doesn't get the subject he's writing about
