  • This series presents in shortened video form the tactical problems Field Marshal Moltke presented at the Prussian Army Staff College. Moltke coined the phrase that "No plan survives first contact with the enemy." He believed fighting effectively was exploring a series of options and these options were explored in his Tactical Problems.
In these videos we look at these problems, and their solutions, with the lens of playing wargames well.
This video is about the question, and solution for Problem 31

The distances he pushes large detachments out are always fascinating. You would think with horse messengers as the communication method you would be hesitant to push that far, but the fact that he is using real towns in his cases shows the distances were how they thought of an appropriate deployment in that period.

very interesting! Im wondering why the enemy would be unlikely to take yhe northern road from Gross Kreutz to Brandenburg and give battle along that axis? I assume it's a terrain issue?

The spirit of the write up as I interpreted is was that there were limited places to property engage, so the axis the enemy would choose was their best option. The problems and their solutions do disregard a lot of detail to make their points, so its not that your idea would not work. It just didn't help illustrate their point. Good observation! Thanks for commenting.

Bringing Moltke's ideas back from these old books takes some study for all of us to be sure. Thanks for watching it!

Interesting that the advance guard has that much artillery. The right flank being more or less secured by the waters, it’s just a sizeable distance between them and the main body. Now of course we know this and the theoretical enemy does not, so it’s not likely that a disaster filled crushed flank from a quick moving enemy would likely occur, but you could see the weakness. I also question, is 5km too far back for the reserve? That’s what an hour march if the main body gets hammered? Why not have them closer? Always can second guess these things, but I do like the general logic in the answer displayed. Absorb the enemy with constant eyes on their movements and draining them before the main fight. You can see though why the French would be successful in counter logic at the same time.
