Count Egmont was beheaded in the Main Square of Brussels in 1568 after sentencing in the Court of Blood during the Spanish Fury of the Duke of Alba. His crime: feeling responsible to protect all his subjects, not just Catholics. I've just discovered Apollo's Fire. Jeannette Sorrell is over the top wonderful. I'm so happy. Thank you.
I love how dark the period instruments makes this piece sound. You can also tell you all play with incredible passion. This conductor is dragon fire. She reminds me of my old choir director back in university. He could make your vocal chords react before your brain new what happened.
I remember when you came to the Cadogan Hall, London for the Proms, I was a volunteer and you kindly helped me after the concert with a disabled lady, talking about the theorbo etc., it made their day, thank you so much, you are so kind
I was noticing this morning the way a violin/viola player was watching the cello section. That’s part of what makes this ensemble so great. They pay attention to each other, not just the conductor.
I forgot to mention, the Egmont Overture has a new meaning for me, I have been researching my ancestry and I found that Count Egmont is my umpteenth greatgrandfather, this is the best version ever!! than you once again, I love looking at your videos
Finally, an Egmont with clarity of sound and performance. Contemporaneous instrumental timbres and size of orchestra...wonderful!...whooda thunkit? Well done, indeed.
I only recently discovered this ensemble - what a discovery! They really do play with passion. They certainly are up there with the best. I really love period instruments - as Christopher Hogwood said, it's like stripping off the dull Victorian varnish of a great painting to give a fresh & new appreciation. This ensemble have certainly done this with the 'Egmont' overture! I shall be watching more of themo be sure!
I keep coming back this magnificent performance - it is sensational. Miss Sorrell is such a superb director and the extremely high quality of the musicianship of the core AF players has been enhanced by additional top rate Baroque artists who have swelled the ranks of the orchestra..
Magnifique d’interprétation et avec une femme d’exception qu’est Jeannette Sorrell qui mène la baguette après de nombreuses répétitions détaillées comme habituellement ! Bravissimo
All of the ensembles that make up Apollo's Fire are just superb - Jeannette Sorrell gets them to produce such a perfectly considered sound - timing, intonation and the sound blends are just the best. For example, Apollo's Fire's rendering of the Monteverdi Vespers are far better than Eliot Gardner's production of the same work, which was considered to be the exemplar at the time.
Apollo's Fire is one of the premier orchestras in the world, and one of the few specializing in period instruments. In my days as a Classical Radio Programmer and Host, I could always depend on Jeanette Sorrell and this group of musicians! If you would like to hear a pre-concert (or post-concert) lecture on this piece, I have linked to this performance as my highlighted performance of this piece. In the text below my lecture video, I have also linked to a performance by the Berlin Philharmonic conducted by Thielemann, so you can compare the texture of the original instruments to modern - it's an immediately apparent sound! To hear my lecture on Beethoven, this work, and the interplay between technique and emotion, just click here: ua-cam.com/video/UKghUdsslQw/v-deo.html
Personally, i feel the opening Adagio section is a little fast. However, the subsequent Allegro is just right tempo-wise, so i do not wish to be overly critical...
Good Lord, how "modern" movie score composers steal from all these masters... "Pirates of the Caribbean"... the theme is obviously stolen from Egmont...
I came from the furtwängler Egmont overture ... what should I say... sorry misses fire but this Interpretation is too high and fast for me ... destroying the whole peace ... hear Furtwänglers Interpretation ... that is real strength... and you can feel Egmont and the whole peace makes sense ...

Karajan, Boehm, Jochum, Furtwangler are on another planet !!

I too notice and appreciate this about them, particularly when they are performing as a smaller group.
Maravilloso!!! Y mil veces más 👏👏👏👏

My favorite overture . Excellent performance . I can play it all day . Thank you for posting it . Sehr Gut . Danke .
So so so refreshing to hear classical era music performed on period instruments. Such a different timbre and feeling. Thank you for sharing!!
Absolutely wonderful rendition - and the videographer was excellent

Magníficamente dirigida, es espléndida!!!. Grandiosa. Gracias
Awesome. The best Egmont that I already listen to. Thanks a lot
And the somewhat more intimate hall embraces the timbre and magnifies it!
Magnífica harmonia e mistura de timbres (cores).
Please come soon again to Ireland. Mairéad Tallon, Fublin
Superb... Thank You... 😊
I have to listen to this every
Great orchestra. Great conductor, super talented!
An amazing ouverture from Beethoven,it is even based on the history from Zottegem in Belgium
Brava Maestra, bravi tutti👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 the articulations and the balance are fantastic !
Me encanta esta versión de Egmont. Sabor y musicalidad plenas. Magnífico
💖
Old crook Horns sound better than the one’s now. The old horns sound round, loud, distorted, cracking, and imperial. I love it
BRAVO Jeannette!!! Lovely Rendition!!!

LATTE DI NOCI
This is the music I would have wanted if I was to jump into a super massive black hole.

LA MIA RISPOSTA A TUTTO CIò è ZENZERO
that's a drug wao !!!
La obra es del gran BEETHOVEN; pero está interpretación no suena a Beethoven.
Why? Por que crees eso?
GUCCI GANG

Well, it's making a lot of sense to me. I suspect there's room for both Furtwangler and Sorrell in Egmont.
