    As a current D1 player myself, I'd like to clear some things up from my own experience for this old video.
    Not everyone "pays to play soccer" like the comments suggest. Some of us actually get to go to top level colleges and get degrees while playing the game we love thanks to soccer due to scholarship. And not to mention the chance to get picked up by a pro team. For those who do not get scholarships, financial aid and grants are widely available if your household income is low enough. Look up FAFSA if finances are an issue for college.
    As far as "poor American style soccer" I'd like to point out that this video features a college team on the East Coast. East Coast is notorious for recruiting the biggest guys possible and playing an eyesore style of soccer which is relying on long balls and set pieces for goals. Here in the West Coast, we like to play much more technical with the ball on the ground influenced by European soccer. Historically when our styles of play meet, West Coast tends to dominate the game in possession and chances created, but games can be thrown very easily by giving up corner kicks and set pieces. East Coast style is ugly, but they defend well and find a way to win. I'd say the two sides are about equal in wins against each other. Keep in mind that every team is different and you don't really know college soccer just by watching this video.
    "They think they're so good and cool". Aside from going pro or national team, this is the highest level of soccer available in America. Of course there's a level of pride that comes with making it into college soccer. We realize that we are definitely not the best in the world and that European soccer generally is better, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't wear our college jersey with our heads high the same way and club team or even Sunday league team does.
    "American college soccer players suck" is true to an extent if you want to compare then to professionals. Many players are in their programs due to relationships with the coaches, they were great players when they were younger but never improved, or just fit a certain criteria that a coach is looking for when recruiting. However, its not correct to say that all the players are bad. An extremely small amount of players make it to college soccer vs how many people play in their youth and so that says something no matter the reason why you got recruited. Many players in the college scene are very talented and could go pro given the opportunity. The injury rate in college soccer is very high and many careers of great players come to an early end and great talent can be wasted in a single moment on the field. My team went from a vicious starting 11 to only having 4 of the original starters thanks to injuries last year. You also have to remember that we are student-athletes. In Europe all you do is play soccer if you are a soccer player. That's it. In college you have to go to multiple classes a day and do well in those classes so you don't fall below the minimum GPA requirement and get cut from the team, before you even get out to training. It can be draining for those who aren't mentally tough and can negatively impact your game even if you are a great player. Its a whole different lifestyle then professional/European soccer and many great footballers can't balance school along with soccer. The temptation of the amazing party scene is a whole extra demon if not enjoyed in moderation.
    If anyone has any questions about D1 soccer I'd be glad to answer.

    I've been playing in the US, and played in Germany for a long time and will be playing in college next fall. Having seen players on both sides of the pond, D1 soccer players are great players on par with anyone I payed against in Europe. Anyone who is bashing college soccer doesn't understand the importance of college sports in American culture; in any sport here in America, instead of academies, there are youth clubs and school teams up until age 18, and then 5% of those players move on to college soccer, and a lucky few of those play pro. Although there are some academies starting up in the European mold through the USSDA Demosphere, most players, like all American athletes, still play in college, as it is culturally significant in the US to attain a degree, and for college to be a chapter in your life.

      9:30 isn't too bad, but it's still an early class for college. College classes are often spread throughout the day, so it's not like the 7am-3pm or whatever for gradeschool and high school. Some days you don't even start class until the afternoon. Which is why having to go to a 9am class can seem early.

    To those that are comparing college soccer to professional in Europe is simply unfair. These players are amateurs, with very few of them with a shot to go pro, and if they do go pro it will most likely be in the MLS. With that being said both the teams playing in this video are top 25 programs in the USA. In fact Charlotte (Green Team) made it to the Championship this year. If you have ever watched a college soccer game in America you will realize that it is much more direct, and much less possession oriented. It is also very physical. It isn't as beautiful as it is overseas but is much more action packed in my opinion. Also college sports in America are very popular. Much more emphasis on college sports than academies and what not in Europe. Plus soccer is the 4th most popular sport in America. With all this being said Division 1 soccer is the highest level of soccer in America, outside of the MLS.

    @Brain2Big 11 років тому

    yes of course but my point is another one. If there was the opportunity to study and play football at a good level. If you wan't to play for a european Youth team good isn't enough... and then, once you are in the Youth squad no one guareantees you to turn pro. You don't play football and study in europe... you have to choose one! And then obviously a decent baseball player in the us would be considered good in europe and the same with football in the usa

  • @BBj0121
    @BBj0121 11 років тому

    If you knew much about sport you would know that rugby tackles are a lot more safer than American football. Rugby tackles are below theshoulder and there is a proper technique which is both efficient and safe. However, in American football, tackles are much more powerful and harder. Even with the padding, players still come out of tackles with serious injuries. Also, 'Real Men' play every sport, you shouldn't discriminate less contact sports because they still require a high level of skill.

  • @Coptah
    @Coptah 11 років тому

    I like how you say football (american football) when its only in the US.
    Its like whatever is popular in the US, means it must be just as popular across the world. Take off the red n white glasses and realise the best sport isn't just football (soccer) because you can play it easily, it's because its exciting, has multiple level's and brings the most money in. I'm sure people don't watch it because they know they can go a play the same sport in the park. World Cup finals get the most views.

  • @Coptah
    @Coptah 11 років тому

    You've clearly been living under a rock for the past 50 years, Who are the most well known sportsmen...Oh yeah Footballer's (soccer players). The US loves everything else, but the world loves football. Just because some of your friends get blown away by a few matches of lacrosse it is you watch, it doesn't change the fact that more people watch the sport for more entertainment. you're basically just spouting your opinion like its a fact. Most money is in soccer because its simply the best. Fact.

  • @broLAXgoalie12
    @broLAXgoalie12 11 років тому

    No it most certainly is not. Hockey, lacrosse, basketball, football, formula1 are all much more entertaining than soccer. Soccer is the largest sports market in the world because it is the most readily accessible. I have several friends from England who attend university here with me in the states who come out to my lacrosse games who are just blown away by how much more fun the game is. I would even venture to say the reason you have more fun watching is you are drunk when you are watching.

    College soccer is a joke. And is one of the reason why the US development system is crap compared to...every where else. most 18 to 20 year old top players in Europe and South America are playing from Sept through May and have to promote themselves through the business side of the game as well as get notices on the field. How long are the seasons for college players? lol...what a joke.

    I wasn't the best but i was pretty good. I played A league for 2 years, B league for 1, and Travel for 1 (if your from america you would know what that is.). i played midfield and striker. I mainly concentrated on footwork because i hated people who just ran with the ball cause of their speed. I know what im talking about haha. And yes, i agree you do need a lot of endurance and balance, and i'm aware you don't need as much endurance in football as u do soccer.

    Hi i'm 19 and italian. I wish to know more about the "level" of football in collage if you get what i mean. Like i've watched quite a few videos, i know is stupid to tell just from a screen and that i should be there to judge but i would compare the level expressed as the one in amateur League here in italy . So my question is a european kid with a good football background would easily compete in these leagues? I Personally think so because any u19 squad of a pro team would destroy team 20-0....

    Soccer is really a tough sport. You don't really see the body fighting in the television. Soccer is really full contact. They push you and elbow you. Also, if you don't dodge a slide tackle fast you are going to break something.

    So you pay NSR Australia for them to contact US colleges promoting you? How much does this cost? When you do get an offer is it likely to be a "top" soccer college or one of the not so good ones? I assume you get a full scholarship with everything paid for (food, accomodation, etc.)? Also where do you trial with NSR and what level do you have to be at? I have played at Nationals football many times with the ACT but never made the Australia squad...

    I went on trials with NSR australia after receiving an e-mail from them. If they like how you play and your grades at school are good they advertise you as a player and student for U.S colleges to pick you... They have a 100% recruitment rate but its not cheap either. And obviously you have to take the SAT. But I should be getting an offer soon and flying to America next year, its great
