"Don't spend time bashing things you don't like and focus on what inspires you" - that's powerful advice for any area of life. This is the vibe I want to bring to my music whether it's songs I write or songs I choose to cover.
Would love to hear you guys get laser specific with your tips or even break down songs in this 8-12 minute format. It could be really cool if you guys gave genre-specific tips as well.
You guys are so great with your advice. Very good stuff, makes you know where we are and need to be. Thank you. Still trying here and taking your advice.
I've heard you guys say this before but this time it reminded me of something my ex said to me. You guys said something like "You'll never be... whoever you're comparing yourself to... so focus on being you and using your voice " etc. Well, a good while ago I was reading something out loud to my now ex-wife that was very similar, and before I could finish the phrase she jumped in with, "So why bother then?" Wow! That was a huge off-ramp sign for our relationship. Thanks for sharing your decades of experience with us. It always inspires me to keep on my path; wherever it may lead.
I am really enjoying these videos, You two seem like a couple of really good dudes. I think my songs are "pretty good" but I would really like to get more serious in 2025 and finish a few that need a 2nd verse & work hard on my songwriting. I do have a UA-cam channel with a few old 4track demos of songs I wrote tears agon, nothing to write home about
Loved this! Still haven’t committed to a Songtown membership and it has nothing to do with money. I write for my students here in Nashville and I’ve written for myself for 30 years. Every time I listen to a podcast or video I think, “Dang! That’s such good advice!” You guys both have such a humble demeanor and give the best advice. Keep it up!
How familiar are you guys with the songwriters of British bands from the 80's ? Here's some examples of one's that I enjoy. XTC , The Blue Nile, Squeeze, Gram Parker, Elvis Costello, The Clash, Kate Bush, The English Beat, Thomas Dolby, Nick Lowe...... What the above list has in common is that musically and lyrically they're all top notch with original sound all their own.
@@SongTownUSA The Album 'Hats' by the Blue Nile is my recommendation artists like Rickie Lee Jones Phil Collins Joni Mitchell were fans of this Scottish band. Of all the ones I've listed these guys have a vibe that is truly unique. I love the song headlights on the parade from the hats album.
You guys are awesome, and it’s a blessing to learn from you, but I feel the 10 minutes would’ve been better spent using brevity, and covering more topics regarding the years of songwriting experience. I know my opinion doesn’t matter much to you guys, but that’s just my two cents. This would’ve been a much more powerful video,if more topics were covered with less dialogue and time spent on each topic. Maybe do a 10 minute rapid fire type of video for those of us in desperate need of as much of what you have to offer 🙏🏽

Cool, what genres are you in to?
My favorite part will always be laying down the bass line. It always makes a song that sounds sorta plain into something anchored and groovy.
Ok this is a great one.
Wow I’m glad I stumbled upon this channel. Really solid information, better than some other songwriting channels I’ve seen

Another great vid, guys! Out of curiosity, have you two ever co-written a charted song together?
Only once on a Bluegrass song called Bohemian. Thanks for asking! ~CM
