Would it be possible to see a video of your mixing process? I mean, if you could let us see how you treat all the tracks in your DAW with both plugins and analog gear? That would be extremely helpful and valuable. Cheers!
Gregory has a great series that’s super inexpensive called “Riding the Mix Buss,” where he does a deep dive into a mix. Pretty damn cool. My mix style is way different but I love Gregory’s taste and his shit sounds tiiiiiight. I’ve regularly gone back and checked that series out. I had a section of a song that needed some really 70s sounding drums, and those techniques came in handy. I’d love to record a band that takes some influence from the 70s, whether it be something dreamy like this, or even a retro prog band, but most of my clients are punk and metal musicians or modern prog, so it’s unlikely any time soon.
I absolutely love this. The silky vocals. Everything is so clear. The drums have that perfect mid range knock to it. The open hat to the left is so buttery and soft. The electric piano is so nice.
I LOVE that you use just a single hit on the ride cymbal, and you let it ring, sustain, and die away. Rarely do you get to hear just 1 amazing ping on the ride like that! Also great dynamic range. I see my output meters using their full swing!... ie. no volume reduction by UA-cam. Kudos for that.
@@TheHouseofKushTV That, & the perfection of the cymbal sizzle in the mix from ~ 3:56-4:47, the end (punctuated by a single distinct & decaying ride hit) of which serves to pull the listener in close like a warm audio hug. Thank you, Mix Jesus :)
As a fan of Royksopp but also of trip hop, I appreciate quiet songs. You master the down tempo, the groove drum part as much as we could expect with you. It reminds me of our French band AIR too...
Yeah, it is like AIR. Gregory, the production, your mix of this, is fuckn beautiful, and the way you and Sarah's voices segue into one another is angelic.
This is the first actual piece i hear from you. And i can say this sound is fitting your personality very well. So chill and clear defined. Im really loving it. And that sweet analog flavor of the production is like the cherry on the top that rounds the image. Great work. Looking forward hearing more from you!
YES!!! i've been waiting for this tune since the drum compression video! i watch that video over and over just cause the drums groove so hard. u r that cat! thanks for all of this.
i'm curious, how much of that snare tone is the snare itself and how much is the production? that buzzy/gritty/pffft snare sound is something i've always chased, and i used to jump thru hoops going after it with tape and compression, but now i have a snare that just sounds like that at the mic and it's a lot easier :) just curious how you got there.
@@zs5948 in one of his videos he shows how he mics his drum and he uses a side mic in the snare bottom to get that crunchy snare tone. Hope my recall is acurate. Look up for that video, is great. Cheers!
It took me almost the whole clip's duration to realize the footage was actually from Solaris. Then, recalling the book and the movie, the lyrics of the song all of a sudden started making way more sense :)
What a cool emotional ride that song is. I can tell you poured your heart into it. You and your wife are insanely talented people. I’ll be looking out for that vinyl
I like how warm the bass & drums are. Love the old school vibe & the many little melodic percs that progress the song making it worth sitting through til the end. Def interested in hearing the whole LP. As a corrective critique, Id say i wish the vocals sounded a bit more analog & maybe the hats too cuz this has a good retro analog vibe in the composition but something about the brighter elements sound too clean in a digital way(as in not retro sounding). This style song seems like some dirty subtle tape hiss & more lofi compressed crunch on the hats would make it sound more together but thats just my taste as someone whos been listening to a hell of a lot of retro music after the Beatles Get Back documentary dropped lol. My ears might not be accurate. Glad you shared it & Im impressed. Great driving music.
Love to see how you got vocals wide & present. Also how you placed the flute perfectly. Dude dry saturated drums and wide vocals r my holy grail. Pls deep dive scuba Steve.
We all trippin' now, baby! I think it's wonderful what you two have between each other. It totally drives your art. You are such sculptor of sound - as each sound itself has has its own form to be discovered, positioned, and then polished. Thanks so much for all of it, and the journey on so many levels. Neal
Hey, I just want to say keep doing what you're doing. Seems like you're one of the VERY few people who don't just repeat what everybody else is saying like a broken record. The information on your channel is gold. One of the few times I dont just think "yes, sounds good", I really want my music to sound like this in terms of mixing quality.
The snare is illegally fat and smooth at the same time, just like everything else in the mix!! The production and mix is amazing. Good job! I might say it reflects your smooth personality :D
It's so encouraging to see a great engineer who is also a great artist. That's a rare thing. Alan Parsons comes to mind. This song was beautiful and transported me to a good place.Thank you.
Mad respect for your music and production style. You’ve also upped my mixing game tenfold since I started watching your channel! You’re hooking up that secret sauce that most mixers won’t share.Thank you!
Man, I really dig this a lot! I've been subbed to you for awhile, and the plugins, and Sneaky Little Devil. Awesome! I've learned a lot from you over this last year, Scott. Thanks!
I love this. I’ve seen another comment about wanting the production to be even more lofi/vintage and I very much disagree: the mixing sounds like vintage inspired sounds through a modern lens and I LOVE that. Everything is warm and pillowy but also clearly defined. I always felt that way about Darkside of the Moon. It’s so warm sounding but also everything is cleanly delineated and “hifi” at the same time. Tough balance and I feel like you nailed it. At any rate, thoroughly enjoyed listening!
Gregory...dude that's such a lovely track, melodic and shimmering with vibe. I'm old enough to remember when such a track would be played often on the radio...where it belongs. Awesome 😊
So so good. First time hearing the full song obviously, but I recognize “parts” in almost every section and now I’m on mission to go through older eps that highlighted those little nuances, cuz I remember them well! Thanks for all you do here and for the tools you create for us, Gregory! 🙏🏻
Absolutely adore your work, Greg. Picked up Blyss the other week and it's such a fantastic piece of software. Been a huge fan of SLD since I discovered your channel.
Beautiful mix - you are doing an amazing job there and here with your channel, Gregory. And you have great presence. I would love to hear more Monoplectronic - those few tracks in your plugin promo videos (like Omega Twk etc.) are so awesome, groovy and rich in retro sci-fi vibe, it's a shame there's no more music from this project available. Monoplectronic is just superb.
Very cool. I've always enjoyed learning from your videos and your vibey/feel approach but did begin to wonder what your mixes sound like. Now I know and I'm not disappointed. The music and production is really cool too. Not super obvious. I like it!
That is really and truly amazing, everything about it. So many tones sneak up on you, and that bass drives it. The percussion and synth tracks as well, definitely a keeper. Welcome to the playlist, and thank you for lessons.
Love your music! So groovy and chill at the same time. I love the atmosphere you create with your mix. This little distortion on the drums... Great job! Obviously I'd love to see your mix breakdown!!
Is it possible to discuss getting that very close sound? I've tried using reverb with very 'small' settings but either the sound is 'dead' or borderline metallic when I play around with very short delay.
Whaaat that is so good!! I’ve always wondered what your mixes must sound like after all that advice, and the sound of this song is EXACTLY what I would have imagined from you. Immediately subscribing to Sneaky Little Devil, and adding on Spotify. Fantastic job!
Love it! I closed my eyes and everything and every instrument was a special place in the mix, is like every sound makes scenes and stimulate you in some way. So good
As someone just getting into record/mixing seriously (from my bedroom lol) and considering programming plugins, your channel is a goldmine! Also your music is cool.
I've been a fan of your afterhours for quite some time, but now I finally hear the music you're producing! And I like it very much! Great, organic, retro drum sound, lots of space, great vocal work, just really nice!
Amazing Vibe!!! The vocals, WOW! So clear and absolutely encapsulating. Would love to see a deep dive, especially on your vocal and drum sounds. Great song and great production all around. Thanks for the Vibes!

I love it Gregory. It’s a song that is going to play in my brain for a long time. It is super catchy and it sounds amazing. I also remember part of it from your compression video I think. Beautiful work!
I love your ethos, man, and this track as well as the others are testament to what you teach. As a bass player I gravitate towards the superb lines and groove in this song, and the way it sits in the pocket with your drums. I tip my hat. Peace.
This song really grew on me and I ended up listening to it a couple times a day for about a week. Nice work. The sitar part at the end of the first bridge is probably one of the sickest things I’ve ever heard. Really dig the bubbly sounding patch used for the arpeggio at the end too
This sounds amazing. Everything is perfect. Would love to see some tricks you used to get this so defined. Excellent production and mixing. Great work man!
