He was a much more precise and technical singer, whereas Dean always sounded like he was smiling his way through the song and really enjoying himself. It's almost like you can hear his warm chuckle and see that wonderful twinkle in his eyes as you listen to him sing!
How deaf is deaf ... (moreover, Sinatra's voice "sounded" - I'd say: became - lower in his later years, not in his earlier: just pick some Dorsey or Ink Spots recording, and then some tune from his Duets albums, to compare). Maybe you're mixing up "low" with soft: Sinatra mostly sounded softer in his earlier years (later, he did so less generally and more selectively for emotional expression).
