- Principal Tuba Gene Pokorny talks about what makes this Vaughan Williams tuba concerto unique and special to him. Part of the Beethoven 7 May 15-17 series of concerts.
I played it on a BBb Tuba over 24 years ago. That piece made me a more focused player. Made me pay attention to hitting every note correctly but not make the musicality (flow) suffer. I always enjoyed playing this piece. Wonderful memories. I hope a recording of your performance Mr. Pokorny Wil become available so I can listen and enjoy reliving those great memories of my younger days.
I feel so lucky to have see this concert, love you Gene!
Harvey always performed this piece on his CC Conn, always sounded great.
All credit for playing this work on a larger instrument.
I'm sure the audience nor RVW will/ would mind.
The middle movement is rather special. Not just from a tuba repertoire perspective, but from an orchestral repertoire perspective. As the tuba sails higher and higher the music becomes more pastorale and flowing. Just love it.
Have enjoyed playing excellent tuba parts in RVW symphonies and choral works - he knows how to write for the tuba.
I would also recommend listening to his "Variations for brass band" which is iconic and 100% brass.
Any chance on a recording??
He’s the very best
I’m attempting this on a BBb tuba. Is there any way to lower the chance of error and cracks in the notes? Perhaps a change in mouthpiece (Currently using a Robert Tucci RT-50)? Or literally anything?
An RT-50 is a pretty big mouthpiece. You may use something closer to a true Eb/F mouthpiece for the VW. I would contact Bob Tucci directly and see what model he recommends for the VW on your BBb.
