We meet Josh Tulberg, an industrial designer who fabricated a mini boat of his own design, using his workshop laser cutter and 3D printer. Josh shows us how his boat kit is put together using zip ties and epoxy, and we take his boat on the water to test its seaworthiness. And it surpassed all of our expectations!

Guys built very small one man boats for fishing when I was young a little smaller than this. Maybe slightly longer and not as wide. No buoyancy except the wood itself. We used about an 8 in spring stretched against the wooden inside of the boat on the right of the person, with a metal lever mounted to slide back and forth against the spring. Wired from the battery so the spring acted as a rheostat. You could slide the metal arm back and forth against the spring and change the speed of the electric trolling motor. A simple switch setup could change to reverse. The variable speed was handy so you could adjust it to troll against the current along the edge of the river and ease along or stay in one spot against the slight current. The water was always within about two or three inches of the top sides of the boat. A built in wooden box would be between your legs as a fish well, hinged lid and all. A few small holes in the bottom of the well.

Garret Hynes that would be easy to do man, and he sells the boat without a motor so it would be simple to put a steam engine in.. I would have an issue with having a hot boiler that close to my proximity though, I would rather have a Stirling engine or something pushing it using the heat difference between the water and the air

I'd like to see one designed for fishing, not too different, just some allowances for a small tackle box amd fishing rod holders. Also, maybe an outrigger to help further prevent capsizing if you hook a larger fish

That is a really cool way of building a boat. I might have to do one in RC scale at some point.
My model club has large battleship models about 11 feet long that you lie in. Other than being reclined and having a fibreglass hull they work exactly the same way. Would be interesting to see if you could sail something like this up a canal with a tent stowed aboard.

I have one question. Can you add more power? I understand hill speed, that’s what’s called the limit of speed a certain hill can achieve, no matter how much power you have. But I would suggest you take that manufacturer technique, to build a more streamlined hull, with the idea of being able to cut through the water, until you can raise up on a plane, that lowered the waters drag on the hill.

$1.5k - $2k ($1k for his kit + $500/$1000 for extras) for a complete boat sounds good but on eBay you can buy a 2nd hand actual boat for the same and even less. Its a great piece of kit but a tad pricey for a gimmick. They look super fun though.

Yeah exactly. I don't think anyone commenting here has ever owned a real boat that is much bigger/faster and costs far less than this toy boat. on even a small to medium sized lake you'll learn real quick why most boats go faster than a crawling pace.
there's also no room for an oar , which every smart boater knows you need.

Chesapeake Light Craft...I would be shocked if they weren't the direct source of his inspiration especially looking at the puzzle piece joints. Stitch and glue boat building has been around for decades, as a stand alone technique i think it was popularized by the late Phil Bolger decades ago. Currently there are thousands of designs based on this method, but i don't think any of them ship as kits in a parcel that size. CNC is the norm, laser cutting seems to me to be an unnecessary complication to production.
Also, you may not have them on the west coast, but people have been racing "cocktail class" boats since the 1940s, i think they are about 8' long and carry much more motor.

Please can you make a video showing how to turn wood into liquid fuel for a vehicle? It involves using a gasifier and its condensate, wood tar. You heat the wood tar and condense the vapours that come off it, this condensate works as liquid fuel for engines. A youtuber called mrteslonian has made a lot of videos about it but they are tedious and hard to follow.
