I used to go into WHSmith on a Saturday when I was a kid and spend hours messing about in the ZX81's. I dreamt of owning one. Had a Dragon 32 when I was older which blew my mind until I saw the games on my mates Spectrum. Good days 😎
When our neighbours (Toni & Tracy) both got a Speccy I was green with envy. Here was my ZX81 that was kicking out crap B&W blocks and they had ace graphics, sound and everything!
Now these days there are some truly amazing ZX81 programmers around that I only wish existed back in the day. They would have given the Speccy programmers a real run for their money.
0:32 01. 2013 Stair Runner
1:07 02. 1984 *Manic Miner*
1:42 03. 1982 *Space Invaders*
2:11 04. *20??* Shapestack (1K Games Pack #1)
2:46 05. 1982 *3D Monster Maze*
3:20 06. 2013 Ant Attack
4:04 07. 2013 Car Race
4:41 08. 2013 Jim Bagleys ZX81 Racing
5:25 09. 1982 Mazogs
6:03 10. 2016 Against the Elements
Me, as a homebrew programmer, I am constantly looking for sources and ideas, so I love to watch videos like these! Thank you for the great video ;)
Thanks for the kind words here and hopefully you've got some great ideas.
Absolutely stunning games for Zx81. Gonna try for sure on my still working ZX81. Thanks.
They're fantastic aren't they. There's still a brilliant amount games coming out every month too.
@@Villordsutch Yes! Glad I stumbled in your vid! Just spent afternoon playing 3D Maze Monster. It's really real fun, and now let's go with some of the others👍😊
If you've got a PC at hand I'd really recommend this 3D Monster Maze remake - ua-cam.com/video/RJuOE9yostE/v-deo.html
Also can I say look for ZX81 Chroma. That is very clever.
I don't know why but I'm so obsessed with the Car Race game.
Because it's ace! 😃
I think it is amazing that a system so limited was able to run games.
Yep. I honestly don't think the original creators of the ZX81 would have believed what the programmers would produce from their machine.
Lovely compilation. hope there are plenty more new and old Zx81 games coming up. ..
Am I the only one who went "NOOOooooo" at 2:44 when he dropped the Tetris L???? :-( Great vid!!! I have to do the internal RAM upgrade and try some of these out!!!
I recently got the internal ram upgrade and it's a clever little thing.
fantastic selection of games there Vil i love em all and have played them too and can highly recommend them .....Kim.....
Thanks Kim 👍
Hello, yes you forgot one great game which kept my brothers up all night trying to get the highest score, "Combat Flight by G Manuel 1982". Built my ZX81 from Kit as part of a college project. Had a Comodore Pet 8K in college that could take 3 commands per line. ZX only 1 but learned to write economic code as a result. Game runs well on EightyOne emulator but I still have the tape, though I mostly use the emulator. Got a Memotec Keyboard and Memotec 32K Ram Pack back in the day for the ZX81 along with the ZX printer. All still work.
I don't think I've played that one. I'll have to look into it for the coming future.
Modern games are very hard to play in the beginning. You have to learn first how everything works. This takes time. Only later do you get good enough to start enjoying yourself. I think the big appeal of these ZX81 games is that you can start having fun right away.
Here's the keys, this is the paragraph (of two) of a story. Now go! Welcome to the world of ZX81 gaming.
Back in the day I was lucky enough to get one of the earliest Speccies (my first computer hardware update was the 32k RAM stick) and the '81 was always veiwed as "it's not worth having", but this lot proves that was FAR from the truth. Thanks for these, I'd forgotten all about Mazogs (playing Maziacs mostly)
Thanks for dropping a comment here. You're right, I started with a ZX81 (I still have it) but back in the day, once my neighbours got a ZX Spectrum my heart was broken. There's could do so much, whilst -at the time - mine couldn't. These days, plus a few back then, the machine is singing. If you get chance have a search for Paul Farrow, Dr Beep, Sir Morris or Buster (to name but a few) here on UA-cam. I have a few in my Playlists, but directing you to just my channel is a bit cheeky. Also checkout ZX81 Chroma, that will show you a brand new amazing side of the little machine that can.
@@VillordsutchThat all sounds great, another retro machine to have and play on and I'll have a look at those channels too ; )
3D monster maze was the first game I remember playing when I got a ZX-81, but then got more into 3D defender ( both by J.K. Greye) . I now have both of these on original tapes and can't wait to try them again.
I keep getting out bid on Monster Maze.
I die a little each time when it happens :(
If it helps I always set a £10 limit and walk away. One day I'll win it...One day :D
Once I've got my other 81 up and running and have played the game would be happy to donate it to you for free. But might be a while, you bastards keep me watching these vids rather than getting stuff sorted :)
Ha! Thank you...I've got titles to so you've got a lot of watching to sit through.
Forty niner and jetman I think it was called. Think they were the first high res graphics on the old zx81.
Rocket Man is what you're thinking of and it's still amazing today.
Here's me attempting to play it - ua-cam.com/video/3rdOzU9jw_c/v-deo.html
Just seen your work for the ZX81 and I am pleased to be part of it. Try my game 'Alien Mind', its a brain game, one of my best!
Do you have a link to it Andre, so I can download it?
Yes there are 2 web sites hosting most of my programs.
one in Germany zx81.de/andre
one in France zx81.ordi5.fr/andre
Yes all my programs are completly and only created with the BASIC language even though the details like the blinking of the small eyes in YOOGOR seen to be otherwise and the speed of the animation is faster then the avarage ZX81 BASIC programs.
Thank you for your great work to promote the ZX81, André Baune
Thanks André.
I've downloaded it.
All being well and I don't make a total arse of myself (though that's never stopped me before) I'll see if I can get it out for Sunday evening.
Andre, just to let you know Alien Mind is now on the front screen.
My first computer a ZX81. £49.95 in 1981. Came as a PCB, a bag of components, a case, a PSU and a membrane keypad. Soldering iron not included.
I would have been terrified if my ZX81 turned up in bits, though my dad would have probably loved it. I remember well attempting to understand why he found his Everyday Electronics magazines so fascinating.
cool. my first machine was a zx81
It still splendid today. :D
'One Little Ghost' from Cronosoft is good.
It really is. Clever too.
amazing!!! want seem more!!
I've got over 250 ZX81 games played on my channel. Happy watching 😀😀
Pretty sure that 3D Monster Maze eventually got a port to the Speccy.
I remember playing Gulp2 and Football Manager for hours
Was Gulp 2 a Pac-Man clone as it rings a bell.
yes Pac-Man
Boy, did I have the wrong games for my ZX81 back in the day...
I played a game on my ZX81 called Squeeze, but never seen it on a video since
What happened in Squeeze I'll see if I can find it?
The Last One... How it is possible on ZX81???
If I hadn't seen it with my own eyes I'd be screaming witchcraft :D
It's using the 16kb ram expansion module
Mazogs is the only game I ever bought.
It is a classic
"panic", The Best game to tk85 I seem
Clive would have been chuffed. :)
He really would have. I don't think any of the team would have expected their little 1K machine to continue, to deliver so much.
need to mention if they are they 1k or 16k ;) could never afford the memory expansion in those days ;)
+beingatliberty good point. :D The most expensive memory ever! My ZX81 reviews - I did on my channel - stipulated what memory they were, rookie mistake on leaving them out on this video.
The blu tack required back in the day is more expensive now lol.
tell me more about the DK tronics character set space invaders. Was that a hardware add on?
A good place to find more knowledge would be the ZX Resource Centre here - www.fruitcake.plus.com/index.html
Mr. Farrow is both a wizard and a fount of all knowledge
It came as a 4k rom add on. My mate Mezza had one... envy of the neighbourhood back in 82 - even Speccy abusers doffed their caps when he passed... 🙂
MAZZ-OGS, Lord Sutch, I tell thee, I tell thee, it was always MAZZ-OGS over in the kingdom of Ull, East Yorks 🙂 Please practise and chant thrice nightly... not Maze-ogs but MAZZ-OGS!! Other than that, a tip top Zed Ex video of the highest calibre, my lord. Please proceed and continue to entertain the monochrome masses (of Mazz-ogs)
I'm positive us Red Rose'ers have to call it "Maze-ogs" by law. 😉
@@Villordsutch Reet - there's only one thing for it, my Lord... I was hoping it wouldn't come to this... ua-cam.com/video/-YIl9dPCxXQ/v-deo.html
3d defender is pretty good.
I was trying it again the other day but I just couldn't master the controls.
+Villordsutch the controls are fiddly but the graphics are pretty good.
Does it require a ram pack?
All except the 1k game 👍
What was the sound on car race game?
I've honestly no idea!?
My setup was so different then it could have been anything.
Does sound bizarre though...
the ZX-80 does not have sound, except when you add the programmable sound adapter (PSG) extension the ZON-X80, which added the AY-3-8912 PSG chip, but there were only a few games that supported it.
Some of these look impossible for 64x48 resolution
Yes, using only the built-in BASIC language. However, programming in assembly code (we, incorrectly, used to call it "machine code", back then) you could access the a video memory directly. Most Hi-res games used this and the loaded program, as viewed on-screen, was just a few lines of BASIC that kicked off the main assembly code routine. The day you first discovered that your BASIC ZX81 was just a high-level layer on top of a more fundamental, ridiculously quick raw programming language was like taking the Red Pill in the Matrix.
@@johnbishop6045 I knew about 'machine code' back in 1989 but I was only 8 years old, so I sticked to simple basic codes :)
