We used loosen the slip clutch every year before first use and just give it a quick spin. Sometimes the plate stick and will not slip when needed.

I get the sense, you might be pulling hay off about the same size area I am. I have about 2 1/2 acres right now and started last fall putting up loose hay. I have an 8n and an NAA, a JD #5 sickle mower, a Massey Harris #11 rake & a pitchfork. This is to offset feed costs for our goats, so the whole idea is to do it as cheaply as possible. I can buy a lot of hay for the cost of newer equipment. I think the mower, which was a basket case, I have about $125 in. Rake was $250, but I had it delivered which was no small thing. I currently pick it up with a pitchfork and put up loose. As you can imagine, I am not too excited about it. I see cheap square balers, but I am paranoid about the knotters. I can sense one in my future, however, if I find one I am comfortable with.

Other than the tractor, we have $1800 in all of our hay equipment. That being said, our equipment has needed lots of maintenence and repairs. When we went looking for a baler, we found one that we could see operate before buying so we knew the knotters worked. Probably paid a little more for it, but sometimes that's the trade off. By the way, we're baling about 4 acres.
