India has to avoid riding many tigers at the same time. It is an extremely dangerous and volatile area. You can be a friend and an enemy at the same time in this region. If we are close to Israel, it is hard to have good relations with Syria, since they are mortal enemies. Same with Iran. Israel sees Iran as its main adversary in the region and so does Saudi Arabia. India has to be tread carefully. It is like walking in a booby trapped area! Will be interesting how our foreign policy in this region evolves. We have generally done a good job at balancing the needs of the various power brokers. Good interview! Arnab...please take a cue...

I feel for him. He is a doctor, liberal secular person who loves Syrian people. He had been framed several times by several agencies, Western powers, deep states as a killer who murders children with chemical weapons. He can never kill children, he is a doctor. There has been absolutely no evidence of his involvement. He has been framed so many times. And by doing that, ISIS, Syrian rebels, USA, Western powers, Iran, Saudi, Qatar involve themselves in Syria and destroy Syria with civil war.
He is actually a very popular leader, Syrians like him, that's why he wins elections every time. He is tolerant and pluralistic leader, who can accomodate Syrian plural demographics with Kurds, Shias, Christians, Sunnis, Yazidis very well. That's why west, Saudi and Arab world are so jealous of him.
And regarding authoritarianism, which country doesn't have authoritarianism. Look at Hungary, Turkey, Belarus, Russia( Putin), even UAE and Saudi are also oligarchial authoritarianist states. Why cherry picking Al Assad and Syria.
