I quickly found out much of my fishing success was due to the wise angler with me. Your videos helped equip me not only with knowledge of bass behavior but also technique selection and locating bass.
Hi, Jay. Sorry to hear about your dad's passing. My dad is turning 91 next week and now lives with us. And it is very interesting - i would have thought that stunted fish were a result of lack of food - but you show there is an abundance of food, so is this the result of a tight small gene pool? We ran into this in the high arctic in land locked lakes, the trout were very strange with giant heads and small bodies, locked in lakes for ......XXXXXXX years. What are your thoughts?
The stunted fish are indeed due to lack of appropriate food. I didn't flesh that out well, actually removed that explanation from the VFJ to keep the talking head parts of my video in check. Depending on a few factors, bluegills can outgrow bass, getting too big for small bass to eat. Small bass are relegate to competing for insect food with hordes of mid-size sunfishes. However, all those mid-sized sunfish can feed large bass. So far, the population of larger bass in the pond is small. I could be wrong, and have yet to find them. But... I feel should have caught more of them during the spring binge if they were there. Hope I'm wrong. The mountain lakes you describe also tend to be very infertile, producing little food, and have such short growing seasons that trout in many of them become stunted. It's possible that some waters can select for small fish "genetically" but this is often bc of a lack of food and in mountain lakes, heat. Many if not most high mountain lakes rely on stocking, from airplanes, though as they cannot support successful reproduction. Hope this helps. Paul

Much Appreciate this latest video Paul! Thank You! 🎉 👍 I live in AZ and see the warm water draw especially winter to spring/summer with the Florida strain Bass stocked in some impoundments. Main Lake Water temp is upper 70’s in my favorite lake. (It’s just getting started…) AZ seems an exception to the upper temp. limit Bass Prefer…… Micropterus Salmoides are one Tough, Beautiful and Fascinating life form! ❤ Them All!
Hi, MS. Cool having M salmoides respond! :)) Yeah, heat plays such aa role in cold blooded lives. Yes, it's "variable" in behavior seen against environment. And LMB, esp, have been described as "thermally labile", meaning they can operate at a wide range of temps. They work with what they've got, and LMB are particularly good at that. Really cool critter, that keeps us fishers guessing, and the fish nerds... having to consider some pretty deep stuff around how it all works.
Hoping so.🤞 I can throw a rock into it from here. Was a bit disappointed in the spring crank and jerk response though. More work to be done. And, a lot of water to explore in the area. Might take a bit of time til I find my way back onto... my throne. (Thinking is Lucas' comment below) :)
Hi, Christopher. Good to see you back too. And thanks. I was an upstate NY'er for a lot of years, so it's pretty familiar. Lots of exploring to do though. Just starting to do that. Cheers, Paul
Wow! So happy to see you posting again! Thermometers...I have 4, at least one is in vehicle at all times.. East side now, eh? Sweet ponds. I can imagine the time you spend learning about the Nature of Fishing on them... Hope all is well. Sure is good to see you.
Hi, Michael! Great to hear from you. Good to be back fishing again. Polarized glasses and thermometers in every car -just in case. :) Suns so high in... April... that the heat begins to spread. Seems gradients can pop up anywhere the topography, wind, habitat, sun aspect allow. Cool game. All's well. Working my way back into what I love. Paul

Wow! Back with a bang! Thanks so much for taking the time to make this video. I find your style incredibly engaging, first bass video I haven’t used “skip” on. 💪💪💪. This new pond is interesting, very similar to a pond close to my house. Also around the same size. Looking forward to any new content but still lots of videos to catch up on.
Thanks, Jonni. LOL, I fully expect a lot of people to skip the dense talking head starts to my vids. Good to hear some can make it through. My wife just retired as an elementary school teacher, and has told me there are kids that just can't sit through a documentary or other non-entertainment based stuff. Then there are those that just eat it up. Curiosity catches bass. But then, so does constant chuck-n-wind! To each their own I say.
Hi Ismael. Good to hear from you. All’s well here. Beginning to get some fishing in. Was planning not to put the time into another VFJ, wanting to work on some feature pieces. But, I’m into something pretty cool here and am really tempted to deck out with cameras again to capture some of it. We’ll see…
Hi, Keith. Thanks. It is beautiful here. The ponds were a major selling point. Lotsa work living in the woods here though. A Colorado mountain meadow didn't need much attention, outside of dodging forest fires.
@@thenatureoffishing7591 Saw a bumper sticker the other day. Losing my mind mind in the forest and finding my soul. Cooks Forest State Park is really popular and for good reason. Beautiful old growth forests and people love floating the river.
Hi, Anthony. Thanks. I’m not back full time. Gotta get some things before I can go at it as I’d like. Glad you found the video. Cool scenario. I’ve followed up on that water and found some more large bass. Hope to cover it for TNF at some point. Gosh I miss being able to do that. A VFJ is the most satisfying end to a good fishing scenario.

Hi, Jeremy. Thanks.
Looks like those ponds are promising!
Great to see you again!!
Thanks, Mark!
Welcome back Paul! Finally!!! 👍👍
Thanks, Zellamo. Yes! Finally is right!
@@thenatureoffishing7591 awesome catch BTW 👏

Hi, N B. Welcome. And thanks!
Paul is back🤙👊 great video, welcome to the northeast
Hi, Christopher. Good to see you back too. And thanks. I was an upstate NY'er for a lot of years, so it's pretty familiar. Lots of exploring to do though. Just starting to do that. Cheers, Paul

Hi OA. I’m ok. Just not getting much fishing in. Looking ahead.
Suns so high in... April... that the heat begins to spread. Seems gradients can pop up anywhere the topography, wind, habitat, sun aspect allow. Cool game.
All's well. Working my way back into what I love.
Paul
Thanks you so mucho to be back, hope everyone doing well,I'm following you from Quebec's, Canada.
Your teaching approach is phenomenal !!

Good to see your ok and back
Thanks, striperhunter.
Welcome back, Paul.
Thanks, Smithii. Good to be back fishing again. I love making the vids too. But, man I'm slow at it. Esp when I'm rusty. :) Keep on keepin on!
Hell Yea Paul is back hope all is well
Hi, EJF. Good to hear from you. All's well here. Thanks! Paul
Love to see a new video!!
Hi, Josh. Thanks! Me too.
please come back, you are needed
Welcome to the East! From Connecticut
Thanks, Trey. I'm from NYS originally so this PA stuff is pretty familiar. Happy to be almost anywhere casting again.
Just saw you posted a new video!!!. Welcome back Paul. I hope all is well and I also hope this is the first of more videos to come.
Hi Ismael. Good to hear from you. All’s well here. Beginning to get some fishing in. Was planning not to put the time into another VFJ, wanting to work on some feature pieces. But, I’m into something pretty cool here and am really tempted to deck out with cameras again to capture some of it. We’ll see…
Welcome back! Hope things are well!
Hi, Chris. Thanks! Good to be back.
Western Pennsylvanian here. Welcome. Hope you enjoy it out here. Looks like you got a nice piece of property to have two private ponds.
Hi, Keith.
Learned so much in each video, appreciate you!
Thanks, Spoonism!
How did this slip by me! Gah!
Welcome back, Paul!
I’m so glad you’re back. I tell everyone I can about your channel. Your dedication and analysis to bass fishing is phenomenal. Keep up the good work!
Hi, IP03. Thanks so much. Glad you can sit through some analysis. Not everyone can. Can't say I blame them either. I am, therefore I fish. :)
Oh, my favourite youtuber! I am so happy you are back - and I found this video on bass opening day in my Ontario Canada fish zone!❤❤❤
Hi, sharilamore. Great to hear. It can take me a while to get a video out lately. But not so far off for S Canada. Cheers, Paul
Thanks! This is useful stuff!
Hi, R B. Good to hear. Cool stuff to see. And capitalize on. Cheers, Paul
@@thenatureoffishing7591 The ever rising question for me is, " What are those bass DOING down there?"
Thanks for helping me understand that.
Work in progress...
